Samsung’s U.S. online trade-in can be a good deal when a promotional credit clearly beats your phone’s likely resale value and the device meets Samsung’s requirements. But the checkout quote is an estimate subject to inspection: Samsung may lower it or value the device at $0, and the trade-in credit may be charged back if you do not follow the rejection process. Document the phone, remove account locks, and understand the return deadline before shipping.
What using Samsung’s trade-in program involves
Samsung advertises instant trade-in credit toward qualifying purchases and accepts some smartphones, tablets, watches, PCs, and earbuds. Eligible devices and offers vary by product, order, promotion, and country; the details here concern Samsung’s U.S. online program. Check the live offer and terms for your specific order at Samsung’s U.S. trade-in page.
- Choose a qualifying new Samsung product and select the trade-in device.
- Answer questions about the old device’s model and condition. Samsung shows an estimated credit at checkout.
- Receive the new device, transfer your data, remove account locks, and prepare the old device for shipment.
- Ship the old device using the instructions and label for that order. Samsung generally gives customers 15 days from receipt of the new device to send the trade-in.
- Samsung receives and evaluates the device, then confirms acceptance or notifies you of an adjustment or rejection. Samsung describes an inspection summary arriving approximately five business days after receipt and evaluation; that is an estimate, not a guaranteed resolution time.
The initial quote is conditional, not a guaranteed payout. Samsung’s U.S. trade-in FAQ describes the requirements and possible outcomes.
What Samsung says the device must meet
“It still works” is not enough by itself. Samsung’s eligibility rules include requirements for the phone’s condition, ownership, security settings, and included items. A device can function in everyday use and still fail inspection.

- It must power on, hold a charge, and not shut off unexpectedly.
- The display must function, without black spots, pixelation, cracks, or breaks. Damage beyond permitted normal wear may disqualify the device unless a specific cracked-device offer applies.
- It must not have water damage or a damaged or swollen battery. A functioning charging and data port is required.
- It must not be blacklisted, leased, or subject to an unpaid installment balance. Samsung says leased devices must be purchased first and installment-plan devices paid off before trade-in.
- Reactivation lock, Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP), and other anti-theft locks must be disabled. The device must be factory-reset and personal information removed.
- Samsung’s U.S. terms require an FCC ID for U.S. eligibility. An S Pen must be included where required.
Small cracks, screen defects, a loose port, corrosion, a missing or nonworking S Pen, an account lock, a financed device, or a model or storage mismatch can all create problems even if the phone otherwise seems usable.
Why some customers report a bad experience
Public complaints describe disputes over alleged cracks or other damage, battery or charging problems, water damage, missing accessories, wrong-model claims, account locks, and damage said to have occurred in transit. Some customers also report delays, inspection photos they dispute, or difficulty getting a clear escalation. These reports are useful as examples of what can go wrong, not proof of how often it happens or that Samsung intentionally misvalues devices.

For context, the Better Business Bureau’s Samsung Electronics America complaint page and posts such as this Reddit account and another customer report show disputed cases. Complaint forums are self-selected: the BBB cautions that published complaints may not represent every customer experience. They do not establish an overall failure rate.
A particularly avoidable issue is confusing a factory reset with removing the account association. A reset erases data, but a Google or Samsung account left attached can still trigger an anti-theft lock. Remove accounts and disable protection before resetting.

What happens if Samsung lowers the credit or rejects the device
Samsung may offer an adjusted value, or value an ineligible device at $0. If Samsung rejects the trade-in, its published process gives you seven days to request the device’s return through the My Orders page. If you do not request it within that period, Samsung says the instant discount—and applicable taxes, according to its help article—may be charged to the original payment method. The seven days are a return-request window; do not assume they guarantee a full appeal or reinspection.
If the device passes review and is accepted, ownership transfers to Samsung and the device cannot be returned. If it is rejected, it can generally be returned when requested within the stated period, but the credit is charged back. Samsung says a device with a damaged or swollen battery may be recycled and cannot be returned because it is unsafe to ship. See Samsung’s rejection guidance and the trade-in FAQ.

