How to Withdraw Money from EPF Online: Eligibility, Forms and Steps

Use Form 19 for eligible EPF final settlement, Form 10C for an EPS benefit or certificate, and Form 31 for eligible advances. Check current portal eligibility because 2025 reforms differ from older FAQ waiting periods.

To withdraw money from an EPF account online, sign in to the official EPFO member portal and submit the claim type that matches your need: Form 19 for final EPF settlement, Form 10C for an eligible EPS withdrawal benefit or scheme certificate, or Form 31 for an eligible partial withdrawal or advance. First check which forms your account can claim and whether your exit, service, Aadhaar and bank details meet the rules currently applied in the portal. EPFO’s older online-claim FAQ and its October 2025 reform announcements describe different waiting periods, so the FAQ’s older timelines should not be treated as a guarantee of current eligibility.

Choose the right EPF claim form

EPF and EPS are related but distinct parts of the retirement-benefit system. A claim against the EPF balance is not the same as an EPS pension-scheme claim. The form you need depends on whether you have left covered employment, want to access only an eligible portion of your EPF balance, or are moving an account to a new employer. EPFO lists Forms 19, 10C, 31 and 13 for these different purposes in its schemes and claim forms information.

Your need Form What it does Key distinction
Claim the EPF balance after leaving covered employment, when eligible Form 19 EPF final settlement Check your recorded exit date, current employment status, applicable waiting rule and tax circumstances.
Claim an eligible pension-scheme withdrawal benefit or request a scheme certificate Form 10C EPS benefit or certificate This concerns EPS, not the EPF account balance.
Access an eligible part of the EPF balance while the account remains subject to scheme rules Form 31 Partial withdrawal or advance The reason, permitted amount, service condition and withdrawal limits depend on the applicable rules.
Move an old PF account to another account Form 13 Transfer claim A transfer moves the balance; it is not a withdrawal.

Do not choose a form only because its name sounds familiar. In particular, a person seeking a pension-scheme benefit should not assume Form 19 covers it, and a person changing jobs should not mistake a transfer for cash withdrawal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful way to decide is to start with the outcome you want, not the amount. If you have left covered employment and want the eligible EPF balance paid out, check Form 19. If your question concerns an EPS benefit or certificate, check Form 10C separately; approval or eligibility for one claim should not be treated as approval for the other. If you remain subject to the scheme and need money for a qualifying purpose, check whether Form 31 is available. If you have changed employers and want to preserve the account in the new employment, Form 13 is the transfer route rather than a cash claim.

Check eligibility before you start

Eligibility depends on the claim type and the facts recorded in your EPFO account. The EPFO online-claim FAQ sets out legacy requirements and waiting periods. Separately, EPFO and the Ministry of Labour & Employment announced changes in October 2025, including different waiting periods and simplified partial-withdrawal provisions. The announcements describe reforms but do not establish that every change is implemented for every account or available in every portal menu. Treat the live claim options and current applicable rules as decisive; do not assume the older FAQ’s timelines still govern your account.

Account and identity prerequisites

EPFO’s online-claim FAQ says members need an activated UAN and access to the mobile number used to activate it. Aadhaar must be seeded in EPFO records for OTP-based e-KYC, and the bank account and IFSC must also be seeded. The FAQ additionally says PAN should be seeded for a Form 19 claim when service is under five years. These are the FAQ’s stated online-claim prerequisites; if the portal’s live requirements differ, follow the current portal instructions and EPFO guidance.

  • Confirm that your UAN is activated and that you can access the registered mobile for verification.
  • Check that your Aadhaar and bank account details appear correctly in EPFO records.
  • For a short-service Form 19 claim, check whether PAN is seeded as the FAQ specifies.
  • Review your service history and exit information before submitting a claim that depends on them.

The claim interface includes Aadhaar-based authentication consent. Read the consent before proceeding, and never give your password or one-time password to an agent or other intermediary. The EPFO claim-interface consent page is an example of the authentication language used by the portal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make the checks before beginning the online claim rather than waiting for an error at submission. The portal relies on the details held in EPFO records; information that looks correct on a payslip or bank app may still need to be checked against the EPFO account. If you cannot access the registered mobile, or a seeded detail is incorrect, resolve that issue through official EPFO routes first. Do not send identity documents, bank details, passwords or OTPs to an unofficial helper who offers to “unlock” a claim.

