H&R Block can be worth considering if you want a choice between filing taxes yourself and getting professional help. Whether it is worth the price depends on your tax situation, whether you qualify for Free Online, and what you pay after adding state filing or a tax-pro review. Its product pages list several filing channels and different starting prices, so compare the total for the service you actually need rather than relying on a headline price.
How H&R Block works
H&R Block offers four ways to prepare a return: do-it-yourself online filing, desktop software, tax-pro preparation, and Tax Pro Review, which adds a professional review to a return you prepare online. The right fit depends on how much guidance you want and whether you want to prepare the return yourself. H&R Block’s filing-options page outlines the channels; its separate Tax Pro Review page, desktop software page, and tax-office page describe their respective offerings.
Online DIY
You prepare and file your return online. H&R Block lists a free option for qualifying simple returns and paid plans for situations that require more features. This is the natural place to start if you are comfortable entering your own tax information.
Desktop software
Desktop editions are a separate product with their own prices and state-related charges. They should not be confused with the online plans, whose prices are listed on a different page.

H&R Block prices by filing channel
The following are prices displayed on H&R Block product pages as of October 4, 2026. The pages describe different products and do not provide one directly comparable all-in price. Fees and offers can change; check the relevant page and your checkout total, especially for state filing and add-ons.
| Channel or option | Displayed price | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Online DIY | Free Online at $0 for qualifying returns; paid online plans start at $65 for federal returns, according to the filing-options page. | The starting price is federal. Tax Pro Review and state filing may add costs. |
| Free + Tax Pro Review | $75, according to the Tax Pro Review page. | Confirm what state filing costs for your return. |
| Deluxe + Tax Pro Review | $130 plus $49 per state, according to the Tax Pro Review page. | The listed state charge is per state. |
| Premium + Tax Pro Review | $200 plus $49 per state, according to the Tax Pro Review page. | The listed state charge is per state. |
| Self-Employed + Tax Pro Review | $225 plus $49 per state, according to the Tax Pro Review page. | The listed state charge is per state. |
| Desktop software | Basic $50; Deluxe + State $70; Premium $95; Premium & Business $115, according to the software page. | The page lists state software pricing separately and a $19.95 state e-file fee, with a New York exception. It says prices may change. |
| Tax-pro preparation | The tax-offices page displays a $99 starting estimate plus an additional state fee. The filing-options page separately says in-person filing starts at $89. | These are page-specific starting figures, not a guaranteed quote or a single consistent price. Ask for a quote for your return. |
Because the listed prices differ by channel and page, compare the complete cost for your needs: federal preparation, state return, e-file fee where applicable, and any review or professional-preparation service. A low starting figure is not necessarily the amount you will pay.

Who qualifies for Free Online?
H&R Block says Free Online is for Form 1040 returns with no schedules, except specified schedules that include the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, student-loan interest, and retirement-plan distributions. If your tax situation requires other schedules or features, the free offer may not fit. Review the current eligibility details on H&R Block’s Free Online page before entering your information.
H&R Block estimates that approximately 52% of filers qualify for its Free Online edition. That is the company’s estimate; the page does not identify a year for the figure, and it is not an independently verified eligibility rate.

What Tax Pro Review adds
Tax Pro Review is for people who want to prepare their own online return but have a professional review it. H&R Block says the review typically takes up to three days after you submit the return and documents. Turnaround can vary during peak periods and with the complexity of the return, according to its support page. It is a review service, not the same as having a tax pro prepare the entire return.
How to decide whether H&R Block is worth it
- For a simple return: Check Free Online eligibility first. If you qualify and are comfortable preparing the return yourself, a paid plan may not be necessary.
- For a return needing more features: Compare the online plan or desktop edition that supports your needs, including state-related charges. Desktop and online prices are distinct.
- If you want a professional check: Compare the Tax Pro Review combination price with the cost of DIY alone, and decide whether review is the level of help you want.
- If you want someone else to prepare the return: Request a tax-pro quote and compare it with the total for DIY or desktop software. The displayed professional-service starting prices are not substitutes for an individualized estimate.
- Before paying: Verify the forms and tax situation supported by the chosen product, whether state filing is included, and the final federal-plus-state-plus-add-on amount at checkout.
Guarantees and what they do—and do not—show
H&R Block advertises accuracy and maximum-refund guarantees and describes remedies for certain errors on its product pages. Those are company-stated terms, not evidence that the service has a lower error rate than competitors or that claims have a particular outcome. Read the applicable guarantee terms for the channel you select rather than treating a guarantee as proof of comparative performance.

The available product information establishes the range of H&R Block services and the prices displayed on its pages, but it does not establish independent comparative accuracy, personal testing results, or customer outcomes. That means the decision is best made on fit, support, eligibility, and the final price—not on an assumed performance advantage.
