How to Verify a Crypto Investment Platform and Its Operators

A practical sequence for checking who operates a crypto platform, whether its regulatory claims match its service, and what to verify before trusting its claims.

Verify the exact legal entity behind the platform, the service it offers, and whether the relevant regulator’s official records support its claims. Then independently check its contact details, named operators, custody and withdrawal terms, and performance claims. A brand name, app, or register entry alone cannot answer all of those questions.

How do I verify a crypto investment platform?

Use the same sequence for every platform. The right regulator and requirements depend on where you live, which legal entity is offering the service, and what it does. A trading venue, adviser, broker, custodian, token issuer, lending service, or derivatives provider may be subject to different rules.

  1. Identify the counterparty. Record the precise legal name of the company or individual offering the service, its claimed country of establishment and registered address, any regulator and reference number it cites, and the exact service being promoted. Save copies of the website claims, terms, and disclosures. Distinguish the legal entity from a brand or app name; also note any separate company said to hold assets or process payments.
  2. Check the official register yourself. Go to the regulator’s own site rather than using a link provided by the platform or a salesperson. Search using both the claimed legal name and any firm or registration number. Confirm the record refers to the same entity and that its stated permissions cover the activity being offered.
  3. Compare contact details independently. Match the register’s address, phone number, and other listed details against the website, emails, and people contacting you. If you need to confirm something, use contact details obtained independently from the regulator’s record—not a number, link, or payment instruction in a solicitation.
  4. Check named people. Look up principals, advisers, and salespeople in official systems where available, and compare identity and role details rather than relying on a matching name alone. U.S. SEC/CFTC guidance points investors to Investor.gov, state securities regulators, CFTC disciplinary-history resources, and the SEC’s Action Lookup for Individuals (SALI), which covers certain judgments and orders in SEC proceedings.
  5. Read the terms and test the claims. Find out how the service says it earns money, where customer assets are held, who controls withdrawals, what rights customers receive, which fees and lockups apply, and what the terms say happens if the company fails. Seek explanations you can understand and documents you can verify independently.

Which official records should I check?

Start with the regulator relevant to your country and the particular activity—not a general internet search or a promoter’s “licensed” badge. The following are official examples, not a complete directory of regulators worldwide.

  • United Kingdom: The FCA directs consumers to check its Financial Services Register and compare the firm’s listed contact details with the details given to them. Its guidance notes that some crypto products, including crypto CFDs, are regulated by the FCA; that is not a claim that every crypto product or platform must be FCA registered. See the FCA’s crypto investment scams guidance.
  • United States: SEC/CFTC investor guidance directs people to resources including Investor.gov, relevant state securities regulators, and CFTC disciplinary resources. The CFTC’s RED List identifies entities that appear to be operating in a capacity requiring CFTC registration but are not appropriately registered. SEC guidance addresses securities laws and crypto-asset securities or securities-related services; whether a particular token or service falls within those rules is a legal question. See the joint SEC/CFTC alert on fraudulent digital-asset and crypto trading websites and the SEC’s crypto-asset securities alert. The SEC’s page on its 2026 interpretive release reports an issue date of March 17, 2026, and an effective date of March 23, 2026; this article does not attempt to summarize its legal test.
  • Nigeria: In a notice published May 14, 2026, Nigeria’s SEC advised the public to check its designated portals for platform and entity registration before investing in online investment schemes. The notice references the Investments and Securities Act, 2025. See the SEC Nigeria public notice.

These examples do not establish which rules apply to a specific offer in another country. If the service, entity, or applicable regulator is unclear, treat that as unresolved rather than assuming a registration elsewhere settles the question.

How can I check if a crypto investment company is legitimate?

Use the register to test specific claims, then corroborate identity through a separate channel. A genuine company’s name or registration details can be copied by an impostor. A mismatch in domains, phone numbers, addresses, or payment instructions is a serious reason to stop and investigate. Do not let a platform’s own explanation of a mismatch substitute for independent confirmation.

For the people behind the offer, check official background or disciplinary resources where available. The SEC/CFTC alert recommends checking individuals through Investor.gov, state securities regulators, CFTC disciplinary-history records, and SALI. A search result with the same name is not enough to establish that you have found the person contacting you.

What warning signs should make me stop?

In their April 24, 2019 joint alert, SEC and CFTC staff warned about guaranteed high returns, claims of little or no risk, unlicensed sellers, opaque jargon, unsolicited offers, and pressure to act immediately. As they put it: “All investments have risk, and investors should question any so-called ‘guaranteed’ return.” The warning is practical guidance, not a current finding about any particular platform. See the joint alert.

The SEC also identifies suspiciously fast account growth and fake testimonials as potential scam signals in its digital-asset and crypto investment scams alert. Do not treat a professional-looking website, app, or displayed account balance as independent evidence: the FCA warns that scammers can manipulate software to show false prices and investment returns.

What a registration record does—and does not—tell you

A register entry can help establish whether a particular entity appears in an official record and what activities that record permits. It does not, by itself, verify every claim made by the platform or establish that an investment is safe. Protections also differ by jurisdiction and service. The FCA cautions: “But remember, just because a firm is registered, doesn’t mean you’ll have access to the FSCS or the Financial Ombudsman if something goes wrong.” The SEC has separately warned that crypto-asset securities platforms may lack important investor protections.

Check Evidence to record What an unresolved result means
Legal identity and jurisdiction Exact legal entity, claimed country, and the service it offers You cannot confidently identify the counterparty.
Register and permitted activity Official record, regulator, reference number, and scope of permissions The claimed authorization or its relevance to the service is unverified.
Contact details Whether independently obtained official details match the platform and its representatives Possible impersonation or an unexplained discrepancy needs investigation.
Operators Names, roles, identity details, and any available official disciplinary records You have not established who is responsible for the offer.
Customer terms Asset custody, withdrawal control, rights, fees, lockups, and failure provisions You do not have a clear picture of what you are agreeing to.
Performance claims How results are calculated and whether supporting information can be independently verified The claim remains unsubstantiated; do not treat it as established performance.
Complaints or compensation Protections that apply to this entity, service, and your location Do not assume a complaint route or compensation scheme will cover you.

If you have already sent money

Preserve messages, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, account statements, screenshots of the site, and copies of the terms. Report the matter promptly to the relevant regulator or law-enforcement agency using contact information from its official site. Be wary of anyone who demands another payment to release funds or guarantees recovery; the SEC notes that recovering losses from crypto scams can be difficult.
