How to Update Your Bank Account for Social Security Direct Deposit

Use my Social Security for the fastest direct-deposit change when available. SSI recipients and people unable to update online need a different route, and an imminent payment is not guaranteed to go to the new account.

For retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, the fastest route is usually to sign in to your personal my Social Security account and use the direct-deposit update service. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), cannot complete the online change, or do not have a U.S. mailing address, the route may be different. Before changing anything, have your new bank’s routing and account numbers ready, and do not assume a payment close to its scheduled date will go to the new account.

The right next step depends on the benefit you receive, whether SSA offers the online service for your account, and whether you can complete identity verification. This guide explains the available routes, what to prepare, and what SSA’s stated processing time does—and does not—tell you about your next payment.

How can I change my Social Security direct deposit information?

Choose the route that fits your benefit and circumstances. The Social Security Administration (SSA) identifies the authenticated my Social Security service as the fastest way to change direct-deposit information when it is available. A participating bank may also submit the change, while a phone change requires a one-time identity code. SSI recipients have a separate assisted route.

Before choosing, check three things: what benefit or payment you are changing, whether you can sign in to my Social Security, and whether your bank offers Automated Enrollment (ENR). If the online service is not available or you cannot complete it, SSA says it will provide next steps. Do not treat the routes as interchangeable: the online service has benefit and account availability limits, a phone call requires the one-time code first, and not every bank supports ENR.

Route Who it may suit Identity and availability What to know
my Social Security online Retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries whose account offers the service Sign in to your personal account. The service is not available for every benefit type. SSA calls this the fastest way to make changes. If an online change cannot be completed, follow the next steps SSA provides.
Bank Automated Enrollment (ENR) Customers whose bank offers the service Ask the bank whether it participates; availability varies. Your bank may be able to submit the updated information to SSA.
Phone with a one-time code People who can sign in online to generate the code and then call SSA Generate the one-time code before calling and provide it to the representative. Calling by itself is not the specified phone-change process.
SSA office People who cannot use online services or generate the code SSA’s identity guidance directs them to prove identity in person. SSA says no appointment is needed if the visit is only to change direct deposit.
Call SSA or contact a local office SSI recipients and people who cannot update online SSI recipients use an assisted route rather than the online direct-deposit change service. Have the current routing number and account number available if you receive SSI.

Before you start: get the bank information and account access ready

Have the new account’s routing number and account number available before you begin. SSA’s SSI reporting guidance specifically advises SSI recipients to have the current routing and account numbers available when reporting a change. For an online update, use the numbers supplied by your bank and review them carefully before submitting. If the service asks you to identify the account type, select the one that matches the account you intend to use.

You will also need access to your personal my Social Security account for an online update or to generate the one-time code required for a phone change. If you do not yet have an account, SSA says new accounts can be created using Login.gov or ID.me. If you cannot create one, contact a local SSA office. For password or identity-proofing problems with your sign-in partner, SSA directs users to seek help from that partner.

It can help to decide which route you will use before entering any information. If you have retirement, survivors, or disability benefits and the update service appears in your account, begin online. If it is unavailable, note the next steps shown by SSA rather than repeatedly assuming the account is ready to accept the change. If you would rather work through your bank, ask specifically about SSA Automated Enrollment. If you need to call, first make sure you can sign in and generate a code.

Change it online through my Social Security

  1. Sign in to your personal my Social Security account.
  2. Open the direct-deposit update service and follow its prompts to enter the new bank information. SSA may not offer the online change for every benefit type; if you cannot complete it, follow the next steps SSA provides.
  3. Review the bank details carefully before submitting. Use the routing number and account number supplied by your bank, and make sure you select the correct account type if prompted.
  4. After submitting, keep in mind that SSA’s processing timeline is not the same as a promise about when a bank will post a payment or which account will receive a payment that is already near its scheduled date.

SSA describes the authenticated online service as the fastest way to make changes. Its direct-deposit page says, “This is the fastest way to make changes.” That makes it the natural first option when you receive an eligible benefit and your account offers the service, but it does not mean every beneficiary can complete every update online.

If you are unable to use the service, do not infer that your request has gone through. Follow SSA’s on-screen next steps or use another route that fits your situation, such as contacting a participating bank, generating the required one-time code for a representative call, or visiting an office for identity proofing. People without a U.S. mailing address, SSI recipients, and people unable to update online are among those SSA says should call or contact a local office.

Ask your bank about Automated Enrollment

Some banks can send updated direct-deposit information to SSA through Automated Enrollment (ENR). Call or visit your bank and ask whether it offers ENR for Social Security payments. Do not assume that your bank participates; SSA notes that availability varies. This route can be convenient if your bank offers the service, but it is not a universal substitute for SSA’s online or assisted routes.

When speaking with the bank, make clear that you are asking about updating Social Security direct deposit through Automated Enrollment, not merely changing information held by the bank. Bank participation in ENR varies, so confirm whether your bank offers it and what it needs from you. If it does not participate, use an SSA route instead.

Change it by phone with a one-time code

  1. Before calling SSA, sign in to or create a personal my Social Security account and generate a one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN.
  2. Call SSA at 1-800-772-1213.
  3. Give the code to the representative when asked, then provide the new bank information.

