To use it, add an eligible card to a supported iPhone or Apple Watch, then authenticate and hold the device near a contactless payment terminal. At launch, Apple named Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards; eligibility is card-specific, so confirm your card with Apple and its issuer before relying on it.
Check that your card and device are eligible
Cards available at launch
Apple’s September 30, 2026 launch announcement named Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. That does not mean every Axis Bank card is eligible, or that Axis debit cards, RuPay cards, UPI accounts or cards from other banks work. Apple cautions that some banks may not support every card type and says its eligible-card list will be updated as banks are added. Check Apple’s India eligible-card list and ask your card issuer to confirm your specific card.
Supported Apple devices and software
- iPhone: iPhone XR or later with iOS 18 or later.
- Apple Watch: Apple Watch Series 6 or later with watchOS 11 or later, paired with iPhone XR or later.
- iPad: Apple supports in-app and web checkout on iPad; consult Apple’s current compatibility guidance for your model and software.
Apple’s launch announcement described Mac support as coming soon. Do not assume Apple Pay checkout on a Mac is available; check Apple’s current compatibility information before trying to set it up. Apple lists India as a supported Apple Pay country, but country availability does not establish that a particular Indian card is eligible.
Add your card to Apple Wallet
- On your iPhone, open the Wallet app.
- Tap the + button and follow the prompts to add your eligible card.
- Complete any verification requested by your bank. Once the card has been added, Apple says you can start using it.
If your card cannot be added, first confirm that the exact card type is supported with the issuer and check Apple’s eligible-card list. Having an Apple device or an account with a participating bank does not by itself make every card eligible.

Pay in a shop with iPhone or Apple Watch

- Double-click the side button, or the Home button on an iPhone that has one.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode if prompted.
- Hold the top of the iPhone near the reader until the payment is accepted.
With Apple Watch
- Invoke Apple Pay on your watch.
- Hold the watch display near the contactless reader until the payment is accepted.
Apple announced acceptance at millions of merchants in India at launch. Examples it named include Apple Store locations, Blinkit, Chaayos, Comet, Croma, Interflora, Ixigo, Le15 Patisserie, Reliance brands, Tata 1mg and Zomato. It also identified payment service providers including BillDesk, Cashfree, Juspay, Mswipe, Paytm, PayU, Pine Labs and Razorpay. These examples do not guarantee acceptance at every branch or checkout: the merchant must have Apple Pay enabled. Look for contactless acceptance in person and for Apple Pay as an option online.
Use Apple Pay in apps and on the web
On a supported iPhone or iPad, choose Apple Pay when it appears at an app or website’s checkout, review the payment and shipping details, and confirm the purchase. Apple Pay is only available for that transaction if the merchant offers it. Apple’s September 2026 launch announcement said Mac support was coming soon, so check Apple’s current compatibility guidance rather than assuming you can pay from a Mac.

Know what happens when you are offline or pay abroad
Apple says in-store payments can work without Wi-Fi or cellular service: the iPhone or Apple Watch communicates with the terminal using NFC. Your transaction history may not appear until the device reconnects. That offline statement concerns in-store payments; it does not mean an app or website can complete checkout without the connectivity it requires.
Apple says Apple Pay works internationally wherever contactless payments are accepted. Acceptance and any foreign transaction or other charges depend on the merchant and your card issuer, so ask your issuer about overseas fees before travelling.

Fees, rewards and privacy
Apple says it does not charge a fee for Apple Pay transactions. Your card issuer may still apply its usual fees. Apple says card rewards and benefits continue, but the issuer sets their terms; check your card agreement for how a transaction qualifies.
Apple says payments are protected by Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode, and that the actual card number is not stored on Apple servers or shared with merchants. Apple also says it does not sell transaction data for third-party marketing or advertising. These are Apple’s statements about its service, not independent test findings.

What to check if Apple Pay is not working
- Card setup fails: Confirm the exact card type with the issuer and check Apple’s eligible-card list. A bank’s participation does not necessarily cover all its cards.
- The terminal does not accept the payment: Confirm that it supports contactless payments and that the merchant has enabled Apple Pay. Acceptance can vary between merchants and locations.
- You cannot choose Apple Pay online: The app or website must offer Apple Pay at checkout. For Mac checkout, verify current Apple compatibility guidance because Apple described Mac support as coming soon at launch.
- The transaction appears missing from Wallet: Apple says transaction history may not show until the device reconnects to Wi-Fi or cellular service.
Apple Pay in India: the practical takeaway
Apple Pay is available in India, but the key qualification is the card, not simply the country or device. At launch, the named options were Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Once your specific card is confirmed and added to a compatible device, use contactless checkout in person or select Apple Pay where an app or website offers it.
