Trump’s tariffs can affect gaming when consoles, controllers, accessories, or components enter the United States, but there is no single tariff rate for all gaming products—and the available evidence does not establish a current price increase for any particular console. The answer depends on the product’s customs classification, origin, import date, and any tariff exclusions that apply.
What the tariff record says about gaming products
The clearest gaming-specific evidence is dated industry testimony, not a current customs ruling for a named product. At a USTR-hosted public hearing on December 16, 2025, an industry representative said video game consoles had been paying the reciprocal tariffs announced in April 2025. The testimony also said consoles were not then subject to the Section 301 investigation being discussed, and named consoles, controllers, and accessories among the consumer electronics products at issue.

That account describes the situation as represented at the hearing. It does not establish the tariff treatment of a particular console today, or show that the same treatment applies to every controller or accessory. Nor does it provide a universal rate for gaming products.

Does the 2026 semiconductor tariff apply to consoles?
Not automatically. A White House proclamation dated January 14, 2026, imposes a 25% ad valorem duty on the semiconductor products it defines as covered. It took effect for covered goods entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after January 15, 2026. The proclamation includes exceptions, among them imports for non-data-center consumer applications, research and development, startups, and repairs or replacements. It also specifies that its covered-product duty is not stacked with certain named earlier tariff orders.

The administration described the measure in a companion fact sheet as concerning certain advanced computing chips, and said it does not apply to chips imported to support U.S. technology supply-chain buildout or domestic manufacturing capacity for semiconductor derivatives. The proclamation, rather than that summary, defines the operative coverage and terms.
A console contains semiconductors, but that fact alone does not establish that the console or a chip in it falls within the proclamation’s covered products. Coverage and any exception must be assessed against the actual product, its classification, and relevant facts about its import and use. The 25% figure is therefore not a general rate for consoles or gaming electronics.

Which gaming products may be affected?
| Product category | What the available evidence establishes | What still determines treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Video game consoles | December 2025 hearing testimony said consoles were paying the April 2025 reciprocal tariffs at that time and were not then subject to the Section 301 investigation discussed. | Current tariff measures, the console’s HTS classification, origin, entry date, and any applicable exclusion. |
| Controllers and accessories | The same hearing passage specifically named these categories in its consumer-electronics tariff discussion. | The individual item’s classification, origin, entry date, and applicable measures or exclusions; the testimony does not supply a rate for each item. |
| Semiconductors or other components | The January 2026 proclamation establishes a 25% duty for its defined covered semiconductor products, subject to its terms and exceptions. | Whether the imported item is covered, whether an exception applies, and how the measure interacts with other applicable actions. |
The table reflects distinct kinds of evidence: the console statements are a dated account of industry testimony, while the 2026 semiconductor duty is a legal measure with defined scope. Neither should be generalized into a rate for every gaming product.
Will tariffs make video game consoles more expensive?
They could raise the cost of importing a product that is subject to a duty, but that does not prove a particular retail price will rise. The importer pays applicable customs duties; how any added cost affects a consumer price depends on business decisions and other costs. A company might pass through some cost, absorb it, adjust other expenses, or change sourcing. Those are possible channels, not measured outcomes established by the available figures.

No exact, independently attributable estimate is established here for tariff-caused console price increases, lower sales, changes to game development costs, or gaming-sector job losses. The December 2025 hearing passage also relayed broad industry claims of “tens of thousands” of U.S. jobs and “billions” in U.S. research and development investment, but supplied neither precise figures nor a named speaker in the available excerpt. Those claims are not measurements of tariff effects.

A reliable model-specific estimate requires customs details, not just a product name or the country where a brand is based. Before estimating a duty, establish these facts:

- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; DualSense; USB cable, HDMI cable.
- Product classification: Find the applicable Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classification for the console, controller, accessory, or component. Similar-looking products do not necessarily share a classification.
- Country of origin: Determine the product’s customs origin; it may differ from the location of the company’s headquarters or the place where a shipment is dispatched.
- Entry date: Compare the date the goods enter the relevant customs process with the effective date of each applicable measure.
- Current measures and exceptions: Check whether a tariff action covers the classified product and whether an exclusion applies to the product or its use.
The USITC reports that 2026 HTS Revision 20 was published on September 28, 2026. Because schedules and policy actions can change, use the current HTS and verify the legal text and effective date for any applicable action. USTR’s presidential tariff actions index can help locate actions and updates, but the controlling terms must be checked in the primary legal text. No current HTS classification or customs ruling for a specific console model is established here.
What this means for gamers and the industry
For consumers, a tariff headline is not enough to calculate a console’s price or predict a future increase. For manufacturers, importers, and retailers, exposure depends on the precise products and supply chains involved. Tariffs may add cost or create uncertainty where products are covered, but claims about resulting retail prices, sales, employment, or development budgets require product-level and market evidence beyond the policy record described above.
