In the United States, the simplest way to get cash without an ATM is often to request cash back during a purchase with an eligible debit or prepaid card at a participating retailer. Check the amount, any purchase requirement and any fee before approving the transaction. A post office or bank teller may be another option; some credit cards also offer checkout cash, but issuer terms and interest charges matter.
Choose the option that fits your card and situation
“No nearby ATM” can mean several different things. You may have a debit card but be far from an ATM, have a phone but not the physical card, need only a small amount, or be willing to visit a branch but not make a purchase. The best alternative depends on which card or account you have, whether a purchase is acceptable, the amount you need and whether the provider serves noncustomers.

| Option | Card or account needed | Purchase required? | Costs and limits | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retailer cash back | Eligible debit or prepaid card, usually with PIN authentication (CFPB) | Yes | Retailer rules determine any fee, minimum purchase and cash limit; check before approving (CFPB; Chime) | Participating retailers only; policies vary by store |
| Post-office debit cash back | Debit card accepted for the transaction (CFPB) | A debit transaction is required | CFPB reports $10 increments up to $50, without charge; confirm availability at the location | US option; location-level availability is not established by the CFPB report |
| Bank teller | Ask the bank what account or card eligibility applies | No purchase is described as necessary | Fees and identification requirements depend on the bank and location (CFPB) | Whether a branch serves noncustomers varies |
| Credit-card cash at checkout | Eligible Discover card at a participating store (Discover) | Yes | Discover states up to $120 every 24 hours and no transaction, ATM or bank fee for the feature; the standard purchase APR applies to cash received. Store limits may differ. | Issuer- and merchant-specific |
| Cardless ATM | Eligible debit card loaded in a supported mobile wallet (Chase) | No purchase, but an ATM is required | Limits and fees are not stated here; check the account and ATM terms | Select Chase ATMs, not a solution when no ATM is nearby |
These are US-focused options, not guarantees of service at every location. Retailer participation, branch policies and issuer terms can vary, and the specific availability of a cash service may depend on the card you use. Treat the table as a way to narrow your choices, then verify the details with the store, branch or issuer before committing to a transaction.
Get cash back at a participating store
At some stores, a qualifying debit or prepaid-card purchase lets you request cash as part of the payment. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes retail point-of-sale cash withdrawals as using a PIN-authenticated debit or prepaid card. The purchase and cash withdrawal are handled in the same checkout transaction, so this is not the same as taking cash out of an ATM.

Before you pay
- Ask whether the store offers cash back with your type of card. Do not assume a retailer, checkout lane or card supports it. Participation can differ between stores or terminals.
- Ask how much cash you may request and whether a purchase minimum applies. The retailer can set an amount limit, and some stores allow only certain increments or amounts.
- Check the terminal or ask the cashier about any fee. A card issuer may advertise no point-of-sale cash-back fee while the retailer still charges its own fee.
- Enter or select the cash-back amount and review the complete total. Make sure the screen shows the merchandise, the cash and any separate fee before authorizing the payment.
- Enter your PIN if prompted. The CFPB description specifically concerns PIN-authenticated debit or prepaid transactions; a signature or unsupported card route may not qualify.
- Keep the receipt and check that the purchase and cash amounts match what you approved.
Chime provides a useful example of why the retailer and issuer rules both matter. Chime says its issuer does not charge a point-of-sale cash-back fee, but warns that a retailer may charge a fee, require a minimum purchase or limit the amount. That statement applies to Chime’s terms, not to every debit or prepaid card. Your own issuer may have different eligibility or fees.
When store cash back makes sense
Retail cash back is convenient when you are already buying something at a participating shop. It can avoid a separate trip to an ATM and may be available at a supermarket, pharmacy or other retailer that accepts your card. The service is not universal, however, and a cashier may not know every card’s rules. Ask before you put items on the belt or before the terminal reaches the final approval screen.
It is less attractive if you would buy something solely to obtain cash. A minimum purchase means you must spend that amount even if you do not need the goods, and a store fee increases the cost of obtaining cash. Compare the total cost with another available method. If the terminal reveals a fee or a limit that does not work for you, cancel before approval and try another option rather than assuming the terms can be changed afterward.

- Does this location offer cash back for my debit or prepaid card?
- Do I need to use a PIN?
- What is the minimum purchase and maximum cash amount?
- Is there a cash-back fee, and where will it appear on the screen or receipt?
- Can I request the exact amount I need, or only preset amounts?
The retailer determines much of this experience. Even if your issuer allows cash back, the store can decline the request, set a different limit or charge a fee. Confirm the terms at the specific checkout you plan to use.
Ask whether a post office offers debit cash back
The CFPB reports that the US Postal Service offers cash back on debit transactions in $10 increments, up to $50, without charge. This can be useful for a modest cash need when a participating postal location is closer than an ATM.
Treat the report as a possible option rather than a promise about every post office or every card. The report does not establish location-by-location availability, and it does not confirm that a particular debit card will work. Before relying on the service, ask at the location whether debit cash back is currently available and whether it accepts your card.

