Open the portal yourself, enter the document’s Reference Number (RFN), then compare the portal’s result with the document you received—especially its type, issuing officer, and purpose. GSTN says the service is available both before and after login. If the result is missing or does not match, treat the notice as unverified and confirm it through official contact channels you find independently.
Verify the notice with GST Portal’s Verify RFN service
GSTN identifies Verify RFN as the official way to check communications issued through the GST system. You can reach it without logging in at https://services.gst.gov.in/services/verifyRfn, or use the logged-in dashboard route below. GSTN’s advisory dated 25 September 2024 says system communications can be verified pre-login and explains that the check can identify the communication and its issuing officer.

The RFN is the Reference Number associated with the purported notice or order. The point of checking it is not simply to see whether a sequence of characters looks plausible: use the official service and compare what it returns with the document in front of you. In particular, check that the reference number, document type, issue details, issuing officer, and stated purpose correspond. A familiar logo, formal wording, or convincing sender name is not a substitute for that comparison.
Before login
- Type
gst.gov.ininto your browser or use a trusted bookmark. Do not open a link in an unexpected email, SMS, or messaging-app notification. Starting independently helps avoid being sent to a lookalike page by a message that is itself under investigation. - Open the Verify RFN service at https://services.gst.gov.in/services/verifyRfn. If you use the direct address, check that you are on the GST Portal’s official domain before entering information.
- Enter the RFN shown on the notice or order and submit it. Copy it carefully from the document; if the result is absent, check the number again before drawing a conclusion.
- Compare the returned information and document with the copy you received: check the RFN, document type, issuing officer, issue details, and stated purpose. Do not stop at a result that merely looks like a record—confirm that it is the same communication you received.
- Keep a note of the date you checked and what the service returned. If there is a discrepancy, this makes it easier to describe the issue when you contact an authority through official channels.
After login
- Open the GST Portal independently and sign in through its official login page. Do not use credentials on a page reached through a suspicious message link.
- Go to Dashboard > Services > User Services > Verify RFN. This is the post-login route stated in GSTN’s advisory.
- Enter the RFN and compare the returned record with the communication in your possession. Check the same details you would check in the pre-login service: reference number, document type, issue details, issuer, and purpose.
The pre-login and post-login routes lead to the same notice-verification function. Choose the public route if you do not need to sign in; use the dashboard route if you are already logged in or prefer to reach the service from your account. Neither route makes a message link safe: start from the official portal rather than a link supplied with the purported notice. You do not need to choose a third-party invoice app as an alternative; those tools are not equivalent to the notice-specific Verify RFN check.

What a successful RFN check confirms—and what it does not
A matching result is the official route GSTN identifies for checking a system communication’s validity and identifying who issued it and for what purpose. The document, officer, and purpose shown in the portal should correspond to what you received. This is the crucial comparison: a result relating to a different communication, issuer, or purpose does not authenticate the file or message you were sent.
A successful check is an authenticity check, not a ruling on the notice’s legal merits. It does not establish that every allegation is correct, explain the legal consequences, or tell you what response to file. It also does not remove the need to read the notice carefully. If the communication verifies, note its stated deadline and requirements and decide what advice you need about its substance. If you are unsure how to understand or answer it, seek advice from a qualified chartered accountant, GST practitioner, or tax lawyer. GSTN’s verification service does not endorse an adviser or provide a substitute for professional advice.
Likewise, an unsuccessful or inconsistent result should be handled as unresolved rather than as a definitive legal finding about the document. GSTN’s published guidance does not establish that every missing result means forgery or explain why a particular reference might not be returned. Recheck the RFN, preserve the document and message, and use contact details obtained independently from official GSTN or tax-department sources to seek confirmation. Until you have independently confirmed it, do not pay or disclose sensitive information solely because the message pressures you to act quickly.