Exit date, current employment and service rules

For Form 19, the older FAQ says the Date of Joining and Date of Exit should be available in EPFO records, the member should not currently be employed by an establishment covered by the PF Act, and the member should not file before two months after leaving. That two-month wait is legacy FAQ wording, not a safe statement of the current rule: October 2025 official releases describe extending the premature final EPF settlement period from two months to 12 months.

For Form 10C, the same older FAQ describes total service above six months and below 9.5 years, alongside its Form 19 conditions. EPFO’s October 2025 press brief describes extending the period for final pension withdrawal from two years to 36 months. Because the older FAQ and later reform announcements differ, do not rely on either time period alone to decide eligibility; check the current rule and the form options shown for your member account.

The official sources reviewed describe reforms and announced policy parameters, not a definitive account-by-account implementation date. The EPFO/CBT press brief of 13 October 2025 and the Ministry’s 15 October 2025 reform clarification are useful context, but they do not replace checking the rules applicable to your claim today.

These differences matter when planning a claim. For example, someone who left a job recently should not assume the older two-month period means Form 19 is available as soon as that interval passes: the later announcement describes a 12-month premature-settlement period. Likewise, a member considering an EPS withdrawal should not treat the FAQ’s service range or the announced 36-month period as sufficient by itself. The claim type, service record, exit information and current rules all need to line up. If the portal does not offer the form, do not try to work around the restriction by selecting a different form; confirm the underlying eligibility instead.

What the October 2025 partial-withdrawal reforms describe

The October 2025 releases describe a more consolidated framework for eligible partial withdrawals. The CBT press brief says the decision set a uniform minimum service rule of 12 months, allowed withdrawals for education up to 10 times and marriage up to five times, retained a minimum 25% balance in the member’s account, and removed documentation for the simplified partial-withdrawal process. The Ministry’s 15 October clarification says 13 categories were consolidated into three, describes 75% of the eligible amount as withdrawable, and says full withdrawal is possible in special situations.

These figures describe the announced reform, not a promise that every member can withdraw a given percentage or make the maximum number of claims. The eligible amount, reason, service, retained balance and any special-situation conditions still matter. Confirm that the relevant rule is in effect for your case and that Form 31 is offered in the member portal before relying on these parameters.

Announced parameter What the official 2025 material says How to use it
12 months Uniform minimum service for partial withdrawals; separately, a 12-month period for premature final EPF settlement is described. These are two distinct announced rules; do not conflate partial-withdrawal service with final-settlement timing.
36 months Period described for final EPS pension withdrawal. Check current implementation and eligibility for the specific EPS claim.
25% Minimum balance described as retained in the member’s account under the partial-withdrawal reform. The amount available is not necessarily the entire balance.
75% The Ministry’s clarification describes this portion of the eligible amount as withdrawable. It is an announced policy parameter, not a universal entitlement to 75% of every account balance.
Up to 10 education withdrawals; up to 5 marriage withdrawals Limits described in the CBT press brief. Confirm the qualifying reason and current rules before filing.

The Ministry characterized the change as: “Thirteen complex provisions merged into three categories, ensuring faster, simpler and more transparent withdrawals.” That is the Ministry’s description of the reform, not a guarantee about an individual claim’s processing time or outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a partial claim, distinguish the permitted purpose from the amount you hope to receive. The 75% figure refers to the eligible amount as described by the Ministry, while the 25% retained-balance parameter means the account is not necessarily emptied through a routine partial withdrawal. The published limits for education and marriage are maximum occasions described in the CBT brief, not instructions to submit a claim for any education or marriage expense without checking the applicable qualifying conditions. The releases also mention full withdrawal in special situations but do not define every situation in a way that can establish an individual member’s entitlement here.

