Edwin Drake’s 1859 well at Titusville helped establish practical oil production; current U.S. gasoline prices reflect crude-oil costs alongside refining, regional fuel markets, distribution, retail margins and taxes.
What happened at Titusville in 1859?
On August 27, 1859, Edwin Drake struck oil 69 feet below the surface at Titusville, Pennsylvania. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) identifies the well as the first practical oil recovery system to combine salt-well drilling techniques with modern pipe-driving methods, and a landmark in the beginning of the U.S. petroleum industry. ASME describes its significance this way: “The drilling of this oil well marks the modern phase of the petroleum industry.” ASME’s landmark record of the Drake well

This is a pivotal modern production story, not the first human use of petroleum or the first oil extraction anywhere. ASME notes that oil excavation in the area reached back to the 1500s; uses for oil were explored in the 1800s, and it was developed as an illuminant by the 1850s. Drake’s achievement helped make practical, sustained production possible at a moment when demand for illuminating oil was growing.

No. Crude oil is a major input to gasoline, so changes in crude prices can affect fuel costs, but the pump price is not a direct one-for-one reflection of a crude benchmark. EIA identifies four broad components of retail gasoline prices:
#1 Best Overall
- 【High-Visibility 3D Display】 Features a high-definition LED digital display that creates a striking 3D effect; the digits are sharp and prominent, ensuring quick readability even from a distance.

- Refining costs and margins
- Distribution and retail costs and margins
- Taxes
Gasoline supply and demand, regional inventories and wholesale gasoline margins also matter. A refinery’s costs and margins can shift; so can the cost of moving fuel to a market, local competition and taxes. As a result, retail prices may respond differently across locations and over time, even when crude prices move in the same direction.
In a 2014 report, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated that refinery crude costs accounted for about two-thirds of the pump price in the period it examined. That is a historical estimate, not a current or universal share. The same report notes that a $1-per-barrel crude change converts arithmetically to about 2.38 cents per gallon using 42 gallons per barrel; that conversion does not guarantee a matching change at the pump, where other market conditions shape the actual response. Which oil prices and gasoline prices are used today?
There is no single Pennsylvania oil-market price that sets gasoline nationwide. Market participants and analysts track distinct crude benchmarks and regional gasoline spot prices. EIA’s series identify West Texas Intermediate (WTI) with Cushing, Oklahoma, and Brent with Europe. It also publishes gasoline spot prices for specific hubs, including New York Harbor and the U.S. Gulf Coast. These are different products and market locations, not interchangeable measures or retail pump prices.
For a dated illustration, EIA’s weekly spot-price table released October 7, 2026, reported these values for the week ending October 2, 2026. The weekly figures are unweighted averages of daily closing spot prices:

| Market series | Location or context | Spot price for week ending October 2, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| WTI crude | Cushing, Oklahoma | $98.07 per barrel |
| Brent crude | Europe | $120.03 per barrel |
| Regular gasoline | New York Harbor | $3.433 per gallon |
These are dated spot prices, not what a driver paid at a service station. Retail pump prices include additional costs and margins, and the gasoline figure is specific to regular gasoline at New York Harbor rather than every grade or region. EIA’s weekly crude oil and gasoline spot-price table
Why do WTI and Brent matter differently to gasoline?
WTI and Brent are separate crude benchmarks, with different geographic and delivery contexts. Their prices can diverge, so it is misleading to treat either one as a universal proxy for every barrel of crude or every gasoline market.

EIA’s October 2014 study analyzed data from January 2000 through June 2014. It found that after WTI became significantly discounted to Brent around 2011, WTI lost much of its explanatory power for changes in U.S. gasoline prices, while Brent lost very little. The study also identified regional gasoline inventories and wholesale gasoline margins—often called crack spreads—as relevant influences. This is a finding from that historical period and analysis, not a fresh estimate of today’s price relationships. EIA’s October 2014 analysis of gasoline prices
What the Pennsylvania origin means for a household budget
The Titusville story explains an important beginning of U.S. oil production; it does not identify the benchmark that determines a driver’s local price today. To understand a price change, distinguish crude benchmarks from regional gasoline spot markets, then distinguish wholesale spot prices from the retail price at the pump. Location, fuel grade, refining and distribution conditions, retail margins and taxes all affect what a household ultimately pays.
