Add and verify a UPI-eligible account from another bank in the app you use, then remove the Paytm Payments Bank account if it remains linked. The exact menus and removal requirements depend on the app. Updating the linked account is separate from withdrawing or transferring any balance held at Paytm Payments Bank.
Before you start: what the change does
The Reserve Bank of India directed Paytm Payments Bank to stop providing banking services, including UPI, after March 15, 2024, subject to exceptions described in its release. The RBI’s FAQ for customers advised them to change their linked account to another bank before that date to avoid disruption.
Changing the linked account in a UPI app does not transfer money held with Paytm Payments Bank, close that account, or itself settle any linked payment arrangements. Paytm Payments Bank said existing balances could be withdrawn despite restrictions on new deposits and credit transactions. The RBI FAQ addresses balance transfers and wallet closure separately, including for a specified full-KYC-wallet situation. Check the relevant bank or RBI guidance for those separate actions.
What you need to link the replacement account
- A bank account that supports UPI.
- Access to the mobile number registered with that bank, using the phone or SIM associated with the UPI app.
- Working outgoing SMS service. Google Pay says its account setup uses outgoing SMS to discover and verify an account; charges, if any, depend on your mobile plan.
- The verification method supported by your bank and app. Google Pay lists debit-card verification and an Aadhaar option only when the bank supports Aadhaar-based onboarding.
On a dual-SIM phone, select the SIM carrying the bank-registered number. NPCI’s BHIM guidance likewise instructs users to select the SIM registered with their bank.

Add the replacement account in your UPI app
Start in the bank-account, UPI, or payment-settings area of the app you actually use. Verify the account before removing the old one, so you can confirm the replacement is available for payments.
Google Pay
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Bank account, then Add bank account.
- Select your bank and the account you want to link.
- Complete the verification route offered by the app and bank. Google Pay documents debit-card verification and, where supported by the bank, an Aadhaar option. See Google Pay’s instructions for adding a bank account.
After linking, check that the replacement appears in your bank-account list and select it for a payment when needed. Google Pay says an account update requires removing the existing account and adding it again.

Paytm app
- Tap the profile icon.
- Open UPI and Payment Settings.
- Tap Add New Bank Account.
- Select the bank and follow the SMS verification steps to link the account.
These are Paytm-specific labels and steps, as shown in Paytm’s help page; they are not universal UPI menus.
BHIM
Use BHIM’s bank-account area to link an account and follow its prompts. NPCI’s BHIM product guidance covers selecting the bank-registered SIM and switching between multiple linked accounts. For exact current screen labels, follow the prompts in the installed app.

Remove the Paytm Payments Bank account if it is still listed
Removal is a separate step from adding the replacement, and apps can have different rules. In Google Pay, the documented route is:
- Open Google Pay and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Bank account and choose the Paytm Payments Bank account.
- Tap More, then Remove account.
Google Pay’s account-management instructions also note that active AutoPay or UPI Lite associations may need attention before an account can be removed. Review the relevant items in that app and follow its prompts before trying again. Do not assume that removing an account in one app removes it from every UPI app where it was linked.

If setup or removal fails
- The app cannot find the account: Confirm the bank supports UPI and that the phone number in the bank’s records matches the number and SIM being used in the app.
- Verification does not complete: Check that outgoing SMS works, the correct SIM is selected, and you are using a verification method your bank supports. Aadhaar onboarding is not available for every bank.
- The old account will not remove: Check for AutoPay mandates or UPI Lite associations attached to it, then retry using the app’s current instructions.
- The menu names do not match: App screens and removal rules vary and may change. Use the help page for the specific app rather than applying another app’s steps.
Keep account changes separate from moving money
If you still have money with Paytm Payments Bank, handle it through the bank’s available withdrawal or transfer process. Updating a UPI app changes which account the app uses; it does not move the existing balance. For wallet closure or a wallet balance transfer, use the RBI FAQ’s specific guidance rather than treating bank-account unlinking as a substitute.
