HPE’s “AI supercomputer factory” refers to a planned manufacturing facility in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic—not an OpenAI facility or a public AI service. Hewlett Packard Enterprise announced the site on May 18, 2022, saying it would make HPE Apollo and HPE Cray EX systems, with operations planned for summer 2022. That announcement is a plan, not independent confirmation of when the factory opened or whether it is operating today.
What HPE announced in Kutná Hora
HPE described the site as a dedicated factory for high-performance computing (HPC) and AI systems. It said the facility would manufacture and ship HPE systems, with Foxconn, HPE’s manufacturing service partner, supporting manufacturing and shipping. The factory was to sit next to an existing HPE site making industry-standard servers and storage. HPE presented the expansion as a way to accelerate delivery to European customers and strengthen the region’s supplier ecosystem. These details come from HPE’s May 18, 2022 announcement.
Systems named in the announcement
- HPE Apollo: systems for demanding HPC and AI workloads, including AI modeling and training.
- HPE Cray EX: supercomputers intended for high-end computing.
HPE said the plant was designed for liquid-cooled systems, with a reinforced floor and a water circuit to help cool hot water. The company also said an HPE Cray EX cabinet can weigh up to 8,000 pounds (3,628 kilograms), a facility-design detail in its announcement rather than an independently audited specification.
Why the title’s “to open” needs a date qualification
HPE announced that the factory was expected to begin operations in summer 2022. The cited announcement does not establish the actual opening date or the site’s present operating status, so it is more accurate to describe the date as HPE’s plan than as a confirmed opening. Nor does the announcement identify OpenAI as a partner or say the factory was built for OpenAI.

HPE’s then executive vice president and general manager of HPC & AI, Justin Hotard, called the project “another significant investment” HPE had made in Europe. The statement appears in HPE’s announcement.
Three Czech initiatives that are easy to confuse
The Kutná Hora plant is one of three distinct Czech projects involving AI or computing infrastructure. Their purposes and statuses are different:

| Initiative | Purpose and infrastructure | Status described by the cited source | Organizations |
|---|---|---|---|
| HPE Kutná Hora factory | Manufacture HPE Apollo and HPE Cray EX HPC and AI systems | Announced in 2022; summer 2022 operations were planned, but the announcement does not independently confirm opening or current status | HPE, with Foxconn as manufacturing service partner |
| Czech AI Factory (CZAI) | Provide AI services using the KarolAIna AI-optimised supercomputer, data services, software, expert support and application know-how | Launched in May 2026 as a Czech node in the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking AI Factory network | Six Czech institutions, coordinated by VSB – Technical University of Ostrava and IT4Innovations |
| Proposed Czech AI Gigafactory | A proposed specialized AI data center | In June 2026, the Czech government supported participation in a European competition; selection was conditional, not an award or completed build | Construction was described as privately financed; Czech access to computing capacity depended on selection |
The CZAI project announcement says its budget is nearly CZK 1 billion, co-financed equally by EuroHPC JU and the Czech Republic through the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. That figure belongs to CZAI, not HPE’s factory or the proposed Gigafactory. Vít Vondrák, IT4Innovations director and project coordinator, described CZAI’s goal as connecting computing power, data, expert support and application know-how into practical services. See the Czech AI Factory announcement and the Czech government’s account of the Gigafactory proposal.

This is a corporate manufacturing and infrastructure story, not a consumer product launch. HPE’s announced factory was intended to build enterprise systems for demanding computing workloads; it is not a place where individuals can sign up to use an AI chatbot or buy a personal computer. The separate CZAI project is the one described as providing AI-related services to companies, startups, public institutions and research organizations.
