To calculate UK VAT, first check whether your starting price is before VAT or already includes it, then use the rate that applies to the specific goods or service. For most goods and services, the standard rate is 20%: multiply a VAT-exclusive price by 1.2 to add VAT, or divide a VAT-inclusive price by 1.2 to remove it. The VAT amount is the difference between the inclusive and exclusive figures. A calculator does the arithmetic; it does not decide the correct VAT treatment or whether a business must register.
First identify what your price represents
A VAT-exclusive price is the amount before VAT is added. A VAT-inclusive price is the total after VAT has been added. The same rate requires a different operation depending on which figure you have:
- Starting with a price before VAT: multiply by 1 plus the VAT rate to get the total.
- Starting with a price that includes VAT: divide by 1 plus the VAT rate to recover the amount before VAT.
These calculations assume the rate used is correct for the supply. HMRC says most goods and services are standard-rated, but the applicable treatment depends on the item, service and circumstances. HMRC’s guidance on how much VAT to charge explains the rates and classification.
How to add VAT to a price
Multiply the VAT-exclusive price by 1 plus the applicable rate. For the standard rate of 20%, multiply by 1.2.

Example: add 20% VAT
- Price before VAT: £60
- VAT: £60 × 0.20 = £12
- Total including VAT: £60 × 1.2 = £72
This is the calculation in HMRC’s example of a £60 chair. For a supply that qualifies for the 5% reduced rate, multiply the exclusive amount by 1.05. HMRC’s example of a £200 child’s car seat gives £210 including VAT. The example illustrates the calculation, not a rule that every car seat or transaction qualifies.
How to remove VAT from a price that includes it
Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1 plus the applicable rate to find the amount before VAT. Subtract that amount from the original total to find the VAT element.

- [SENSITIVE AND BIG BUTTONS] - Your calculation process will be faster and smoother with this calculator’s responsive buttons. Once pressed, the buttons quickly register and display the corresponding number on the screen. The big size of the buttons prevents you from hitting the wrong button.
- [DUAL POWER DESIGN] - This calculator utilizes both the solar power and battery power (battery included). The solar panel, as long as you use it in a lit environment, will power up the calculator thoroughly.
- [VERSATILE PURPOSES] -This calculator is designed for many occasions: business, office, home, basic budgeting, school, and more. Use it to assist your personal finance or just a quick calculation session.
- [FUNCTIONALITIES] - Add, subtract, multiply, divide, backspace, grand total, CE, %, M+/M-/MRC, On/AC Button, and Auto Power-Off. The calculator will turn itself off after about 6 minutes of being idle.
Example: remove 20% VAT
- Total including VAT: £180
- Amount before VAT: £180 ÷ 1.2 = £150
- VAT included: £180 − £150 = £30
Do not calculate the net amount by subtracting 20% of the gross total. The gross total is 120% of the net price, so dividing by 1.2 is the correct way to reverse the standard-rate calculation.
Example: remove 5% VAT
For a total that qualifies for the reduced rate, divide by 1.05. HMRC’s £483 stairlift example gives an amount before VAT of £460 and a VAT element of £23. Whether a particular stairlift supply qualifies depends on the relevant conditions; the arithmetic alone does not establish that.

Which UK VAT rate should you use?
HMRC lists three rates: the standard rate, currently 20% for most goods and services; the reduced rate, currently 5% for specified supplies; and the zero rate for specified supplies. Examples in HMRC guidance include certain child car seats, domestic fuel or power, and specified mobility aids at 5%, and books and children’s clothes at 0%. These are examples, not a complete classification guide. Check the precise supply and circumstances in HMRC’s rate guidance before using a calculator.
Zero-rated and exempt are not the same. A zero-rated supply is taxable at 0%, while exempt supplies have a different VAT treatment. That distinction can affect obligations beyond the price calculation. For further detail, see HMRC’s VAT and duties guidance.

Whether the business must register
Registration is a separate question from the VAT on an individual sale. HMRC’s general threshold is more than £90,000 in taxable turnover. Its rules also cover businesses that expect to exceed the threshold in the next 30 days, and the usual test looks at taxable turnover over a rolling 12-month period. Read HMRC’s threshold guidance and when-to-register guidance to assess the relevant rules.

What counts towards taxable turnover
The threshold calculation is not simply the total of every amount received. HMRC says taxable turnover includes standard-, reduced- and zero-rated supplies, while exempt and out-of-scope supplies are excluded. A calculator applied to one invoice cannot determine a business’s rolling turnover. See HMRC’s guidance on when to register for the turnover rules.
How much VAT the business owes or can reclaim
A price calculation does not determine a VAT return liability. VAT schemes can change how a registered business accounts for VAT. For example, the Flat Rate Scheme calculates VAT owed as a percentage of gross turnover and has eligibility conditions. HMRC describes available schemes at VAT schemes. Its tool for checking what registering may mean for a business, published 10 July 2024, can help estimate VAT owed or reclaimed.
Invoice, record and return requirements
VAT-registered businesses have responsibilities for charging the right rate, showing VAT information on invoices, keeping records and reporting through returns. A calculator does not create or maintain those records. Consult HMRC’s guidance on charging, reclaiming and recording VAT for the requirements.
Quick Recap
A quick method for everyday calculations
- Confirm the starting figure: decide whether it is before VAT or VAT-inclusive.
- Check the rate: establish how the particular goods, service and circumstances are treated under current HMRC guidance.
- Apply the matching operation: for an exclusive amount, multiply by 1 plus the rate; for an inclusive amount, divide by 1 plus the rate.
- Find the VAT component if needed: subtract the exclusive amount from the inclusive total.
- For a business decision, use the relevant HMRC rules: registration, scheme eligibility and return reporting are not answered by the price calculation.
