For U.S. federal student loans, start at StudentAid.gov to identify your current repayment plan and servicer, compare eligible plans, and apply for an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan if that is the change you want. Change Auto Pay and payment due-date settings through your servicer, not by assuming StudentAid.gov controls them. After any request, verify the effective date, next bill, due date, and bank withdrawal details in your account. Private-loan borrowers should follow their lender’s or servicer’s instructions; federal applications do not establish private-loan procedures.
Where to start when you want to change your student loan payment
StudentAid.gov is the starting point for federal loan information, while your servicer handles many account actions. Sign in to the StudentAid.gov account you already use and open the Dashboard. It shows your current repayment plan, loan details, servicer, upcoming payment amount, and due date, and provides links to your servicer. Keep your email and mailing addresses current on both accounts so you receive notices. See Federal Student Aid’s repayment guidance.

Use the Dashboard to establish what is true now before requesting a change. Note the plan name, the amount and date of the next payment, and which servicer is associated with the loan. If you have more than one federal loan, check the loan details rather than assuming every loan has identical terms or account status. The individual options and payment details depend on your own loans and account; the Dashboard and your servicer are the places to confirm them.

An IDR application changes the plan if approved; Auto Pay enrollment, bank-account details, and due-date requests are handled through the servicer. Check the specific account for the action you need. If your goal is to lower your student loan payment, you are asking about a repayment plan and potentially an IDR application. If the amount is manageable but the timing is difficult, ask about a due-date change. If you want payments withdrawn automatically, update Auto Pay. This guide concerns federal student loans. StudentAid.gov’s federal application and plan information does not set the rules for private loans. If your loan is private, contact the lender or servicer shown on that account and follow its procedures for plan options, due dates, and automatic payments.
Compare repayment plans before you apply
Use Federal Student Aid’s Repayment Calculator and payment-preparation guidance to compare the options available for your own loans. Consider the trade-offs that matter to you: the monthly payment, how quickly you would repay, total amount paid, and interest paid. A lower monthly payment can mean paying more over time, so do not judge a plan by the first bill alone.
Think about what you are trying to optimize before comparing results. If you need room in your monthly budget, start by looking at estimated monthly payments, but also note the estimated total paid and interest. If paying the loan off sooner is your priority, compare payoff time as well as the monthly amount. If minimizing the overall cost matters most, look at total paid and interest rather than treating the smallest monthly bill as automatically best. The calculator helps compare options using your loan information; it does not guarantee approval, a particular bill, or savings.
Plan availability depends on federal loan type and when the loan was first disbursed. Do not assume a plan listed generally will be available for your loans or that a calculator estimate is an approval or a guaranteed bill. Use your loan information, then confirm your actual options and terms with the application or servicer. Eligibility and actual account terms cannot be determined from a general article; your loan type, disbursement history, account status, and any notice from your servicer matter.
Compare the available plans on the same measures rather than ranking one plan as best for everyone. A plan that produces a lower amount due each month may have a higher total cost over time. Conversely, the option that would repay fastest may not fit your current cash flow. Use the calculator to understand the trade-offs, then ask the servicer which plans you qualify for and what the confirmed payment and effective date would be.
How to apply for an IDR plan or ask about another plan
- Sign in to StudentAid.gov. Use the account linked to your federal loans and review the Dashboard for your servicer and current plan. Check the upcoming payment amount and due date so you can compare your current bill with any estimate or later confirmation.
- Compare your options. Run the Repayment Calculator with your loan information and compare monthly payment, payoff time, total paid, and interest. Keep in mind that the calculator does not decide eligibility or replace the application’s result.
- Submit the online IDR application if you want an IDR plan. Follow the application prompts and check its status afterward. Federal Student Aid says borrowers already on IDR may request a recalculation after a change in income or family size without waiting for annual recertification. If your income or family size has changed, you can ask for that recalculation rather than assuming you must wait until your next annual recertification.
- Contact your servicer for a different plan change. Use the servicer link on the Dashboard and ask which plans you qualify for and what application or action is required. Be specific about whether you want a different repayment plan or are trying to update a payment setting.
- Check the result in your account. Confirm the plan’s effective date, next payment amount, and due date before relying on the change. If the request is still pending, do not treat an estimate or submission confirmation as a new bill.
For an IDR request, the online IDR application is the route identified by Federal Student Aid. For other plan changes, the right next step may depend on the specific loan and account, so contact the servicer rather than assuming that an IDR application covers every kind of plan change. Ask what to submit, how to check the request’s status, and which payment amount remains due while it is being reviewed.

