HPE vs. Cisco: Which Networking and Infrastructure Company Fits Your Portfolio?

HPE’s Juniper acquisition reshaped its networking business, while Cisco reported a 3% FY2025 networking revenue decline. Neither fact alone determines which stock fits an investor’s portfolio.

HPE and Cisco are both major enterprise technology companies with broad networking businesses, but neither is automatically the better portfolio fit. HPE’s networking business changed substantially when it completed its Juniper Networks acquisition on July 2, 2025; Cisco’s FY2025 networking product category, meanwhile, declined 3% year over year. Those facts help frame the comparison, but they do not establish which stock offers the better investment: an investor must also assess valuation, cash generation, margins, debt, capital returns, and execution.

How HPE and Cisco differ as networking businesses

HPE’s networking scope now brings together Aruba and Juniper. On July 2, 2025, HPE announced it had completed the Juniper acquisition, adding capabilities in data-center networking, routing, service-provider networks, and AI-native networking to its existing portfolio. HPE said the combination doubled the size of its networking business. That is the company’s description of the strategic effect, not independent evidence that expected benefits have been realized. HPE’s FY2025 filing describes access points, CX and QFX switches, MX and PTX routers, gateways, and management platforms including Mist and Aruba Central. Its data-center portfolio also presents Apstra and Mist capabilities. HPE FY2025 10-K HPE data-center portfolio

Cisco’s networking overview spans campus and access, branch, WAN, data center, hybrid cloud, and multicloud. Named offerings include Catalyst access switches and access points, Meraki products, and Nexus data-center networking. Cisco’s FY2025 reporting also describes AI-ready data-center offerings. These are portfolio descriptions, not comparative tests of performance or customer outcomes. Cisco networking overview Cisco FY2025 annual report

What Cisco’s reported networking revenue says—and does not say

Cisco reported networking product revenue of $28.304 billion for FY2025, down 3% from $29.229 billion in FY2024. Cisco said the decline was mainly due to normalization after elevated product shipments in the prior year and lower campus switching. Its Networking product category includes switching, routing, wireless, and servers. The figures describe Cisco’s reported product category and fiscal years, not the whole company’s revenue or a directly comparable HPE networking figure. Cisco FY2025 annual report

HPE’s acquired portfolio and segment reporting are evolving, while Cisco reports product categories. Cisco’s networking product revenue should not be compared directly with HPE segment revenue without reconciling definitions, acquisition timing, and fiscal periods. For an apples-to-apples momentum comparison, use matched reporting periods and explain what each company includes in the figures.

Compare portfolio fit by the network you need

Investor or business question What to examine
Campus, access, and branch Compare required switching, wireless, management, and branch capabilities across HPE Aruba and Cisco Catalyst or Meraki; a broad product list alone does not establish a better fit.
Data-center, routing, or service-provider exposure HPE now combines Juniper capabilities with Aruba, with products including QFX, MX, and PTX; Cisco’s portfolio includes Nexus and networking across WAN and data-center domains.
AI and cloud networking HPE presents Apstra and Mist data-center capabilities, while Cisco describes AI-ready data-center offerings and hybrid- and multicloud networking. Treat each company’s positioning as a product claim, not proof of superior performance or realized demand.
Business momentum Track reported growth using consistent category definitions and fiscal periods; acquisition effects make HPE’s networking scope especially important to clarify.
Investment suitability Assess company-wide growth, margins, free cash flow, debt, valuation, capital returns, risk tolerance, and portfolio objectives in addition to networking exposure.

For a technology buyer, the practical question is which portfolio matches requirements for campus, routing, data center, cloud management, security, and migration. For a stock investor, product fit is only one part of the decision: the available portfolio and networking figures do not establish valuation, expected return, or suitability for a particular investor.

How to evaluate the stocks without mistaking strategy for results

  1. Define the exposure you want. Decide whether the thesis is about enterprise networking generally, campus upgrades, data-center buildouts, AI-related networking, or a broader technology company. HPE and Cisco both span multiple businesses, so networking alone does not describe either stock.
  2. Read current filings using matched periods. Compare company-wide results and clearly defined business categories. For HPE, account for the Juniper transaction and changing reporting scope; for Cisco, distinguish the Networking product category from total company performance.
  3. Test the financial case. Review margins, cash generation, debt, valuation, and capital returns. The cited networking product and portfolio information does not provide a full investment comparison on these measures.
  4. Separate plans from evidence. HPE’s integration benefits and both companies’ AI-related demand narratives should be treated as forward-looking company views unless reflected in reported results and customer evidence. In a December 3, 2025 announcement, HPE networking executive Rami Rahim said customers need networks purpose-built with and for AI; Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins similarly described AI agents as a source of demand for faster, more intelligent, and more secure networks in Cisco’s FY2025 summary annual report. These statements express management’s outlook, not measured forecasts. HPE December 2025 announcement Cisco FY2025 summary annual report

What the evidence cannot settle

The available company materials establish portfolio descriptions, HPE’s acquisition date, and Cisco’s reported networking revenue. They do not independently measure product performance, customer satisfaction, market share, or either stock’s valuation. A portfolio comparison can help identify what to investigate; it cannot by itself identify the better investment for an individual reader.