If you do not send the old device, Samsung says it can remove the credit and charge it to your original payment method. If you return the new device after sending the trade-in, you may not receive the trade-in credit back. Decide whether you plan to keep the new phone before shipping a valuable old one, and do not send a device with irreplaceable data or sentimental value unless you accept the possibility that it will not come back.
How to reduce the risk before you ship
Before placing the order
- Save screenshots of the quoted credit, selected model and storage, condition answers, promotion, order number, and applicable terms.
- Record the device’s IMEI and serial number.
- Photograph the front, back, sides, camera lenses, charging port, buttons, powered-on screen, and any required accessories. A short video showing it powering on, charging, making a call, connecting to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and reaching the reset screen can add useful context.
These are practical documentation steps, not Samsung requirements. They can help you explain a dispute, but they do not guarantee a reversal.
Best Value
- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Before packing
- Back up photos, messages, authentication codes, and other data; transfer what you need to the new device.
- Remove SIM and microSD cards. Sign out of Samsung, Google, Apple, or other accounts as applicable, and disable anti-theft protections.
- Factory-reset the phone and verify that it reaches the initial setup screen. Confirm that an installment-plan device is paid off.
- Do not include cases, chargers, SIM cards, or unrelated items unless the order instructions specifically require them. Follow Samsung’s one-device-per-box, one-device-per-label instructions.
- Cushion the device on all sides so it cannot move in transit. Use a rigid shipping box with adequate padding, and follow the exact carrier and label instructions for the order. Samsung’s trade-in shipping guidance explains its packing instructions.
After handing it to the carrier
- Keep the carrier acceptance receipt and tracking number; photograph the packed device and labeled box.
- Track delivery with the carrier and save Samsung’s receipt confirmation.
- Monitor email and My Orders. If Samsung reports an adjustment or rejection, note the response deadline immediately.
- Keep the order, condition, and shipping records until the trade-in is accepted and any payment dispute is closed.
How to respond to a disputed adjustment
- Do not let the seven-day return-request window pass if you want the device back and it is returnable. Request return through My Orders when the adjustment is unacceptable.
- Save the notice, inspection photos, order details, IMEI or serial number, shipping proof, and your pre-shipment photos or video.
- Ask Samsung to identify the specific requirement it says was not met, the inspection date, the device identifier it matched, the claimed revised value, and the deadline to accept, reject, or request return. Request photos showing the stated issue.
- Contact Samsung through the order-support channel and ask for escalation. Keep a written record of dates and responses.
- If the issue remains unresolved, you can consider a written BBB complaint or a complaint to the relevant consumer-protection authority. Neither is a guaranteed remedy.
A card chargeback is a separate dispute with potential consequences involving the merchant or financing provider; it is not a substitute for following Samsung’s return process. Public complaint outcomes vary, including cases marked resolved, answered but not accepted, and unresolved.
Is Samsung’s offer better than selling or using another trade-in?
Compare what you actually pay for the new phone, not just the headline credit. A Samsung instant credit is applied to a qualifying purchase at checkout. Carrier promotions generally use a different mechanism, often monthly bill credits after the carrier accepts the device; do not assume they stack with Samsung’s offer. The order’s terms determine what can be combined.
| Option | Potential advantage | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung online trade-in | Convenient instant credit and potentially strong promotional value toward a Samsung purchase. | Credit is conditional on inspection; shipping, valuation, and chargeback rules apply. |
| Carrier promotion | May provide substantial value for an upgrade through that carrier. | Check required plan, monthly-credit schedule, fees, device eligibility, and what happens if you leave or change plans. |
| In-person Samsung Experience Store or retailer | May reduce shipping risk and let you see an offer in person. | Availability, eligibility, inspection rules, and promotional value can differ; an in-person transaction is not dispute-proof. |
| Independent sale through Swappa or eBay | May produce higher proceeds for a desirable phone in excellent condition. | You handle listing, buyer expectations, fees, shipping, and potential payment or delivery disputes. Check live fees and comparable listings. |
| Keep the old device | Avoids trade-in shipping and valuation uncertainty. | You give up the credit or sale proceeds and should still securely erase the device if you later dispose of it. |
Use two calculations:
- Samsung’s effective cost: new-device price minus the accepted trade-in credit, plus taxes and fees, plus any financing or carrier costs.
- Private-sale net: likely sale price minus platform fees, shipping, payment risk, and the value of your time.
Compare those figures with retailer and carrier offers using the same new-device price and any required plan. Samsung’s credit is most compelling when a promotion creates a meaningful premium over realistic resale proceeds. If its quote is only slightly better, a borderline device or a chargeback you could not absorb may make the convenience a poor trade.
Who should use Samsung’s online trade-in?
- It may suit you if the promotional credit is substantially above likely resale proceeds, your device is clearly eligible and paid off, you want a low-effort upgrade, and you can handle a possible later charge while a dispute is resolved.
- Consider another route if the phone has borderline damage, a battery or port problem, uncertain ownership or payoff status, or sensitive data you cannot confidently transfer; if the credit is essential to affording the new phone; or if a sudden chargeback would create financial hardship.
For an excellent-condition, popular Galaxy phone, compare live net proceeds on Swappa or eBay with Samsung’s exact offer. A retailer such as Best Buy may offer a different trade-in route. If you are comparing ecosystems, check the current terms for Apple Trade In or the Google Store trade-in. Values and eligibility differ, so none can be assumed to beat Samsung’s current offer.
