If you mean your Amazon.com gift-card balance, check it at Amazon’s balance page, then review the payment method shown during checkout to confirm whether it can be applied to your order. “Amazon account balance” can also refer to a separate Amazon Payments balance, which follows different rules.

Know which Amazon balance you mean
Amazon.com gift-card balance and Amazon Payments balance are not interchangeable terms. Amazon Pay describes an “Available Balance” as funds available for purchases or disbursement, while “Current Balance” includes available funds plus pending payments. A current balance may therefore be higher than the amount currently available. See Amazon Pay’s balance explanation.
A separate Amazon Payments help result describes a payment-selection flow for Amazon Payments balance, but it is not instructions for applying Amazon.com gift-card balance. Do not rely on it to determine gift-card checkout eligibility; check the payment choices displayed for your specific order.

If a refund appeared in your balance
Amazon says that when it cannot use the original payment method—for example, an expired card—it sends the refund to the Amazon account balance. Check the gift-card balance page to see whether the funds are there. Refund timing depends on the refund method and other factors such as order type, return shipping, and processing time.
Amazon’s US help page gives these processing estimates. They are estimates, not guarantees, and the page does not state a publication year:

Not every item or service is necessarily eligible. A Seller Central forum discussion reproduces terms restricting Amazon.com Balance from buying other gift cards, prepaid open-loop cards, and certain third-party gift cards. Because this is secondary material and the linked official terms were not available here, treat it as a reason to verify current Amazon.com gift-card terms, not as a definitive statement of today’s policy.
