UPI is a payment system that routes payment instructions between participating apps and banks. In a typical bank-linked payment, your UPI ID is the address used to identify where money should go, your bank account is where the money is held, and your UPI PIN authorizes a debit. You do not need to enter your PIN to receive money.
What is UPI?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) defines UPI as an instant payment system it developed as an RBI-regulated entity. UPI is built over IMPS infrastructure and enables transfers between parties’ bank accounts. NPCI describes it as a real-time inter-bank payment solution launched in 2016. See the NPCI UPI FAQ and NPCI product booklet.
In the ordinary bank-linked flow, UPI is a payment rail, not a wallet balance: the payer’s linked bank account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited. Some UPI arrangements also support linked prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallets, subject to issuer and app support.
What each part of a UPI payment does
| Part | Role |
|---|---|
| UPI ID or payment address | Identifies a recipient for a payment; it is not an account balance. NPCI also uses the terms “Virtual ID” and “Payment Address.” |
| Bank account | Normally holds the funds that are debited from the payer or credited to the recipient. |
| Payment app or PSP | Provides the interface for registration, account discovery, payment initiation, and transaction status. The app and the bank have distinct roles. |
| UPI PIN | A 4–6 digit credential used to authorize a bank transaction. It is not your UPI ID or bank password. |
| UPI system and participating banks | Handle the payment instruction between the participants; the beneficiary bank credits the recipient when processing succeeds. |
A UPI ID can look like xyz@upi, though the handle varies by app or PSP. Payments can also be made using an account number and IFSC where the app offers that option. An ID is a payment address, not proof that funds have been received.

How a typical UPI payment works
- Register and link an account. Set up UPI in a participating app and link an eligible bank account. NPCI says the mobile number verified by the app should match the number linked to the bank account for account discovery.
- Choose the recipient and amount. Select a contact or merchant, scan a QR code, or enter a UPI ID. Review the recipient name and amount shown before continuing. A merchant QR can include the merchant’s UPI ID and, where applicable, the amount.
- Authorize the debit. Enter your UPI PIN when prompted to approve the transaction. NPCI describes UPI as using one-click two-factor authentication under applicable RBI guidelines, with the PIN as the second factor.
- Check the result. The instruction is handled through UPI and participating banks. The app displays a status, and the beneficiary bank credits the recipient when processing succeeds.
- Confirm both sides if needed. Check your transaction status and the recipient’s account or confirmation. If you were debited but the recipient was not credited, use the app’s complaint path or contact your bank.
UPI is described by NPCI as instant and available 24/7, but that does not mean every transaction succeeds immediately. Network, bank, or beneficiary-side issues can leave an individual payment failed or pending.
What your UPI ID, bank account, app, and PIN mean
UPI ID: a payment address
Your UPI ID lets someone address a payment to you without entering your bank account number and IFSC. It does not store money. A person may be able to link more than one bank account in an app, and a UPI ID may be associated with multiple accounts depending on the PSP’s features. If you change apps, you may need to register again or use a new VPA handle; do not assume every ID transfers unchanged.

Bank account: where funds normally move
For a standard bank-linked transfer, the payer’s selected account is debited and the recipient’s account is credited. Some apps let you choose among multiple linked accounts. The app’s display is not itself the source of the money.
App or PSP: the interface and payment initiation
A payment app or payment service provider (PSP) helps register a user, discover eligible accounts, initiate payments, and display transaction information. NPCI’s BHIM listing is one example: BHIM supports bank-to-bank payments, pay and collect using a mobile number or VPA, and switching among linked accounts. That describes one app’s listed functions, not a ranking against other apps. See NPCI’s BHIM product overview.

UPI PIN: authorization, not a receiving code
The PIN is the 4–6 digit code you create during setup to authorize transactions. NPCI distinguishes the UPI PIN from a bank-issued MPIN. Keep it private: NPCI says customer support will not ask for it. A request to enter your PIN is authorization for a transaction, not a step required to receive money.
What to do if a UPI payment is pending or failed
- Check the transaction status in the app and review whether the payer was debited and the recipient credited before attempting another payment.
- If your account was debited without a matching credit, raise a complaint through the UPI app or contact the participating bank. NPCI says reversals are provided for declines and advises contacting the bank if an expected reversal is delayed.
- Do not assume a fixed resolution time. Handling can depend on the bank, app, and current rules; follow the status and grievance guidance provided by your provider.
- If your phone or SIM is lost, contact your mobile provider to block the number and promptly contact your bank or app provider. A device or app change may require UPI re-registration.
For any payment, verify the recipient and amount before authorizing. Never disclose your UPI PIN to a caller, merchant, or person claiming to provide support.

What are UPI transaction limits?
Limits depend on payment category and provider. NPCI’s FAQ states a normal transaction limit of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It lists up to ₹2 lakh for certain categories, including capital markets, collections, insurance, and foreign inward remittances, and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are NPCI FAQ figures, not a guarantee that every bank or app permits the maximum. Check the applicable bank or app limit and current category rules before making a payment.

Not everywhere. NPCI describes UPI Global Acceptance for QR payments at select international merchant locations, using Indian bank accounts through enabled apps. Availability depends on the country, participating merchant, bank, and app. Before authorizing, check the amount shown in local currency and Indian rupees, along with the exchange rate and any fees.

NPCI’s monthly statistics reported 24,508.96 million transactions, transaction value of ₹29,82,355.95 crore, and 752 banks live for August 2026. The table labels volume in millions and value in crore; NPCI notes that same-account debit/credit transactions have been excluded from August 2018 onward. How to choose a UPI app
There is no supported universal “best” app ranking here. Compare an app based on your own bank and account support, the functions you need, and the provider’s usability and support arrangements.
Quick Recap
- Confirm that your bank and intended account are supported.
- Check for the features you use, such as QR payments, collect requests, linked accounts, transaction history, and a clear complaint process.
- Consider accessibility and whether the app makes recipient details and payment status easy to review.
- Check how to contact the app provider and your bank if a transaction is pending or disputed.
