You may be able to upgrade an eligible British Airways booking to Club World with Avios, or use a qualifying cabin upgrade voucher when booking a Reward Flight. Either route depends on availability in the next cabin and the terms of your ticket or voucher; having enough Avios alone does not guarantee a seat.
Ways to upgrade to British Airways business class
On long-haul British Airways flights, business class is called Club World. The ordinary Avios upgrade is one cabin at a time: World Traveller Plus to Club World, or World Traveller to World Traveller Plus. If World Traveller Plus is not fitted on the flight, World Traveller may be upgraded directly to Club World. On short-haul flights, the comparable move is Euro Traveller to Club Europe.
British Airways requires Reward Flight availability in the cabin you want to move into. The airline says upgrades with Avios cannot be made at the airport or onboard. See its Flight upgrades with Avios page for the current booking route and terms.
| Route | Booking it can apply to | How to request it |
|---|---|---|
| Avios upgrade | Eligible paid bookings, subject to fare restrictions and availability in the next cabin | Existing booking: Manage My Booking. New trip: Book and Upgrade. |
| Barclays cabin upgrade voucher | Qualifying Reward Flight booked with the voucher; not a paid ticket or amendment to an existing booking | Apply the voucher when making the Reward Flight booking in your BA Club account. |
| Gold upgrade voucher | Eligible members, subject to the relevant terms and reward capacity | Check the voucher in your account and BA’s current conditions. |
A direct Club World booking is another option to compare. The cash difference between that and a lower-cabin fare plus an Avios upgrade varies by flight and date, so use the live BA booking flow rather than assuming an upgrade will be cheaper.

Check whether your ticket qualifies for an Avios upgrade
Not every paid fare can be upgraded. British Airways excludes the lowest World Traveller fare classes Q, O, and G from Avios upgrades. Its published eligible fare classes for BA-operated flights are:
| Cabin on the original ticket | Fare classes listed by BA for upgrades |
|---|---|
| Club World or Club Europe | J, C, D, R, I |
| World Traveller Plus | W, E, T |
| Euro Traveller or World Traveller | Y, B, H, K, L, M, N, S, V |
These are fare classes, not cabin names. Check the booking’s actual class with BA or your travel agent before counting on an upgrade. BA says some eligible travel-agent bookings can be handled through ba.com or a BA service centre, subject to ticketing and fare restrictions; Bulk Tour and Inclusive Tour fares are excluded. Its Conditions of Use set out the detailed rules.

How many Avios does an upgrade cost?
BA calculates the Avios amount as the difference between the Reward Flight Avios price for the destination cabin and the price for the cabin on your original ticket:
Destination-cabin Avios − original-cabin Avios = Avios for a one-way upgrade

As an illustration—not a universal rate—BA gives a peak-date, one-way London–New York example: Club World at 90,000 Avios minus World Traveller Plus at 60,000 Avios equals 30,000 Avios to upgrade. Prices and availability vary by route and date; check the live quote for your itinerary on BA’s upgrade page.
An upgrade also involves a cash amount for the flights and taxes, fees, and carrier charges. BA says that using fewer Avios increases the cash contribution. Review the full cash and Avios total shown for your booking before confirming; the example above does not establish what your own trip will cost.

How to request an Avios upgrade
- For a ticket you already hold: Sign in to ba.com, open Manage My Booking, select the flight, and choose “Upgrade this flight with Avios” if that option is offered. The result depends on your ticket’s eligibility and reward availability.
- For a trip you have not booked: Use BA’s “Book and Upgrade” tool or its reward availability tools to look for a lower-cabin booking with an upgrade available into the next cabin.
- Check the complete quote and ticket conditions: Confirm the Avios, cash charges, upgraded cabin, and any change or cancellation implications before accepting. BA says the original fare conditions continue to apply.
Using a Barclays cabin upgrade voucher
A Barclays cabin upgrade voucher is a separate route from upgrading a paid ticket with Avios. BA’s terms say qualifying Barclays Avios and Barclays Avios Plus cardholders, and Barclays Avios Rewards customers under their respective eligibility conditions, may use a voucher for a one-cabin upgrade on a Reward Flight. Depending on the voucher and booking, it can cover two passengers on a one-way trip or one passenger on a one-way or return trip. It can be used on short- or long-haul Reward Flights where availability and terms permit, but not to upgrade into First.
The voucher must be applied when you make the booking through your BA Club account. BA does not allow it to be added by amending an existing booking or redeemed at the airport. The itinerary must be a BA flight-only booking departing the UK on qualifying BA-operated flights with a BA flight number; partner and codeshare flights are excluded. The base cabin must be booked as a full-Avios redemption: full-cash, “Avios & Money,” and “Pay with Avios” bookings do not qualify. The voucher is valid for 24 months from issue, subject to the terms’ travel commencement deadline, and you still pay the applicable taxes, fees, and carrier charges for the upgraded cabin. Check BA’s current cabin upgrade voucher terms and the voucher’s expiry before booking.

What an upgrade changes—and what it does not
BA’s conditions state that Avios and tier points accrue according to the original commercial ticket, not the upgraded cabin. The original fare conditions also continue to govern the ticket. Upgrade inventory is not waitlisted. Some changes require availability in both the original and upgraded booking classes, and cancellation or refund outcomes depend on timing and the ticket rules. Read the terms that apply to your booking before paying for an upgrade.
BA also describes Gold upgrade vouchers for eligible members. They allow a one-cabin upgrade, including World Traveller Plus to Club World, subject to reward capacity restrictions and the applicable terms. This is distinct from a Barclays voucher; check your account and BA’s current conditions for eligibility and expiry.
