Zara’s growth is best explained by the operating model of its parent company, Inditex: customer-oriented design, production close enough to respond during a selling season, and physical stores working alongside online platforms. Zara opened its first store in A Coruña, Spain, on May 9, 1975. The often-repeated claim that it began with “30 euros” is not established by Zara’s official history page. And the figure of more than 7,000 stores refers to an undated Inditex group count—not Zara alone.
How did Zara become so successful?
Inditex says its business model is customer-oriented and built around proximity production, allowing the company to react during the season. In practical terms, the stated approach connects customer response with product decisions and the ability to adjust as a season unfolds. Inditex CEO Óscar García Maceiras described the principle in the company’s 2025 annual report: “The key to this performance remains anchored in our unique business model, in which it is our customers who determine our brands’ priorities.”
Inditex’s business-model page also says Zara sees 18,000 models per year and that new models reach all stores twice weekly. The page does not state the year for these figures, so they should be read as company-published, undated descriptions rather than a current, independently verified operating count. The cadence helps explain how Inditex presents the model: frequent product introduction and the capacity to respond within a season, rather than relying only on a fixed collection planned far in advance.
These are the company’s descriptions of its approach, not proof that any single practice caused Zara’s growth. Its scale, customer response, product decisions, production network, and distribution operate as parts of a broader retail system.

How do Zara’s stores and online sales work together?
Inditex presents physical shops and digital channels as complementary. In its 2024 CEO statement, García Maceiras called their “mutual and complementary support” a key differentiating factor. The same report says Inditex reached customers through online sales in 214 markets at year-end 2024. That is a group-level online reach figure, not a count of Zara stores or countries in which every Zara service is necessarily available.
This integration matters to the operating model because stores and online platforms are described as parts of one customer-facing system, rather than as unrelated sales channels. Inditex’s statement establishes how the group characterizes that relationship; it does not quantify the separate contribution of stores or online sales to Zara’s results.

Did Zara really start with 30 euros?
Zara’s official anniversary page establishes that its first store opened in A Coruña, Spain, on May 9, 1975. It does not verify the “30 euros” startup detail. Without a reliable source for that specific amount, it should not be treated as established history.
The verified milestone is the opening date and location. It is also important not to read later Inditex group scale backward as Zara’s own store count: Inditex operates multiple brands, and its published group totals cover them collectively.

How many Zara stores are there worldwide?
The figures cited here do not establish a current Zara-only worldwide store count. Inditex’s business-model page lists 7,013 stores but gives no date, and the figure is for the group rather than Zara alone. Inditex’s 2025 annual report gives a more precisely dated group figure: 5,460 stores across 97 markets at the close of fiscal 2025. Neither number should be presented as Zara’s standalone footprint.
| Figure | What it covers | Date qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 7,013 stores | Inditex group; not Zara alone | Undated on Inditex’s business-model page |
| 5,460 stores across 97 markets | Inditex group; not Zara alone | At the close of fiscal 2025, per Inditex’s 2025 annual report |
What do Inditex’s financial results say about Zara’s scale?
Inditex’s CEO letter reports group revenue of €39.9 billion and group net profit of €6.2 billion for 2025. These are parent-company results, not Zara-only financials. They show the scale of the wider group, but cannot be used to infer Zara’s individual revenue or profit without brand-specific reporting.
Rank #4
The distinction is central to interpreting the story: Zara is a major brand within Inditex, while store counts and financial figures cited in the group’s annual reports describe the parent company unless explicitly identified as brand-specific.
