A product description is more useful when it helps a specific shopper decide whether an item fits their needs. Lead with a relevant benefit, support it with verified product facts, answer likely buying questions, and make the details easy to scan. No template guarantees sales: price, images, availability, audience, and other parts of the product page also affect results.
What a product description needs to do
Good product copy does more than praise an item. It helps a shopper understand what it is, what it does, whether it suits their situation, and what they need to know before buying. Nielsen Norman Group summarizes the core task as: “Key content requirements for product pages are: answer users’ questions, be direct, and help with product comparison.” Nielsen Norman Group’s product-page guidance discusses incomplete or unclear information as a usability problem; its 2014 study context attributed 20% of overall task failures to that issue. That historical finding is not a current or universal estimate of lost sales.
Specific details are more useful than unsupported praise. “Excellent quality” gives a shopper little to assess. Material, measurements, capacity, fit, care instructions, compatibility, included components, and appropriate use are concrete facts—when relevant to the product and verified by the seller.
Build a fact sheet before writing
Gather the information a shopper needs before drafting. Do not infer missing specifications or turn an assumption into a claim. Shopify recommends identifying the target customer, using their vocabulary, highlighting benefits, including product details, and avoiding vague claims. Shopify’s product-description guidance also says: “Make sure that any claims that you make about your products are factual.”

#1 Best Overall
- Product identity: What is the item, and which version, size, or variant is this page describing?
- Audience and use: Who is likely to use it, and in what situation?
- Specifications: What are its materials or ingredients, dimensions, capacity, functions, fit, and compatibility?
- Practical details: How is it used, cleaned, stored, or maintained?
- Purchase scope: What is included, and what relevant limitations or exclusions apply?
- Evidence: Which claims about performance, origin, comparison, or quality can you substantiate?
Use only the categories that matter for the item. A clothing page may need garment measurements and fit information; a kitchen product may need capacity, material, and care instructions. If you cannot verify a fact, leave it out or confirm it before publishing.
Choose a benefit and prove it with a feature
Lead with the most useful outcome for the intended shopper, then name the feature that makes that outcome plausible. The benefit gives the detail meaning; the feature lets the shopper evaluate the claim.
- Feature: A water bottle has a 750 ml capacity.
- Buyer-relevant explanation: That capacity may suit someone who wants to carry a larger drink between refills.
Keep the wording aligned with what you know. A specification supports a factual description of the item; it does not automatically prove a broader performance claim. Avoid “best,” “premium,” or “high quality” unless you explain what those words mean and have evidence for the claim. For a comparison with competitors, state the basis of comparison or tone it down.

Sensory language can help a shopper imagine an experience, especially for products where texture, scent, taste, or sound matters. Use it alongside concrete details, not instead of them. If you include testimonials, make sure they are genuine and accurately attributed, and present them as an individual customer’s opinion rather than proof that everyone will have the same experience.

There is no universal checklist for every category. Ask what a shopper would need to know to judge fit, use, and value, then put the answers where they can be found. NielsenIQ’s description framework includes audience, benefit, use, composition, and product value. NielsenIQ’s product-description guidance offers that lens for deciding which information belongs on the page.
- What is it made of, or what ingredients does it contain?
- What are its dimensions, capacity, sizing, or fit?
- How does it work, and what uses or compatibility limits should a buyer know?
- How should it be cared for, cleaned, or stored?
- What comes in the package, and what does not?
- What makes it a suitable choice for this shopper, based on verifiable details?
Customer reviews, support inquiries, and onsite search can reveal the questions people actually ask. Keep their wording where it accurately describes the product; do not replace it with jargon just because it sounds more marketable. Answer the practical questions before adding a brand story or other optional narrative.

This is an adaptable writing aid, not a formula proven to increase sales. A simple item may need only a short paragraph and a few specifications; a complex product may need more explanation. The useful length depends on what shoppers need to decide, not a universal word-count target.

Format the page for scanning and comparison
Shoppers should not have to dig through a long block of copy to find defining features. Use a brief opening, descriptive labels, short paragraphs, and bullets for specifications or included items. Put the most decision-relevant information near the beginning, while keeping detailed facts easy to locate.
When a shopper is choosing among variants or similar products, present the information needed to compare them consistently: intended use, key benefit, supporting feature, dimensions or fit, materials, care, included components, and meaningful limitations. Do not create a comparison claim unless the products and basis of comparison are clear.
For product feeds, platform formatting rules are a separate consideration from the length of a webpage description. Google Merchant Center says, “A rich PDP provides accurate and comprehensive product information.” Its recommendations concern product pages and product-data submissions; the guidance that descriptions exceed 200 characters applies to that feed context, not as a universal minimum for ecommerce copy. Google may use information from multiple sources and may not display every submitted field. See Google Merchant Center’s product-data specification for its platform guidance.
Use search terms naturally when they accurately name the product and match customer vocabulary. Keyword stuffing makes copy harder to read and can obscure the details that help a shopper decide.
Review claims and test page performance
Before publishing, read the description as a shopper with a real constraint: a size requirement, care concern, compatibility question, or intended use. Check whether the page answers what the product is, who it suits, how it is used, what it is made of, what is included, and what could make it unsuitable. Confirm every specification and claim against product documentation or other reliable evidence.
After publication, track a small set of relevant outcomes, such as conversion, cart abandonment, returns, customer-support inquiries, and organic search performance. Shopify recommends these as signals to monitor when improving descriptions. They do not prove that copy alone caused a change: price, images, inventory, traffic mix, promotions, and other page updates can affect the same measures. Where feasible, use a controlled test and avoid changing several major elements at once.