Does a GST notice need a visible digital signature?
Not necessarily. A PDF without a visible digital signature is not, by itself, proof that a notice or order is fake. In its 25 September 2024 advisory, GSTN explains that certain system-generated notices and orders downloaded from the common portal may not show the officer’s digital signature. The advisory says the officer logs in using a digital signature, initiates the document through the portal, and the system stores the document and issuing-officer details.
That is a limited explanation about the portal-generated communications covered by the advisory. It does not establish that every unsigned file is genuine, and it is not a reason to ignore a mismatch or skip verification. Use Verify RFN to check the particular communication rather than relying on the appearance of a PDF. A visible signature, if present, should not replace the RFN check either: GSTN’s stated route is to verify the document and its details in the portal.

GSTN’s advisory states: “All communications from the officers to the taxpayer/ any other person initiated through the system can also be verified pre-login through the link https://services.gst.gov.in/services/verifyRfn .” (Team GSTN, advisory dated 25 September 2024.) The useful takeaway is the verification route, not a blanket assurance about every document that appears official or lacks a signature.
Use Search Taxpayer only as a separate identity check
The GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer lookup can help corroborate a GSTIN or UIN. GSTN’s user guide says the lookup is available before login and can display details such as the legal and trade names, registration status, effective date, principal place of business, and return-filing information. This can help you check whether the taxpayer identity associated with a communication is consistent with the registration information shown by the portal.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This lookup checks taxpayer registration information; it does not authenticate a specific notice. A matching GSTIN or business name cannot replace the notice-specific RFN check. Search Taxpayer answers a different question—whether the GSTIN or UIN is associated with the taxpayer details displayed by that lookup—not whether the particular notice was issued through the system by the officer and for the purpose stated in the document.
Use the two checks for their separate purposes. If you need to corroborate an identity, use Search Taxpayer through the GST Portal. If you need to verify a notice or order, use Verify RFN and compare its returned details. A taxpayer lookup result that appears consistent does not cure a missing RFN or an issuer or purpose mismatch.
Warning signs that mean pause and verify
A suspicious feature is a reason to stop and check independently, not conclusive proof that a notice is fake. GSTN warns users about suspicious-looking emails and unknown URLs, and says government departments or officials will not ask for account credentials or OTP details. Treat those warnings as practical safeguards: do not let urgency in an unexpected message push you into opening an unknown link or handing over account access.

