The best About Me page tells one specific audience who you are, how you help them, and what they should do next. Open with your name, role, and reader-focused value; add a brief, relevant origin story; prove your expertise with concrete evidence; include one human detail; and finish with a single clear call to action.
What an About Me page should accomplish
An About Me page is a dedicated section of a website that introduces you to visitors. It is not a complete autobiography or a list of every job you have held. Its job is to help the right reader decide whether to trust you and take the next step.

Before writing, define that reader. A financial coach speaking to first-time budgeters needs different examples and language from a freelance accountant serving small businesses. The audience determines which experiences, results and personal details deserve space.
The six-part About Me page formula
1. Start with a reader-focused opening
Put your name, current role or specialty, and the outcome you help create in the first two sentences. A useful structure is:
#1 Best Overall
- E-mails, memos and letters that get read—and get action
- Proposals, recommendations, and presentations that sell ideas
- Plans and reports that get things done
- Fund-raising and sales letters that produce results
- Resumes and letters that lead to interviews
“I’m Name, a role who helps audience achieve specific outcome.”
Avoid opening with a vague claim such as “I am passionate about success.” Readers should immediately understand what you do for people like them.
2. Explain why you do this work
Give one short origin or turning-point story. Include only chronology that helps the reader understand your expertise, motivation or method. A relevant moment, problem you solved or lesson you learned is more persuasive than a complete résumé in paragraph form.

Choose two or three credible proof points, such as:
- a project and its measurable result;
- a relevant qualification, award or credential;
- clients or organizations you have served;
- a testimonial or media mention; or
- a portfolio sample that demonstrates your process.
Use only evidence you can substantiate. “Experts agree I am the best” is weaker than a linked case study, a named qualification or a specific result. Link to the underlying work where possible.
4. Add one human detail
A personal fact can make the page memorable, but it should support the impression you want to create. Mention a hobby, place, volunteer activity or working habit that reinforces a value or gives readers a natural conversation point. One relevant detail is usually enough.
5. State your values through behavior
If values matter to your work, show how they affect what you do. Instead of listing “integrity, clarity and empathy,” explain that you translate technical financial terms into plain language, disclose assumptions or give clients a written action plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. End with one obvious call to action
Choose the next action that matches the page’s purpose: contact you, review your portfolio, book a consultation, subscribe or read a selected resource. Make the destination and wording unmistakable. Multiple competing calls to action make it harder for a visitor to decide.
Rank #3
How long should an About Me page be?
Length should follow the platform and the reader’s decision. Indeed describes a typical portfolio website page as 150–300 words and a social profile as 50–120 words. The Balance describes a personal or professional website statement as commonly two to five paragraphs and says a longer version may run about 250–500 words.
| Platform | Typical length guidance | Emphasize | Primary action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portfolio website | About 150–300 words; longer pages can reach roughly 250–500 words when the story needs room | Selected projects, method and relevant proof | View work or contact you |
| Social profile | About 50–120 words | Role, value, specialty and one proof point | Message, connect or follow |
| Business website bio | Set by the site and audience; keep only decision-relevant detail | Service, credibility, organization and mission | Contact the business or request a service |
| Personal blog | As long as needed for context, while remaining scannable | Point of view, interests and selected experience | Read, subscribe or contact |
These are guidelines, not quotas. Cut any sentence that does not clarify whom you help, why you are credible or what a reader should do next.
First person or third person?
Use first person for a personal portfolio or blog when you are speaking directly to visitors. A business website, agency page or team bio often uses third person to maintain an organizational voice. Either can work; switching between “I” and “she,” “he” or “they” within one version feels accidental.

Keep the grammatical perspective consistent from the headline through the call to action. You can adapt the same facts for different platforms, but rewrite the emphasis and perspective rather than pasting identical copy everywhere.

Examples you can adapt
Portfolio version (first person, about 170 words)
“I’m Name, a role who helps audience achieve outcome. I started in origin, where I learned relevant lesson. Today I focus on specialty, combining skill with method. Recent work includes project/result and project/result. I care about value, which shows up in how I specific behavior. Browse portfolio link to see selected work, or single CTA.”
Social-profile version (about 70 words)
“I’m role helping audience with outcome. My work spans specialty/proof. I’m especially interested in focus. Message me about next step.”
Business-style third-person version
“Name is a role who helps audience outcome. After origin or credential, Name now focuses on specialty. Their work includes proof. Learn more at link or CTA.”
Illustrative personal-finance example
“I’m Maya Chen, a financial educator who helps early-career professionals build a workable spending plan and understand their workplace benefits. After struggling to compare my own first benefits package, I began translating dense plan documents into plain-language checklists. Today I focus on budgeting systems, emergency-fund planning and benefits education. My guides include a paycheck-planning worksheet and a benefits comparison tutorial. I value clarity, so every recommendation shows its assumptions and next steps. Read the starter guide or send me your question.”

Good copy can be undermined by a confusing page. Use a clear visual hierarchy: a descriptive heading, short paragraphs, informative subheads and generous white space. Keep colors, typography and imagery consistent with the rest of the site, and test the page on a phone.
- Use a current, authentic photo when it is appropriate for your work; add a caption if context helps.
- Link to work samples, credentials or testimonials rather than making unsupported claims.
- Use natural terms your audience actually searches for, without stuffing keywords.
- Make contact details and destination links easy to find.
- Review the page whenever your role, offer, achievements or contact route changes.
Indeed reports that job seekers with detailed, up-to-date profiles were 4.5 times more likely to be contacted by an employer searching for candidates. That figure is based on US data from December 2025 through January 2026; it is an employer-search statistic, not a guarantee that any particular About Me page will produce contact.

Editing checklist before you publish
- Can the target reader identify who you are and what you offer in the first two sentences?
- Does every credential, client reference and result have a concrete basis?
- Is the origin story relevant to the reader’s decision?
- Have you used one grammatical perspective consistently?
- Is there exactly one prominent, useful call to action?
- Does the length fit the platform and the reader’s attention?
- Are the photo, links and contact details current?
- Does the page sound like a person rather than a collection of slogans?
