For a local sale, meet in public, inspect the item before paying, and use Goods and Services if you pay through PayPal. Never treat an email or screenshot as proof that a seller has been paid: check the transaction in the PayPal account itself. PayPal protection is conditional, and local pickup has different rules from shipping.
Can you use PayPal on Craigslist?
Yes. Buyer and seller arrange payment separately; Craigslist does not process or guarantee it. You can send money using a seller’s PayPal email, phone number, username, or PayPal.Me link, or use a payment link or QR code. PayPal’s send-money instructions describe the available recipient options.

Craigslist recommends local, face-to-face transactions and advises against providing or accepting payment before meeting. Its scam-avoidance guidance also warns about shipping, movers, escrow, and advance-payment arrangements. If a stranger insists on a remote deal or an unfamiliar payment intermediary, walking away is safer than trying to make the payment method compensate for the risk.

Choose the right payment method
For a purchase from a stranger, do not select Friends and Family to save a fee. PayPal describes that option as a personal payment; personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection. Goods and Services is the purchase category and may be eligible for protection, subject to PayPal’s terms. The seller pays a fee on a Goods and Services payment. See PayPal’s comparison of Friends and Family and Goods and Services.

| Method | Fit for a Craigslist purchase | Protection and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Friends and Family | No | Personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection. |
| Goods and Services | Yes, if both parties choose PayPal | May qualify for Purchase Protection; eligibility and exclusions apply, and the seller pays a fee. |
| Goods and Services QR payment in person | Potentially | An in-person QR payment may qualify under PayPal’s current terms; it is not a guaranteed refund. |
| Cash at local pickup | Often practical | Immediate and avoids payment-account scams, but offers no PayPal dispute route and little recourse after the sale. |
PayPal’s U.S. business fee table lists 2.99% for sending or receiving money for Goods and Services and 2.29% plus a fixed fee for QR-code transactions. These are fee-table rates, not a guarantee of the cost for every account or transaction; the applicable charge can depend on the payment and account terms. The fee page was updated July 15, 2026. Check the current PayPal U.S. fee schedule before agreeing on who will bear the fee.
How to pay a Craigslist seller through PayPal
For a local deal, do these steps at the meeting, after checking the item. PayPal may change its app labels; look for wording such as “For Goods and Services” or “Paying for an item or service.”
- Arrange a public meeting and inspect or test the item before paying. Confirm the exact price and any known defects.
- Confirm the seller’s PayPal identity directly. Check the email, phone number, username, or link with the seller rather than relying on an unsolicited payment request.
- Open the PayPal app or type PayPal.com into your browser yourself. Select Send and Request.
- Enter the seller’s name, username, email address, or mobile number, then enter the agreed amount.
- Select For Goods and Services or Paying for an item or service when offered. Do not use Friends and Family for a purchase.
- Add a concise, accurate note identifying the item and Craigslist listing. For a used item, you can record its model and the condition agreed at the meeting.
- Review the recipient, amount, funding source, and payment type before sending. Save the PayPal transaction record and relevant Craigslist messages.
PayPal’s published payment steps include identifying the recipient, entering an amount, choosing a payment type when available, reviewing the details, and sending. If the Goods and Services choice is not available, do not assume the payment is a protected purchase; stop and resolve the payment type before sending.

A link can be convenient, but it is not proof that a payment is due or received. PayPal’s help page describes creating a link in the app through Send/Request and the option for sending or requesting money with a link; enter the amount and select the purchase payment type where appropriate. Creating a link is free, normal transaction fees may apply, and an unused link expires after 10 days, according to PayPal’s link instructions. Check the destination carefully, or open PayPal independently instead of following a button in an email or text.
How to pay in person with a PayPal QR code
A QR code is a PayPal option for an in-person transaction, but the payment type matters. Ask the seller to use a Goods and Services QR code if this is a purchase, then check the payment details before confirming.
- Open the latest version of the PayPal app and tap its QR-code icon, or use the phone camera if prompted.
- Scan the seller’s code and check that the payment screen identifies the intended recipient.
- Enter the agreed amount and select the Goods and Services purchase type if offered.
- Review the recipient and amount, then tap Send.
- Keep the transaction record and do not leave without confirming the payment status in your account.
PayPal’s QR-code instructions describe this flow. Under PayPal’s U.S. Purchase Protection terms, updated January 26, 2026, an in-person transaction paid by scanning a Goods and Services QR code may be eligible. “May” matters: eligibility is not automatic, and the buyer should inspect the item first.