- A message urges you to follow an unfamiliar link instead of independently opening the GST Portal.
- Someone who contacted you unexpectedly asks for your password, OTP, or provisional credentials. Do not provide them.
- A communication pressures you to pay through an unfamiliar account or disclose sensitive information before you can verify it. Pause and confirm through the portal and independently obtained official contact channels.
- The RFN is missing, the portal cannot confirm it, or the returned issuer, document type, issue details, or purpose does not match the notice. Treat the result as unresolved and seek independent confirmation.
These are reasons to verify, not an official exhaustive checklist of fake GST notices. GSTN’s published guidance does not identify a complete list of fraud indicators or a statistic for how often notices are fake. Visual design, a logo, a sender display name, polished language, or the presence or absence of a visible signature is not a conclusive authenticity test. Do not decide that a notice is genuine—or fake—on appearance alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep invoice fraud separate from notice verification. Guidance about identifying fake GST invoices concerns invoices and suspected fictitious supplies; it does not authenticate an enforcement notice. Checking a GSTIN can corroborate taxpayer identity, but invoice-specific fields, penalties, risk indicators, or fraud statistics are not a substitute for the RFN check and should not be used to assess the authenticity of a notice.
If the RFN is missing, unavailable, or does not match
- Do not treat the document as authenticated. Preserve the original message and attachment, and note the RFN and the date you tried to check it. Avoid deleting the communication while you are clarifying the discrepancy.
- Check the number carefully. Re-enter the RFN through the official portal you opened independently. A transcription error can affect a lookup, so compare the number in the document with the one you entered.
- Compare the complete result. If the portal returns information, compare the reference number, document type, issue details, issuing officer, and stated purpose—not just one matching detail.
- Use independent contact details. If the result remains absent or inconsistent, contact GSTN or the relevant tax authority using contact details obtained independently from official sources. Do not rely on a phone number, reply address, or link contained only in the message you are checking.
- Protect your account. Do not share your password, OTP, or provisional credentials with the sender or anyone who contacts you unexpectedly. GSTN’s guidance warns against requests for these details.
- Handle a verified notice on its merits. If the notice does verify as genuine, note its stated response deadline and obtain qualified professional advice if you need help understanding or answering it. Verification does not itself prepare or file a response for you.
A missing or inconsistent RFN is a cue to pause, preserve evidence, and get confirmation—not to panic, pay, or assume that you have already determined the legal status of the communication. Conversely, if the record matches, do not ignore the notice simply because you first received it by email or because the PDF has no visible signature. Check its stated deadline and seek suitable advice about what it requires.
Keep a record of the check
Retain the notice and the related email, SMS, or message. Record the RFN, the date of your portal check, and what the portal returned, including any mismatch you noticed. Keep the original document as received rather than relying only on a rewritten or forwarded copy. If you contact GSTN or the tax authority, note that you did so and use contact details obtained from official sources.
This record is useful whether the result matches or not. For a mismatch, it helps you explain exactly what could not be confirmed. For a matching result, it helps you keep the verification separate from the next step: understanding the notice, its deadline, and any response it may require. If you consult a tax professional, the document and your notes can help you describe what you checked without treating the portal result as an answer to the notice’s legal merits.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I verify a GST notice online?
Open the GST Portal independently and use its Verify RFN service. You can use the pre-login service at https://services.gst.gov.in/services/verifyRfn, or sign in and go to Dashboard > Services > User Services > Verify RFN. Enter the notice’s RFN and compare the returned document, issuer, issue details, and purpose with what you received.
What is Verify RFN on the GST Portal?
Verify RFN is GSTN’s notice-verification service for checking communications initiated through the GST system. GSTN says it is available before login and after login. It is the notice-specific check; a GSTIN lookup is a separate taxpayer identity check.
How can I check if a GST notice is fake?
Do not rely on the logo, sender name, visible signature, or message wording alone. Verify the RFN through the official GST Portal and check that the returned document, issuing officer, and purpose match. If the RFN is missing, cannot be confirmed, or returns inconsistent details, treat the matter as unresolved and contact GSTN or the relevant tax authority using independently obtained official contact details.
Is a GST notice valid if there is no visible digital signature?
The absence of a visible signature alone does not prove a notice is fake. GSTN’s 25 September 2024 advisory says certain system-generated notices and orders downloaded from the common portal may not display the officer’s signature, while the system stores document and issuing-officer details. That explanation applies to the communications covered by the advisory, not every unsigned file, so verify the specific document through Verify RFN.
Can I verify a GST notice without logging in?
Yes. GSTN says Verify RFN is available pre-login. Open the official portal yourself and use https://services.gst.gov.in/services/verifyRfn. The post-login route is Dashboard > Services > User Services > Verify RFN.

Does Search Taxpayer verify a GST notice?
No. Search Taxpayer can corroborate GSTIN or UIN details, including information such as legal and trade names and registration status. It checks taxpayer identity, not whether a particular notice was issued through the GST system. Use Verify RFN for the notice itself.
What should I do if the RFN result does not match or is unavailable?
Recheck the RFN carefully through the independently opened official portal, preserve the message and attachment, and note the date and result of your check. If the result remains absent or inconsistent, seek confirmation from GSTN or the relevant tax authority through contact details obtained independently from official sources. Do not pay or disclose sensitive information solely because a message creates urgency.
Should I share an OTP or password with someone who says they are from the tax department?
No. GSTN’s guidance says government departments or officials will not ask for account credentials or OTP details. Do not share passwords, OTPs, or provisional credentials with someone who contacted you unexpectedly.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Verify a purported GST notice or order through the official GST Portal’s Verify RFN service, then compare the portal’s returned document, issuing officer, and purpose with your copy. A missing visible digital signature alone does not prove a portal-generated communication is fake, and a GSTIN lookup is not a notice check. If the RFN is missing or does not match, preserve the message and confirm through independently sourced official channels before acting.
