How to Verify a Layer 2 Withdrawal Using a Block Explorer

A successful Layer 2 transaction does not always mean a withdrawal is complete. Follow the initiating hash through the bridge stages and verify any required destination-chain transaction.

To verify a Layer 2 (L2) withdrawal, start with the transaction hash on the L2 where you initiated it, then follow the bridge’s status and check any required proof, claim, or finalization transaction on the destination chain. A successful L2 transaction confirms that the withdrawal was included on that network; it does not necessarily mean the funds have arrived on L1.

What you need before checking

Gather the initiating transaction hash and confirm the details of the withdrawal you intended to make:

  • The source L2 and destination network.
  • The token and amount.
  • The recipient address on the destination chain.

Do not infer the destination network from a token symbol. The same symbol can be used on different networks, and bridge procedures vary.

Verify the withdrawal, stage by stage

  1. Open the source L2 explorer. Search for the hash of the transaction that initiated the withdrawal. Confirm the explorer is for the correct L2 and inspect the transaction receipt or result. Check the sender, bridge or target contract, token or value, and timestamp. The explorer can establish whether the transaction succeeded on that chain, but not necessarily whether the cross-chain transfer is complete. See the OP Stack withdrawal specification and ZKsync withdrawal documentation.
  2. Look up the bridge message. If the bridge provides transaction history or a message-status tool, search using the initiating L2 hash. For Arbitrum withdrawals from L2 to L1, its official FAQ specifies using the L2 transaction hash; bridge transaction history shows message progress and can also be used to claim withdrawals.
  3. Check for any required destination-chain steps. Search the destination L1 explorer for transactions associated with proving, finalizing, or claiming the withdrawal. Inspect their receipts and any resulting transfer or event. Confirm that the recipient and asset match your original request. The exact steps depend on the network.
  4. Confirm the destination outcome. Where the bridge process requires an L1 finalization or claim, find that transaction and verify it succeeded. Check the resulting asset movement or event and confirm the destination address. A source-chain success alone is not a destination-side completion check.

How withdrawal stages differ by network

Network or flow Starting lookup What to follow Timing qualification
OP Stack networks The L2 withdrawal initiation transaction. The documented flow separates initiation on L2, proving on L1, and finalizing on L1. The OP Stack specification describes a seven-day challenge period after proving before finalization is eligible. Check the specific network’s current bridge instructions; do not treat this protocol timing as universal across L2s.
Arbitrum, L2 to L1 The initiating L2 transaction hash. Search the official bridge transaction history for the cross-chain message and any claim step. The cited FAQ does not establish a universal withdrawal duration.
ZKsync The L2 withdrawal request transaction. The request must be executed before the user finalizes it on L1 with a withdrawal proof. Execution delay and finalization timing depend on network activity and proof generation; the documentation does not establish one fixed duration for every withdrawal.

These flows illustrate why an explorer page for one transaction may not show the entire withdrawal. Transaction and receipt data can show what happened on a chain; bridge histories can track the associated cross-chain message. For explorer receipt and transaction-status concepts, see the Ethereum JSON-RPC documentation.

Why a withdrawal may not appear on Etherscan

If you cannot find the expected transfer on Etherscan, check these possibilities in order:

  • Wrong destination explorer or address: Confirm the destination network and the exact recipient address from the original withdrawal.
  • The L2 transaction reverted: A failed source transaction will not complete the intended withdrawal. Check its receipt on the source L2 explorer.
  • The bridge is still processing: Check the bridge message history for a pending stage, rather than relying only on the source transaction page.
  • A network-specific step is still required: The withdrawal may be waiting for execution, proof, finalization, or a claim, depending on the bridge.
  • Destination-side activity has not yet appeared: ZKsync’s documentation identifies confirmation delay, reverted transactions, and an incorrect destination address among reasons a withdrawal may not show on Etherscan.

Use the network’s current official bridge instructions to interpret labels such as “included,” “proven,” “ready to finalize,” or “finalized.” They describe different stages in some flows, and labels are not necessarily shared across networks.

When to treat the withdrawal as complete

For a withdrawal that requires a destination-side proof, claim, or finalization, look for the successful destination transaction and verify the resulting transfer or event against the intended recipient and asset. If the bridge’s official status still shows a pending stage, an L2 success receipt alone is not evidence that the L1 withdrawal has finished.