How sellers can accept PayPal safely
The seller’s key safeguard is to verify payment in their own PayPal account, not in a message the buyer supplies. Keep communication in Craigslist’s mail relay where practical, agree on the item, price, location, and payment method before meeting, and arrange a public exchange. A police-station exchange area or bank lobby may be appropriate for a higher-value item where available.
- Show the item and allow reasonable inspection. Discuss material defects and document the condition the buyer accepts.
- If accepting PayPal in person, consider a Goods and Services QR payment when available; do not represent it as guaranteed protection.
- Open the PayPal app yourself or visit PayPal.com directly. Go to Activity and open the transaction details.
- Confirm the amount, payer, status, and transaction description in the account. A real pending entry is different from an email claiming payment is pending; understand any hold or review before releasing the item.
- Do not hand over or ship the item based solely on an email, text, forwarded notice, or screenshot. If the payment does not appear in the account, treat the item as unpaid.
- Do not refund an alleged overpayment or pay an “upgrade,” release, insurance, or verification fee. Do not send money elsewhere at a buyer’s request to unlock a payment.
PayPal’s marketplace scam guidance advises sellers to check their account rather than rely on a notification. Its separate invoice and money-request scam guidance warns about alarming notes, fake support numbers, and suspicious links. Do not call a number from a suspicious invoice.
If the seller ships the item
Shipping is riskier than a local exchange and is not Craigslist’s recommended default. If a seller chooses to ship, follow the address and documentation requirements shown in the PayPal transaction details and keep proof of shipment and delivery. PayPal’s U.S. Seller Protection terms, updated January 26, 2026, make eligibility conditional; shipping to a different address or using a buyer-arranged forwarding service can undermine it. A request to ship to an agent or mover is a warning sign, not a reason to bypass the transaction details.
What PayPal protection does—and does not—cover
PayPal is a payment service, not a guarantee that a Craigslist purchase will be refunded. Its U.S. Purchase Protection program may cover eligible Item Not Received and Significantly Not as Described claims. A qualifying claim may result in a refund of the purchase price and original shipping cost; PayPal decides eligibility and may require the buyer to return the item. Return shipping may not be covered.
Among the conditions in PayPal’s current U.S. terms, the buyer must use a PayPal account in good standing, pay from that account, try to resolve the issue with the seller, open a dispute through the Resolution Center within the applicable deadline, and provide requested documentation. PayPal’s Buyer Protection terms govern the claim; check them for the transaction rather than assuming that selecting Goods and Services ensures reimbursement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy local pickup is different from shipping
If the buyer collects the item in person, a claim that the item was never received generally does not fit PayPal’s Item Not Received coverage. PayPal’s stated exception is an in-person purchase paid by scanning a Goods and Services QR code, which may be eligible. That exception does not make every dispute successful, and Purchase Protection is not a general warranty for a used item that develops a problem after inspection.

- Updated Compliance: While the new rule takes effect on 7/19/2024, training and compliance dates don’t start until 1/19/2026, giving your team ample time to prepare with this thorough guide to OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1910.1200(j)).