How to file an EPF claim online

  1. Open the official member portal. Go to the EPFO Member Home and sign in with your UAN credentials. EPFO also indicates that UAN activation or generation can be done through UMANG; follow the official route if you cannot sign in.
  2. Check your records first. Confirm the UAN, Aadhaar-based verification, registered mobile, bank details and service information match the records held by EPFO. For a final settlement, pay particular attention to the Date of Joining and Date of Exit.
  3. Open the claim area and select the applicable form. Choose Form 19 for a final EPF settlement, Form 10C for an eligible EPS withdrawal benefit or scheme certificate, or Form 31 for an eligible partial withdrawal or advance. The portal’s precise screen labels can change; select only a claim type actually offered for your account.
  4. Complete the requested information and authentication. Follow the live portal prompts and review any Aadhaar-based consent before authorizing the claim. Do not share your login details or OTP with another person.
  5. Submit and save the acknowledgement. Keep the acknowledgement or reference number so you can check the claim later. EPFO’s official member interface and For Employees information are the appropriate starting points for claim and employee guidance.
  6. Track the claim through official channels. Use the status or support routes provided by EPFO. Do not assume a fixed processing time: EPFO has acknowledged technical interruptions and portal service changes, and availability and processing can vary.

This is an operational outline, not a promise of stable button-by-button instructions. The official material establishes the member portal and claim forms, but portal screens may change. If you cannot find the claim option, use EPFO’s employee information and official support rather than paying an unofficial service to submit it.

Before pressing submit, pause to check that the claim is for the correct benefit and that the bank details displayed or confirmed in the process are the ones you intend to use. Read the claim summary and any declarations on screen. Save the acknowledgement after successful submission, and keep it with the date and form type for follow-up. If the portal times out or shows an error, verify whether the claim was actually submitted before starting again, so you do not create avoidable duplicate attempts.

If a form is missing or your claim fails

A missing claim option can reflect a mismatch between the claim you chose and your account’s recorded details, an unmet eligibility condition, or rules not yet reflected as available for your account. Work through the underlying records before repeatedly submitting the same claim.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the exit record. If Form 19 is unavailable, verify that the Date of Exit is recorded correctly and that your current employment status meets the conditions applicable to final settlement.
  • Check identity and bank details. Confirm Aadhaar and bank account/IFSC information are seeded correctly and that you can complete the portal’s authentication.
  • Match the form to the benefit. Use Form 19 for EPF final settlement, Form 10C for the eligible EPS benefit or certificate, and Form 31 for an eligible advance. Use Form 13 to transfer an account, not withdraw it.
  • Recheck current eligibility. The older FAQ’s service and waiting wording differs from the later 2025 announcements. Consult current EPFO rules and the live portal rather than treating legacy FAQ timelines as conclusive.
  • Use official assistance. EPFO’s employee page points members to official FAQs and claim-form information. Keep your acknowledgement number and use EPFO support channels for follow-up.

Avoid common errors that can waste time: applying for final settlement when the need is a transfer, using Form 19 for an EPS benefit, or choosing Form 31 without confirming the reason and amount qualify. A claim may also be blocked if an essential account detail is missing or inconsistent. Correct the record or clarify the rule through EPFO’s official information before trying another claim type. The claim process is online through the official interface; the official information cited here does not show a generic device, scanner, paid intermediary or third-party guide as a requirement.

Tax and timing: what to verify

An EPF withdrawal may have tax or tax-deduction-at-source consequences depending on the member’s individual circumstances and the rules in force. EPFO’s April–June 2025 newsletter discusses EPF income-tax provisions, TDS and Forms 15G/15H. Do not assume a withdrawal is tax-free, or submit Form 15G or Form 15H unless you actually qualify. For a specific tax outcome, consult current tax guidance or a qualified Indian tax professional.

Do not plan around an assumed payment date. The official material cited here does not establish a fixed processing time, and portal availability or processing can vary. Save the claim reference and rely on the status given through EPFO’s official channels rather than an unofficial estimate.

Tax treatment is separate from the question of whether a form appears in your account. An eligible claim does not by itself settle your personal tax position, and the presence of a tax declaration form does not mean every member should file it. If your service history is short, you have multiple employment periods, or you are unsure whether TDS applies, check the current tax rules for your circumstances instead of relying on a blanket statement about all EPF withdrawals.

The older EPFO online-claim FAQ says not to file Form 19 before two months after leaving.
