You can use most prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards on Amazon.com for eligible purchases. Add the card in Account & Lists → Your Account → Your Payments → Add a payment method, then select it at checkout. The key restriction: the card generally must cover the entire order total, including tax and shipping, because Amazon says prepaid cards cannot be combined with another payment card on one order.
Can you use a Visa, Mastercard, or Amex gift card on Amazon?
Amazon staff guidance says prepaid Visa, Mastercard, and American Express gift cards can be used for the majority of purchases on Amazon.com, subject to restrictions. The basic process is the same for all three networks; whether a particular card works depends on its issuer’s online-purchase rules, billing details, and security-code requirements.

This guidance applies to Amazon.com in the United States. Amazon regional sites may have different prepaid-card or CVV rules. Amazon Pay at third-party merchants is a separate checkout service and does not accept Amazon.com Gift Cards.
How to add and use a prepaid gift card
- Activate the card and check its balance. Use the issuer’s website or instructions on the card. Make sure the available balance is enough for the full Amazon order total, including tax and shipping.
- Register your billing details if required. Some issuers require you to register a name and billing address before making online purchases. Follow the issuer’s instructions and use those same details when Amazon asks for a billing address.
- Add the card to your Amazon account. Go to Account & Lists → Your Account → Your Payments → Add a payment method. Enter the card number, expiration date, and security code if the issuer provides one and Amazon’s form accepts it. Amazon also allows customers to add a payment method during checkout.
- Select the card at checkout. Choose it as the payment method and submit the order only if its available balance covers the complete total. Amazon may place a temporary $1 authorization to validate a payment card. This is not a purchase charge, but the card issuer may hold the amount temporarily.
Why a prepaid gift card may be declined
A decline does not necessarily mean Amazon rejects that card network. Check the details that commonly affect online authorization:
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
- Activation and available balance: Confirm the card is active and has enough available funds for the whole order. A temporary authorization can also affect the amount currently available.
- Billing information: If the issuer requires registration, make sure the name and address entered at Amazon match the details registered with the issuer.
- Card details and expiration: Recheck the card number and expiration date. Follow the issuer’s instructions for the security code.
- CVV compatibility: Amazon’s published restrictions note that some cards’ three-digit CVVs are not supported in certain Amazon environments. If the code is rejected, check with the issuer and Amazon rather than guessing or repeatedly entering different details.
- Issuer restrictions: A prepaid card may have limits on online, recurring, or particular-category transactions. Ask the issuer whether the attempted purchase is allowed.
Can you split an Amazon order across the card and another payment card?
Amazon’s prepaid-card restrictions say you cannot combine a prepaid card with another payment card on one order. That means a prepaid card with a smaller balance generally cannot cover part of an order while a debit or credit card pays the remainder.
Use the remaining balance through an Amazon Gift Card
Amazon staff have described a workaround for valid Visa or Mastercard prepaid cards: add the prepaid card as a payment method, use it to buy an Amazon.com Gift Card, then redeem the gift-card claim code to your Amazon Gift Card Balance. This can make a small remaining amount usable toward Amazon purchases, but the Amazon Gift Card purchase must still be approved by the issuer. The cited staff guidance names Visa and Mastercard for this method; it does not establish the same workaround for Amex.

Never give an Amazon Gift Card claim code to a caller, seller, or other third party. Amazon says legitimate gift-card transactions happen through Amazon checkout.
What differs between Visa, Mastercard, and Amex gift cards?
The Amazon workflow is essentially the same for each network. The practical differences are determined by the specific issuer and card, not by a universal rule that one network works better on Amazon.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Registration requirements | Some issuers require a name and billing address for online authorization; use the details registered with the issuer. |
| Security-code format | Amazon notes that some three-digit CVVs are not supported in certain environments. Check the issuer’s instructions and Amazon’s accepted fields. |
| Available balance | The prepaid card generally needs to cover the complete order total, not just part of it. |
| Issuer transaction limits | Online, recurring, or restricted-category purchases may be limited by the issuer. |
| Amazon Gift Card purchase | A Visa or Mastercard prepaid card may be used for this workaround if the purchase authorizes successfully; the cited Amazon staff guidance does not confirm it for Amex. |