The amount structure matters. Requests are reported in $10 increments, so the option may not fit an amount such as $15 or $25 if the location requires a different increment. The reported ceiling is $50, so someone needing more must use another method or make a separate plan. Do not assume that “without charge” means every related service is free; it describes the reported debit cash-back option, while your card’s ordinary account terms can still govern the transaction.
Ask a bank branch about a teller withdrawal
A bank teller is another documented way to access cash when an ATM is unavailable. Unlike retail cash back, a purchase is not described as necessary. The practical question is whether the branch will serve you and what proof it requires.
Call or ask the branch before making the trip. Explain whether you are the bank’s customer and what card or account you have. Ask whether the teller can process the withdrawal, what identification to bring and whether a fee applies. Branch policy can differ by bank and location, and a branch is not required to provide cash to a noncustomer merely because it is nearby.
If you are a customer, ask whether the branch needs your debit card, account details or another form of identification. If you are not a customer, ask directly whether noncustomers are served and what payment instrument, identification and fee would apply. Do not travel on the assumption that a teller will honor the request; confirmation beforehand can prevent a wasted trip.
Check the terms before using credit-card checkout cash
Some eligible credit cards offer cash at checkout at participating stores. This is issuer-specific, not a general credit-card feature, and it should not be confused with a debit-card cash-back transaction.
Discover documents a cash-at-checkout option of up to $120 every 24 hours. Discover says the feature has no transaction, ATM or bank fee, but its standard purchase annual percentage rate (APR) applies to the cash received. Participating stores may set different limits, so the issuer’s stated maximum is not a guarantee that a particular checkout will provide $120.

Before proceeding, confirm that your specific card and the store support the feature, ask how much the store will allow and review the APR and other issuer terms. “No transaction, ATM or bank fee” does not mean the cash is interest-free. The purchase APR can make the cash more expensive over time, so consider when you can repay the balance. For any other credit card, check its own agreement; Discover’s eligibility, limit and pricing do not transfer to another issuer.
Credit-card checkout cash can be a fallback when no debit or prepaid card is available, but the interest consequence makes it different from many debit cash-back transactions. Compare the amount you need with the daily limit, store limit and repayment cost before authorizing it.
Understand what the cash-access figures do—and do not—show
In a 2024 analysis, the CFPB reported that retail point-of-sale withdrawals accounted for 17% of the analyzed ways people obtained cash from checking accounts, savings accounts or prepaid cards. In the same combined 2017–2022 data, ATMs accounted for 61%, bank tellers for 14% and other methods for 8%.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe percentages describe the combined period from 2017 through 2022; they are not a current snapshot and do not predict what a particular retailer will offer today. They show that retail withdrawals were an established cash-access channel alongside ATMs and tellers, not that every consumer or every card can use store cash back.
Fees also vary. A CFPB sample from 2024 found that some national retail chains charged cash-back fees while others did not. That sample is not a current fee schedule: retailer policies may have changed, and a chain’s policy may not be identical at every location. Check the terminal or ask the cashier at the time of the transaction.
Compare each option before choosing
Use six questions to compare the methods:
- Is your card or account eligible? Retail cash back generally concerns a PIN-authenticated debit or prepaid card; Discover checkout cash concerns an eligible Discover card; a teller decides what account or card it can serve.
- Must you make a purchase? Retail and credit-card checkout cash are tied to a purchase. A teller withdrawal is not described as requiring one. Post-office cash back requires a debit transaction.
- What is the full cost? Ask about retailer fees, branch fees and any credit-card interest. A feature advertised as fee-free by an issuer can still be subject to a retailer’s fee, while an APR can apply even when no transaction fee is charged.
- How much can you withdraw? Retailers set their own limits; the reported post-office service uses $10 increments up to $50; Discover states up to $120 every 24 hours, subject to store limits.
- Is the service actually nearby and available? A participating retailer or post office may be closer than an ATM, but availability must be checked at the location. Cardless ATM access still requires reaching a supported ATM.
- Will the provider serve you? A bank branch may have different rules for customers and noncustomers, including identification and fees.
This comparison prevents a common mistake: choosing a method based only on distance. The closest location may not accept your card, may impose a minimum purchase or may charge more than another option a little farther away.

