United Airlines dates its origins to April 6, 1926, when Varney Air Lines began carrying airmail from Pasco, Washington, toward Boise, Idaho. That flight came as federal policy was opening mail routes to private carriers—and the Varney family tree later connected United’s founding lineage with Continental Airlines.

Why did United begin with airmail?

In the 1920s, carrying mail offered a commercial opportunity for early aviation companies. The Air Mail Act of 1925 opened U.S. mail delivery by private carriers to competitive bidding. The Federal Aviation Administration says the act helped make a profitable commercial airline industry possible.

Varney Air Lines took off the following year. United’s 2016 anniversary release identifies a Swallow aircraft’s April 6, 1926 departure from Pasco, Washington, on an airmail route toward Boise, Idaho, as the beginning of the airline’s 90-year history. The flight was an important starting point in United’s corporate lineage, not the instant creation of today’s global passenger airline.

How did Varney Air Lines become part of United?

United’s 2010 merger-planning document traces a sequence of company-name and ownership changes from Varney Air Lines to United Air Lines:

Date Event in the lineage
April 6, 1926 Varney Air Lines begins airmail service on a route from Pasco toward Boise, according to United’s 2016 anniversary release.
1930 Walter T. Varney sells his air group to United Aircraft and Transport, according to United’s merger-planning document.
1933 United Aircraft and Transport is renamed United Air Lines, the same document says.

This is a corporate lineage, not a claim that one mail flight immediately became the modern airline. The intervening transfers and name change are part of the story.

What connects United and Continental Airlines?

Walter T. Varney’s aviation history also runs through a separate company. In 1934, Varney and Louis Mueller founded Varney Speed Lines. Robert Six acquired it and renamed it Continental Airlines in 1937, according to United’s 2010 merger-planning document.

Varney Air Lines and Varney Speed Lines were distinct businesses. Their connection is Walter T. Varney, not a single company changing its name from one to the other. United and Continental later came together in the 2010 merger; United’s merger-planning document presented their earlier Varney links as shared roots.

How large is United today?

United Airlines Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 12, 2026, describes a company connecting around 181 million passengers to more than 380 destinations across six continents. Those are company-reported scale figures in the filing, not independent historical measures.

The same filing lists a mainline fleet of 1,066 aircraft as of December 31, 2025, and identifies United as the largest airline by available seat miles. The fleet figure refers specifically to mainline aircraft; it should not be read as a count of every aircraft across all affiliated operations.

What the origin story does—and does not—show

The documented early story links a private airmail route, a federal policy shift that helped commercial aviation develop, and a set of company changes that placed Varney Air Lines in United’s lineage. It also reveals a separate Varney-founded carrier in Continental’s history. These milestones explain United’s starting point and one important connection in its corporate family tree; they are not a continuous account of every later transformation into a passenger giant.
