Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Then identify whether it was a person-to-person transfer or a merchant payment: RBI’s reversal deadlines differ—T+1 for an uncredited transfer and T+5 for a merchant debit without confirmation. If it remains unresolved, report it through the app or your bank and keep the transaction reference.
Check the payment status before trying again
- Open the UPI app’s transaction history. Select the specific payment and note its displayed status, date and time, amount, payee, and transaction or reference number. NPCI says transaction history includes past and pending payments. NPCI’s UPI FAQ
- Check your bank account as well. Look at the account statement or bank alert to see whether the amount was debited. Ask the recipient or merchant to check for credit or confirmation if appropriate.
- Do not pay again just because the first screen is slow to update. Establish whether the first payment is pending, failed, or successful before initiating another one; otherwise you may make a duplicate payment.
A debit on your account does not, by itself, prove that the recipient received the money. Keep the app status and account evidence together when you contact support.
Identify whether it was a transfer or a merchant payment
| Payment type | What needs to be confirmed | RBI reversal deadline if the stated failure applies |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer to a person | Whether the beneficiary’s account was credited | T+1 if the payer was debited but the beneficiary account could not be credited |
| Payment to a merchant | Whether transaction confirmation reached the merchant location | T+5 if the account was debited but confirmation was not received at the merchant location |
These deadlines and the applicable compensation are set out in the Reserve Bank of India’s failed-transaction framework. T is the transaction date. The framework states the limit in days; it does not promise a particular number of clock hours.
For a transfer, NPCI describes a “deemed approved” situation in which the beneficiary bank has not provided online credit confirmation. If the account was not credited online, it is to be manually processed under applicable RBI guidance. For a merchant payment, the issue may be the missing confirmation at the merchant rather than an uncredited personal account. NPCI’s UPI ecosystem guidance discusses the former status, and its customer support guidance distinguishes merchant issues.

Allow the applicable reversal window
Person-to-person transfer: T+1
If your account was debited but the beneficiary account cannot be credited, RBI’s framework says the beneficiary bank should auto-reverse the transaction by T+1. If reversal is delayed beyond T+1, the framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day for the delay.
Merchant payment: T+5
If your account was debited but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation at the merchant location, the auto-reversal limit is T+5. The framework specifies compensation of ₹100 per day for delay beyond T+5.

NPCI’s consumer FAQ separately says a failed payment is refunded and advises contacting bank customer support if that refund has not arrived within one hour. For a pending transfer awaiting beneficiary credit, it says the amount will reach the recipient within 48 hours. Those are NPCI FAQ statements, not a reason to apply one deadline to every case; use the relevant RBI transaction-type limit above when assessing the formal reversal deadline. NPCI UPI FAQ
Report a payment that remains unresolved
- Use the issue or grievance option in the payment’s transaction view, if available. NPCI says BHIM users can report a declined transaction from its transaction view, and its FAQ says customers may raise a grievance or check status through a participating bank’s UPI app. The exact labels can vary by app. BHIM product overview
- Contact your bank with the transaction reference. Explain whether the payment was to a person or a merchant, what the app shows, whether your account was debited, and whether the recipient or merchant confirms receipt.
- Use NPCI’s complaint facility to check status or register a complaint. NPCI says the facility routes a complaint to the relevant member institution, which is responsible for resolving it. Keep the complaint number and any response for follow-up. NPCI complaint facility
- Escalate through RBI if the regulated entity has not replied within the applicable period or you are dissatisfied with the response or resolution. RBI’s current FAQ describes escalation under the Reserve Bank–Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, which came into force on July 1, 2026 and replaced the 2021 scheme for new matters. Handle suspected fraud differently
If the debit is unidentified or you did not authorise it, contact your bank directly and promptly rather than treating it as an ordinary pending payment. NPCI says complaints about fraudulent, unidentified, or unauthorised transactions should be raised with the customer’s bank. Do not share your UPI PIN, OTP, full credentials, or screen-sharing access with anyone claiming they need them to reverse a payment. NPCI says bank customer support will never ask for your UPI PIN. No. NPCI says that once a payment is initiated, it cannot be stopped. If you suspect the payment did not complete as intended, verify its status and contact your bank or app support to raise a complaint or recovery request; do not assume the sender can cancel a completed transfer. NPCI UPI FAQ
