Update both your résumé and LinkedIn with your actual end date, then refocus them on the roles you want next. You do not need to disguise a layoff or explain every employment gap on your résumé. The aim is a consistent, truthful record that makes your relevant experience easy for a hiring manager to find.
Start with a factual record and a target
Before editing, confirm your last day of employment, official title, employer name, and the accomplishments you can accurately describe. Choose one or two roles you plan to pursue so you can prioritize relevant experience instead of trying to turn your entire career history into a single pitch.
Use only work samples and performance information you are permitted to share. Do not take or disclose proprietary employer documents. If a result cannot be verified or disclosed appropriately, describe your contribution without inventing a metric or exposing confidential details.
Update your résumé for the next role
Make employment dates and details accurate
Enter the former role’s correct end date and keep employer names, titles, and dates consistent with LinkedIn. CareerOneStop recommends selecting work experience relevant to the job goal and aligning the résumé’s work history with its summary and skills sections as well as the LinkedIn profile. See CareerOneStop’s work-experience guidance.

Put relevant evidence first
Reorder or rewrite bullets so the most relevant work is easiest to spot. Explain what you did, the context or scope, and the outcome where you can substantiate it. Use terms from a job posting when they accurately describe your skills and experience; do not add unsupported qualifications or stuff the résumé with keywords.
Choose a format that tells the truth clearly
| Format | When it can help | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Chronological | When a clear work-history sequence is a strength and relevant experience is easy to follow. | It foregrounds employment history, so gaps are more visible. |
| Combination | When transferable skills deserve emphasis while you still want to show detailed employment history. | It still needs clear, accurate job details and dates. |
| Functional | When organizing around skills seems more useful than a timeline. | CareerOneStop warns some employers may misinterpret or reject this format in applicant tracking systems; it is not a guaranteed workaround for a gap. |
CareerOneStop discusses these choices in its résumé-formatting guidance. Keep the layout simple and readable; complex columns or graphics can be difficult for some systems to parse, and no format guarantees that an application will pass screening.
Handle a gap without inventing a story
Keep dates honest. CareerOneStop says a gap does not need an explanation on the résumé; if context would help, you can address it in a cover letter or interview. A layoff does not require you to describe yourself as a consultant, claim projects you did not do, or add an explanation to every profile section. See CareerOneStop’s special résumé tips.
Bring LinkedIn into line with your résumé
Update the former role’s end date, then check that the title, dates, achievements, skills, and professional direction agree across both records. Refresh your headline and About section to state the work you do, the problems you can help solve, or the roles you are targeting. Keep the language specific and grounded in your experience rather than apologizing for the layoff.

Add or refresh skills that genuinely match your work and target roles. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Workshop Participant Guide, version 6.0 Update 1, also recommends personalizing your LinkedIn profile URL and including it on your résumé.
LinkedIn’s Job Search Guide reports that members with a profile photo receive 21 times more profile views and up to nine times more connection requests, and that members listing five or more skills receive 27 times more contacts from employers and other LinkedIn members. These are LinkedIn-published figures; the guide’s publication year is not stated, and they are not independent findings or a promise of results for an individual profile. See LinkedIn’s Job Search Guide.

Choose your Open to Work visibility
LinkedIn’s settings let you choose among “All LinkedIn Members,” “Recruiters only,” and “Visible only to you.” All-member visibility includes people at your current company and adds the Open to Work photo frame. Recruiter-only is intended to limit who sees the signal, but it is not a privacy guarantee. LinkedIn Help states: “To protect your privacy, we take steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users who work at your current company from seeing your shared career interests, but we can’t guarantee complete privacy.” Check LinkedIn’s current Open to Work settings and visibility details, since interface labels can change.
If you enable the setting, specify job titles, locations, work arrangement, start date, and employment types that reflect what you would actually consider. A public post about the layoff is optional; choose whether to make one based on your comfort and circumstances, not on an expectation of a particular recruiter response.

Keep job-search updates separate from benefit eligibility
Changing a résumé or LinkedIn profile does not determine whether you qualify for unemployment benefits. In the United States, eligibility and work-search rules depend on state law and other requirements. Contact your state unemployment agency for the rules that apply to you. The U.S. Department of Labor also notes that health-plan continuation rights may apply to some people after termination; review your benefits documents and the Department’s termination and health-care benefits information.
