Uber drivers who lose app access should start with the deactivation notice and the Review Center or appeal instructions it provides. Uber says its U.S. process includes human review for many deactivations, but drivers interviewed by Futurism described difficulty getting a reason or reaching support. The path—and any legal protections—can depend on the reason for the lockout, whether it is temporary, the worker’s role, and where they work.
What drivers say happens when they are locked out
In a March 19, 2025 report, Futurism interviewed drivers who described losing access to the app and struggling to get answers or restore it. Their accounts illustrate the stakes, but they do not establish that every driver faces the same process or that every disputed deactivation is mistaken.
Reported cases
- Bernard Moses, who said he had driven in the Chicago area for nearly ten years, told Futurism he was locked out after a customer complaint. He described repeated calls and unanswered attempts to reconnect with an Uber contact, and said he still lacked closure nearly a year later.
- Denver driver Karim Sawadogo said a rider accused him of drinking and driving. He said he sought police and clinic documentation, continued messaging Uber, and then found he could no longer message or call. Futurism reported that he later traveled to Uber’s San Francisco headquarters and regained access after a worker heard him out. That is his reported experience, not a reliable or generally available appeal method.
- Former Bay Area driver April Granado told Futurism that Uber permanently deactivated her days after an incident involving a rider’s child safety seat. The report said she had canceled the ride and reported the incident; it was updated to clarify the circumstances.
What the survey figures do—and do not—show
Futurism reported findings from an Action Center on Race and the Economy (ACRE) survey of 727 rideshare drivers who had been deactivated within the previous five years. The article said 15% reported receiving no reason, 85% reported no prior warning, close to two-thirds said they fell behind on bills, and 14% faced losing their homes. These are survey results as reported by Futurism; the available account does not provide enough methodology detail to treat them as representative estimates for all Uber drivers.
The same report said Black drivers reported customer-complaint deactivation at a rate 7 percentage points higher than white drivers and lower reinstatement rates. It also reported that 20% of Latin American drivers, compared with 15% of other drivers, said they received no explanation for permanent suspension. These reported comparisons do not by themselves establish why the differences occurred.

How Uber says its U.S. review process works
Uber’s U.S. deactivation policy describes an in-app Review Center for deactivated drivers and delivery people, with manual human review and the ability to submit additional information. Uber’s Help page on appealing a deactivation says a person may request an appeal if they believe the decision was an error or have relevant additional information, subject to the conditions of the process.
The path is not described as universal. Uber identifies expired documents and background-check issues among common reasons for losing access, and its policy notes that some background-check issues may not go through the Review Center. The notice, the reason for access loss, and whether the account is temporarily held or deactivated can affect what options apply. Uber’s pages do not promise a response time or a particular outcome.

In a statement reproduced by Futurism, Uber said it informs drivers of a reason and appeal instructions and had expanded its in-app, human-led Review Center to nearly all deactivation reasons. It also said: “Uber never deactivates a driver because we want to. We do it when we need to: to ensure the safe and reliable functioning of our platform.” That company description is distinct from the interviewed drivers’ reports of difficulty reaching support or getting a resolution.
What to do if your account access is removed
- Read the notice closely. Identify the stated reason, whether the action is temporary or permanent, any deadline or appeal instructions, and the channel the notice directs you to use.
- Open the Review Center or appeal route identified by Uber. Check the current in-app Help instructions as well as the notice. If the app itself is inaccessible, use the contact or appeal channel specified in the notice or Uber’s Help materials rather than assuming every account has the same fallback.
- Send relevant evidence with a concise explanation. Include information tied to the stated reason—such as trip details or documents—if the appeal channel accepts it. Uber’s policy says additional information can be considered; it does not guarantee reinstatement.
- Keep a dated record. Save the notice, submitted materials, trip details relevant to the dispute, and copies or screenshots of communications. This can help you keep the facts and follow-ups organized if support contact is difficult.
- Check whether a local process applies. Rules can vary by location and by whether the worker is a rideshare driver or delivery person. If you believe a legal protection applies, consult the relevant local rules or a qualified worker-rights or legal resource.
Why location and worker category matter
Uber’s U.S. policy is not a substitute for a local rule. The available examples differ by jurisdiction and covered worker group:

Before relying on a local protection, confirm that it applies to your location, work category, and type of account action. A temporary access hold, a permanent deactivation, and a background-check issue may not follow the same route.