Federal Student Aid states: “You never have to pay a company to apply for a repayment plan or manage your federal student loans.” Use official federal and servicer channels rather than paying a company to submit a federal repayment-plan application. Direct federal servicer assistance is free; no paid company is required to apply for a federal repayment plan or manage federal loans. Details and current borrower guidance appear on the Federal Student Aid SAVE Plan borrower FAQ.

How to change your student loan due date or update Auto Pay
Sign in to your servicer’s account to enroll in or update Auto Pay, change bank-account details, and look for due-date options. If the site does not show the setting you need, contact the servicer and ask what dates and payment methods are available. These controls and choices vary by servicer. For example, MOHELA says borrowers can request a due date from the 1st through the 28th of the month; that range is specific to MOHELA, not a federal-wide rule. See MOHELA’s federal loan FAQs.
Before submitting an Auto Pay update, check which bank account is currently on file and make sure the details you enter are correct. If you already use Auto Pay and are changing a bank account or authorization, verify that the new information is reflected in the account after submission. Do not assume a changed plan, due date, or payment amount automatically updates every payment setting; check the servicer’s account for the active setting and scheduled withdrawal.
A due-date change is a request to move the date your payment is due, not a change to the repayment plan itself. Ask the servicer which dates it offers and when an approved change will take effect. Available dates differ by servicer: MOHELA’s example of the 1st through the 28th is useful only for MOHELA borrowers and should not be treated as a universal range. If a date you want is unavailable online, ask the servicer what alternatives it can offer.
Federal Student Aid’s payment-preparation guidance describes a temporary 1% Auto Pay interest-rate reduction for eligible federal borrowers enrolled by December 31, 2026, or already enrolled. The stated reduction runs through June 30, 2028. Eligibility and how the benefit applies to a particular account should be confirmed with the servicer; do not assume every borrower qualifies. Because this is a time-limited detail, check current guidance and your account rather than assuming it continues after the stated end date.
Verify the change before relying on it
A submitted request is not the same as a confirmed account change. Review the application status or servicer account and make sure the new plan and payment settings are in effect. Check these details together:

- The plan and its effective date.
- The next payment amount and due date.
- Whether the bank account on file is correct and Auto Pay is active.
- The scheduled withdrawal amount, particularly if the monthly payment has changed.
Continue making required payments as billed until the servicer confirms otherwise. MOHELA’s Auto Pay Authorization Agreement says submitting new bank details or an authorization does not remove the borrower’s duty to pay installments when due. A payment increase can also raise the Auto Pay withdrawal, so confirm the amount rather than assuming the old draft will remain unchanged.
Check the next bill against the confirmed plan and payment settings. A plan may have a different effective date from the day you submitted the request, and a due-date request or Auto Pay update may have its own status. If the account does not show the change you expected, contact the servicer and ask whether it has been processed, what amount is currently due, and whether you need to take another step. Until a change is confirmed, follow the payment instructions on the current bill.
Federal Student Aid’s SAVE guidance says borrowers must receive at least 21 days’ advance notice of a new monthly payment before the first due date under a new plan. Read any notice carefully, including the amount and due date, and compare it with the account. If a withdrawal is scheduled, verify the scheduled amount and bank details rather than assuming a previous Auto Pay amount will remain in place after a payment change.

If you received a notice about leaving SAVE
Federal Student Aid says the SAVE plan ended in March 2026. If you receive a servicer notice directing you to select another eligible plan, follow the dates in that notice and check the servicer inbox. The stated selection period is 90 days from the notice. If you do not select a plan within that period, a final 30-day notice follows; missing that final deadline results in automatic enrollment in a fixed plan. Because notice dates differ by borrower, your own notice—not a general calendar date—determines your deadlines.
Do not calculate a personal deadline from the month the plan ended or from another borrower’s notice. Check the date on your own servicer communication, note the selection deadline, and look for any later final notice. If you are unsure which plan you may select or what action the notice requires, contact your servicer promptly and ask about your eligible choices and the deadline attached to your account.
Federal Student Aid’s SAVE FAQ also says borrowers must receive at least 21 days’ advance notice of the new monthly payment before the first due date under a new plan. Read the notice carefully and verify the resulting payment and due date in the servicer account. The notice schedule and your exact account status are borrower-specific, so use the current servicer message as the source for your own next steps.

