Jefferies analysts saw less launch excitement and expected the Mate 70 could fall short of the Mate 60, while a Canalys analyst anticipated slight growth. Huawei, meanwhile, said demand exceeded its prepared supply. Those signals conflicted, and the available reporting does not establish which forecast proved right.
What did analysts mean by “weaker sales”?
Huawei unveiled the Mate 70 series on November 26, 2024, as the successor to the Mate 60. In a December 1, 2024 report, Jefferies analysts said online reviews and commentary showed “much less enthusiasm” than around the Mate 60 launch. They wrote, “We believe Mate 70’s ultimate sales volume could be below that of Mate 60.” That was a forecast about eventual unit volume, not a report that sales had already fallen.
The Jefferies view rested on three concerns: apparent consumer excitement was cooler, the upgrades looked limited, and chip production could constrain how many phones Huawei could supply. The analysts also saw downside risk to their earlier estimate that Huawei would ship 48 million phones in 2024. That 48 million figure was an estimate, not a reported final shipment total.
Why did analysts disagree?
Jefferies focused on enthusiasm and supply risk
Jefferies compared the response with the unusually strong attention around the Mate 60. Its analysts judged that the Mate 70’s improvements appeared less compelling and raised the possibility that production bottlenecks would limit sales. Their warning combined a demand concern with a supply concern; it did not establish how many devices customers ultimately bought.

Canalys expected slight growth
Canalys analyst Toby Zhu offered a more optimistic view in the same Reuters report. He said cooling excitement was natural after the Mate 60 comeback hype and expected Mate 70 sales volume to show slight growth over the Mate 60, partly because flagship production capacity was sufficient. The two forecasts therefore differed on the direction of eventual sales, not simply on whether launch attention had cooled.
What did reservations and supply say about demand?
Huawei consumer business group CEO He Gang told state media that prepared supplies had been insufficient and that reservations exceeded 6.7 million. He described demand as “excessive,” as reported by Reuters on December 5, 2024. Reuters also noted that reservations did not require a deposit. The figure is evidence of interest and a supply-demand mismatch at launch, but it is not equivalent to paid orders, completed purchases, or shipped units.

The supply picture was not settled by those statements. Huawei’s claim of insufficient prepared stock could indicate demand outpaced initial availability, while Jefferies raised prospective chip-production constraints and Canalys expected production capacity to be sufficient. These were different assessments made around launch, not a verified account of supply over the product’s full sales period.
How much did the Mate 70 change?
The chip was one reason analysts questioned whether the new model offered enough of a step forward. Reuters reported on December 11, 2024, that TechInsights’ teardown of the Mate 70 Pro+ found an SMIC-made Kirin 9020 using a 7 nm process. TechInsights described it as “not a dramatic redesign but rather an incremental improvement” over the Kirin 9010 in the Mate 60 Pro.

That finding provides context for the modest-upgrade concern, but it does not measure consumer response or prove a sales outcome. Huawei, by contrast, claimed the latest series delivered 40% better performance than the Mate 60, according to the South China Morning Post on December 1, 2024. That figure is Huawei’s claim, not an independently established benchmark in the cited reporting.
What launch-period numbers are useful—and what do they show?

The figures measure different things: reservations, shipments, an analyst’s quarterly sales estimate, and deliveries across Huawei’s full smartphone range. They cannot be combined into a direct head-to-head sales comparison between Mate 70 and Mate 60.

Did the Mate 70 ultimately sell less than the Mate 60?
The cited reports do not establish comparable final or lifetime sales totals for the two series, so they cannot confirm that Jefferies’ warning came true or that Canalys’ growth expectation did. The warning should be read as a launch-period analyst forecast from December 2024. Huawei’s broader standing—Canalys placed it second among China’s smartphone vendors in Q3 2024, with more than 10 million deliveries for the fourth consecutive quarter—shows recovery in the overall market, but does not answer how many Mate 70 phones buyers ultimately purchased.