- In-Depth, Easy-to-Understand Content: Each chapter tackles key workplace hazards like Electrical Safety, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, and more, helping to prevent injuries and illnesses while promoting safe practices.
- Interactive Learning with Quizzes: Engaging chapter review quizzes reinforce safety concepts, making it easier for employees to retain and apply the knowledge, with downloadable answer keys for easy tracking.
- Specifications: English, Softbound, full-color pages (272 pages) offer clear, visually appealing safety information for a diverse workforce, with home safety details included throughout.
For a shipped transaction, an Item Not Received claim may be relevant, but delivery evidence and the other eligibility requirements matter. Buyers should not pay before seeing an item on the assumption that Goods and Services eliminates the risk if the seller disappears.
Common exclusions and limits
- Friends and Family and other personal payments are not covered by Purchase Protection.
- In-person collection is generally excluded for an Item Not Received claim, subject to the Goods and Services QR-code exception described above.
- Payments not made through the buyer’s PayPal account, prohibited goods or services, and transactions that do not meet eligibility or documentation requirements may not qualify.
- PayPal’s terms also exclude some categories, including certain custom-made items for Significantly Not as Described claims and items intended for resale.
- Unauthorized transactions and account-compromise claims follow a different process from Purchase Protection.
For sellers, Seller Protection may apply to certain unauthorized-transaction, Item Not Received, or payment-reversal claims. A U.S. seller’s primary address must be in the United States; for shipped goods, the seller must ship to the address on the transaction details and retain the required evidence. In-person delivery is generally excluded unless the buyer pays in person with a Goods and Services QR code. Seller Protection does not necessarily cover a buyer’s claim that an item was significantly not as described, and it is not insurance against every dispute or policy violation. See the current Seller Protection terms.

- Fake payment email or screenshot: A scammer claims the seller has been paid, hoping the seller will release or ship the item. Log in directly and check Activity; screenshots and emails are not payment verification.
- Overpayment: The buyer claims to have sent too much and asks for the difference back, often through another method. Do not return money based on a message or screenshot.
- Shipping agent or mover: The buyer cannot meet, offers more than the asking price, or asks for shipment to an agent. Craigslist and PayPal both identify these patterns as warning signs.
- Friends and Family pressure: A party says to use it to avoid fees or speed things up. For a purchase, it is the wrong payment category and has no Purchase Protection.
- Fake invoice or account-upgrade request: An invoice note claims you must call a number, click a link, pay a fee, or upgrade an account to receive money. Do not follow the instructions; inspect the account directly and report the suspicious request.
- Phishing or verification-code request: A message asks you to sign in through an external page or share a Craigslist or PayPal code. Do not provide passwords or one-time codes, and avoid attachments and unfamiliar forms.
See PayPal’s scam guidance and Craigslist’s phishing advice for additional warning signs.
What to do if you think you were scammed
If you are the buyer
- Contact the seller once through the established Craigslist or PayPal channel and preserve the listing, messages, photos, payment record, and shipping information.
- If the transaction appears eligible, use PayPal’s Resolution Center and follow its requests for information. Do not close a dispute just because the seller promises an informal refund.
- If you shared login details or a verification code, change your PayPal password immediately, change any reused password elsewhere, review activity and linked funding sources, and contact PayPal through its official app or website.
If you are the seller
- Do not release or ship the item until you have checked the payment inside PayPal. Preserve the message, email, listing, and transaction details.
- Report suspicious emails or invoices through PayPal’s official channels. Craigslist listings can be flagged with the posting’s prohibited link; for broader reporting, use Craigslist contact.
- If you disclosed account details or a code, change your password immediately, change reused passwords, review account activity, and contact PayPal through its app or website.
PayPal or cash: which is safer?
Neither is universally safer. Cash is simple to verify at a local handoff and avoids PayPal fees, account notifications, and disputes, but it gives little recourse if the item is counterfeit, defective, misrepresented, or stolen; counterfeit bills are also possible. PayPal can create a record and eligible Goods and Services payments may offer a dispute route, but fees, eligibility limits, fake notifications, and seller disputes remain possible. Neither method replaces inspecting the item or taking reasonable steps to confirm ownership.
For a local, ordinary purchase, choose a public face-to-face exchange and a payment method both parties understand. For vehicles, real estate, deposits, or another high-value transaction, do not treat PayPal as the default: verify ownership and required documents, and consider a bank, licensed escrow, title professional, or other process appropriate to the transaction and local law. Do not use an escrow link supplied by a stranger.