Do not confuse cardless ATM access with cash access away from ATMs
Cardless access can help if you have your phone or smartwatch but not your physical debit card. Chase says eligible debit cards loaded into supported mobile wallets can be used at select Chase ATMs by tapping the device and entering the card PIN.
This still requires an ATM location, so it solves a missing-card problem rather than a no-nearby-ATM problem. It may be worth checking if a supported Chase ATM is reachable, but it does not turn a store or branch into an ATM and does not remove the need to follow the account’s PIN, limit and fee terms.
A quick decision path
- You have an eligible debit or prepaid card and are already shopping: ask whether the retailer offers cash back and check the fee, minimum purchase, PIN requirement and amount limit before approving.
- You have a debit card and are near a post office: ask whether that location offers debit cash back and whether it accepts your card. The CFPB-reported amounts are $10 increments up to $50 without charge, but local availability is not guaranteed.
- You are near a bank branch: call ahead to confirm whether it can serve you, especially if you are a noncustomer. Ask what identification is required and whether a fee applies.
- You have an eligible Discover card: ask whether the store supports cash at checkout, check the store’s limit and remember Discover’s documented maximum is $120 every 24 hours with the standard purchase APR applying.
- You have another credit card: consult that issuer’s terms. Do not assume another card offers Discover’s feature or pricing.
- You have a phone but not your debit card: cardless access at a supported Chase ATM may help, but it will not remove the need to reach an ATM.
- You need more than the available limit: do not split a transaction or assume a second request will be approved. Ask the provider what its limit is and select a different channel if the amount cannot be supplied.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming every store offers cash back: participation is retailer- and location-specific.
- Looking only at the issuer’s fee: the retailer can add its own fee, minimum purchase or amount limit.
- Skipping the final-screen review: confirm the cash amount, purchase total and fee before authorizing.
- Treating a historical percentage as today’s availability: the CFPB figures summarize 2017–2022 data analyzed in 2024; they do not identify a participating store.
- Assuming a post office always provides cash: verify the location and card acceptance first.
- Assuming a teller serves noncustomers: branch policy, identification and fees vary.
- Calling credit-card checkout cash free: Discover reports no feature, ATM or bank fee, but its standard purchase APR applies.
- Confusing cardless with ATM-free: a mobile wallet can replace the physical card at select ATMs, not the ATM itself.
Scope and local verification
The specific services and figures here are US-focused. Cash-back arrangements, postal services, card acceptance and fees differ internationally, so readers outside the United States should check local providers and card rules rather than assume these US arrangements apply.
Retailer policies and issuer terms can change. Verify the service, amount, fee, purchase requirement, PIN requirement and acceptance with the store, post office, branch or card issuer at the point of use. That final check is especially important when you are relying on a noncustomer teller withdrawal, a $50 post-office ceiling or a credit-card APR.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get cash back at a store without an ATM?
Often, yes. Participating retailers may let you request cash during a qualifying purchase with an eligible debit or prepaid card, usually using a PIN. Ask about participation, the minimum purchase, amount limit and fee before approving the transaction.
Can I get cash at a post office?
The CFPB reports that the US Postal Service offers debit cash back in $10 increments up to $50 without charge. Availability is not established for every location, so ask the post office whether the service and your card are accepted.

Can a bank give me cash if I am not a customer?
Possibly, but do not assume it. A branch decides whether it serves noncustomers, what identification is required and whether a fee applies. Call or ask before traveling to the branch.
Does store cash back always have a fee?
No. Fees vary by retailer and location. An issuer may charge no point-of-sale cash-back fee while the retailer imposes its own fee, minimum purchase or cash limit. Check the terminal or ask the cashier.
How much cash can I get with Discover cash at checkout?
Discover documents up to $120 every 24 hours at participating stores, although a store may set a different limit. Discover says there is no transaction, ATM or bank fee for the feature, but the standard purchase APR applies to the cash received.

Is cardless ATM access an alternative when no ATM is nearby?
No. Cardless access can let an eligible debit card in a supported mobile wallet work at select Chase ATMs, but you still have to reach an ATM. It solves a missing-physical-card problem, not a lack-of-ATM problem.
Are the CFPB’s cash-access percentages current?
They are historical combined-period figures. The CFPB’s 2024 analysis reported 17% retail point-of-sale withdrawals, 61% ATM withdrawals, 14% teller withdrawals and 8% other methods for data combined from 2017 through 2022. They do not show current availability at a particular location.
The Bottom Line
When no ATM is nearby, first ask a participating retailer whether your debit or prepaid card supports PIN-based cash back and confirm the fee, minimum purchase and limit before paying. A post office may offer debit cash back in $10 increments up to $50, a bank teller may help after you confirm branch policy, and an eligible Discover card may provide checkout cash up to $120 every 24 hours—but interest can apply. Verify the exact terms and availability at the point of use.
