Huawei’s Mate XT tri-fold smartphone passed 2 million reservations in China less than a day after its reservation window opened in September 2024. The milestone showed striking early interest in a premium device, but it did not mean Huawei had sold 2 million phones: the figure came from its online reservation counter, and the company did not disclose how many reservations became paid purchases.
What the 2 million figure counted
The number was displayed through Huawei’s online shopping platform, Vmall. Reservations opened at 12:08 p.m. local time on September 7, 2024; by about 10:50 a.m. the next day, the counter showed more than 2 million. Reuters reported the milestone based on Huawei’s store counter (Reuters via Yahoo Finance).
That is evidence of registrations or reservations, not a verified tally of transactions. Huawei did not publicly establish that each reservation required full payment or a binding commitment to buy, and it did not publish a reservation-to-purchase conversion rate. The figure therefore cannot be treated as confirmed orders, completed sales, revenue, or units manufactured.
How the count changed before launch
The 2 million milestone was an early snapshot, not the final reported total. Reuters reported more than 3 million reservations by September 9, and the South China Morning Post cited approximately 3.04 million. Those reports sometimes called them “pre-orders,” but the underlying figure was associated with Huawei’s reservation system; the terminology does not establish that the reservations were paid orders.

What made the Mate XT unusual
The Mate XT Ultimate Design uses two hinges to fold a three-panel display, which Huawei marketed as a commercially launched tri-fold smartphone. Its screen has three configurations: 6.4 inches when folded, 7.9 inches in a partially opened mode, and 10.2 inches fully open. Huawei lists the fully open resolution as 2232 × 3184. The “tri-fold” label describes the three screen sections; the mechanism has two hinges.
Huawei’s China specifications list 16GB of RAM, storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB, and HarmonyOS 4.2. The battery is rated at 5,600mAh typical capacity and 5,500mAh rated capacity; maximum charging is listed as 66W wired and 50W wireless. Huawei gives the weight as approximately 298 grams, excluding the screen surface layer. These are manufacturer specifications for the Chinese model, not independent test results (Huawei product page; Huawei specifications).

Why the price and timing mattered
The Mate XT launched in China at 19,999 yuan for the base configuration, with higher-capacity versions reported at up to 23,999 yuan. Reuters described the entry price as about $2,800 at the time; that is an approximate conversion of the Chinese price, not a standard U.S. retail price. The premium cost made the reservation count notable, while also limiting how directly it can be compared with demand for conventional flagship phones (Reuters via Inc.).
The unveiling also came amid Apple’s iPhone 16 launch period. Huawei’s large, folding display created a conspicuous contrast with Apple’s conventional slab-style phone and supported Huawei’s effort to reassert itself in China’s premium smartphone market after the Mate 60 and Pura series. That timing helps explain the attention; it does not show that Huawei outsold Apple or won the broader smartphone market. Why reservations did not guarantee sales
Reservations can capture several kinds of interest: intent to buy, curiosity about a new form factor, a wish to secure scarce stock, or interest in resale. The count alone cannot tell how much each contributed, and no precise motivation split was published. Nor can it establish how many customers ultimately paid the high launch price.
Supply further complicates the picture. When sales began on September 20, Reuters reported that the phone was not generally available for walk-in customers, leaving some prospective buyers unable to purchase one in stores. That indicates constrained immediate availability, not by itself a complete sellout or a precise production shortfall (Reuters via Investing.com).

The reservation story was China-specific. The September 2024 count should not be read as worldwide demand, and it says nothing by itself about later availability, software, network compatibility, warranty coverage, or Google-service support in other markets.
What the milestone does—and does not—show
The counter passing 2 million in under a day, followed by reports of more than 3 million before unveiling, shows substantial early attention to Huawei’s unusually ambitious and expensive foldable. It does not establish a sales total, a conversion rate, broad affordability, durable demand for tri-fold phones, or a forecast of global success. The most defensible reading is that Huawei generated an exceptional launch-period reservation response in China; how many reservations translated into purchases was not publicly established.