If you cannot afford the payment or the change is delayed
If a new plan’s estimated or confirmed payment is unaffordable, compare other plans with the calculator and contact your servicer about the options available for your loans and account. Eligibility depends on loan type and disbursement history, so neither a lower payment nor a particular plan can be promised without those details. If a request is pending, keep following the current bill until your servicer confirms a different amount or due date. For private loans, contact the private lender or servicer directly; federal repayment-plan rules and applications do not determine private-loan options.
If the difficulty is about timing rather than the amount, ask whether the servicer can offer a different due date. If it is about the amount, explain that you are seeking a plan with a payment you can manage and ask what eligible plans and application steps apply. You can also ask whether an existing IDR plan can be recalculated if your income or family size changed. These are different questions, and a due-date request by itself does not change the repayment plan or establish a lower monthly bill.
While you wait for an application or setting change to be confirmed, do not assume that silence means approval or that a pending request pauses the current bill. Check the status, preserve any notice or confirmation, and ask the servicer what amount remains due and when. Use the confirmed account information—not a calculator estimate or the amount you hope will apply—to decide what payment is currently required.
What to have ready when you contact the servicer
To make the conversation more useful, have your loan account information available and identify the change you want: a different repayment plan, an IDR recalculation after an income or family-size change, a due-date request, or an Auto Pay update. Ask which plans or dates are available, what step is required, when a confirmed change takes effect, and what amount is due in the meantime. Then check the account for the written confirmation and updated payment details.
It can also help to have the Dashboard information in front of you: the plan currently shown, the next payment amount and due date, the servicer name, and the loan details relevant to the request. If you are comparing plans, note what the calculator estimates for monthly payment, payoff time, total paid, and interest so you can ask about the differences. If you are changing payment settings, identify whether the request concerns the due date, bank-account information, Auto Pay enrollment, or the withdrawal amount.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I enroll in a different federal student loan repayment plan?
Sign in to StudentAid.gov, review your Dashboard and compare options with the Federal Student Aid Repayment Calculator. Use the online IDR application for an IDR plan. For another plan change, contact the servicer linked from your Dashboard and ask which plans you qualify for and what application or action is required.
Can I change my student loan payment if I cannot afford it?
For federal loans, compare available plans with the Repayment Calculator and contact your servicer about options for your loans and account. Eligibility depends on loan type and when the loan was first disbursed, so a lower payment or a particular plan cannot be guaranteed. Keep following the current bill until a different amount is confirmed.
How do I change my federal student loan due date?
Ask your loan servicer, which manages due-date settings and determines the available dates. Options vary: MOHELA, for example, says borrowers can request a date from the 1st through the 28th, but that range is not universal.
Where do I update student loan Auto Pay or bank details?
Use your servicer’s account to enroll in or update Auto Pay and bank-account details. After submitting a change, confirm that the account reflects the correct bank information, active Auto Pay status, and scheduled withdrawal amount. Continue paying as billed until the servicer confirms the change.
Do I have to wait until annual recertification to recalculate an IDR payment?
Federal Student Aid says a borrower already on IDR can request a recalculation after a change in income or family size without waiting for annual recertification. Check the online application and your servicer account for the request’s status and confirmed payment details.
What should I do if my servicer says I must leave SAVE?
Read and follow the deadline in your own servicer notice, and check the servicer inbox for later messages. Federal Student Aid says the selection period is 90 days from the notice, followed by a final 30-day notice; missing that final deadline results in automatic enrollment in a fixed plan. Deadlines vary by borrower, so do not use another person’s dates.
Does changing my repayment plan automatically change Auto Pay?
Do not assume so. Plan changes and payment settings are separate tasks. After a plan change, verify the next bill, due date, bank account, Auto Pay status, and scheduled withdrawal amount with your servicer.
The Bottom Line
For federal loans, use StudentAid.gov to identify your plan and servicer and compare options; apply online for IDR or ask the servicer about other plan changes. Make due-date and Auto Pay requests through the servicer, then confirm the effective date, next amount due, and withdrawal details before relying on a change. Private-loan borrowers should contact their own lender or servicer.