Calling without the required code is not the phone-change process described by SSA. The code is part of identity verification, not an optional shortcut. If you cannot use online services or generate the code, SSA’s identity guidance directs you to prove your identity at an office or arrange the deposit through your bank.

Do not give a one-time code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Generate it yourself through the SSA-linked process and provide it to the SSA representative as part of a call you initiated. The same caution applies to your account sign-in credentials: use the official account and identity routes rather than sharing credentials in response to an unsolicited request.

What if you cannot complete an online change?

Use the alternative route SSA gives you, contact a participating bank about ENR, call using a generated one-time code, or visit an office if you need in-person identity proofing. SSA says no appointment is needed when the sole purpose of the office visit is changing direct deposit.

If the issue is creating or accessing an account, distinguish between account access and the bank update itself. SSA says new accounts can be created with Login.gov or ID.me. If account creation is not possible, contact a local office; if the difficulty is a password or identity-proofing issue with a sign-in partner, seek help from that partner. If you cannot complete digital identity verification at all, the SSA identity guidance describes in-person proofing or arranging the deposit through your bank as alternatives.

What if I get SSI?

SSI direct-deposit changes are not currently available through SSA’s online direct-deposit update service. Call SSA or contact your local office instead. Have your current routing number and account number available, as SSA’s SSI reporting guidance advises.

SSI recipients can use My Profile to check their address and payment method and update a phone number, but those profile functions are not the same as changing the bank account for direct deposit. Seeing a payment method in a profile does not mean the direct-deposit update service is available for SSI. If you need to change the account, use the assisted route SSA identifies rather than assuming the general online bank-update steps apply.

If you also receive another Social Security benefit, confirm which payment you are changing and use the route SSA makes available for that benefit. SSA’s FAQ says retirement, survivors, and disability beneficiaries can change U.S. direct-deposit information online when the service is available, while SSI recipients cannot currently use that online change service. The benefit-type distinction matters even if the payments are associated with the same person.

How long does a bank change take?

SSA announced on March 18, 2025 that direct-deposit changes would be processed in one business day. That is the agency’s stated processing timeline, not a guarantee about when your bank will post a payment or which account will receive a payment already near its scheduled date. A processing time for the change and the posting of a particular benefit payment are different questions.

SSA’s identity guidance says beneficiaries continue receiving payments to the bank account already on record without taking identity-proofing action. The agency’s guidance states: “People will continue to receive their benefits on schedule to the bank account information in Social Security’s records without needing to prove identity.” This describes continued payment to the information SSA already has on record; it does not establish a universal cutoff for changing accounts before a payment date or guarantee which account will receive an imminent payment.

If a payment date is close, do not assume that a newly submitted change will affect that payment. The available SSA guidance does not give a universal deadline for when a change must be made to route a particular payment, and it does not promise that an upcoming payment will use either account in every case. If you need to clarify what to expect, check with SSA or your bank rather than relying on an assumed cutoff or posting date.

If a payment does not arrive

If your payment is missing on its due date, SSA’s retirement publication advises contacting your bank first because posting may be delayed there. Contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve the issue. This is especially important if you are unsure whether SSA has processed an update or whether the bank has posted a payment: the bank is the first contact for a payment that may be delayed on its side, while SSA can be contacted if that does not resolve the problem.

Why does SSA require identity verification?

SSA requires identity verification for a direct-deposit change. Its official routes are an authenticated personal my Social Security account, a phone call after generating a one-time code, or in-person identity proofing. A bank’s ENR service is another possible way to submit the updated information if your bank participates. Use these routes; do not share sign-in credentials or a one-time code with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SSA’s March 2025 statement said approximately 40 percent of Social Security direct-deposit fraud was associated with someone calling SSA to change bank information. Keep the scope of that statement in view: it concerns direct-deposit fraud associated with calls to SSA to change bank information. It is not a general fraud rate across all Social Security programs, nor should it be presented as a current audited estimate.

Identity verification may add a step, particularly for a phone request, but SSA says payments continue to the bank account it already has on record while a beneficiary has not taken identity-proofing action. That guidance is not permission to skip verification when requesting a change; it explains that continued benefits go to the existing record without an identity-proofing action. If you cannot complete the digital route, use the office or bank alternative SSA describes.

Does location or mailing address affect the process?

SSA says people with a U.S. mailing address can change U.S. direct-deposit information online if their benefit type and account allow it. People without a U.S. mailing address, SSI recipients, and people unable to update online should call SSA or contact a local office. This is a reason to check the account-specific service rather than assuming that the domestic online instructions apply to every beneficiary.

U.S. citizens can change an international address online, but that does not mean every international direct-deposit change follows the same process as a domestic bank-account update. People living abroad may need an appointment with a Federal Benefits Unit for other tasks. Contact SSA for instructions specific to your country and payment arrangement; do not assume that a U.S. bank update, an address change, and an international deposit change are the same transaction.

What if you do not have a bank account?

Direct Express is an electronic-payment alternative for people without a bank account. It is not necessary to consider it when you are simply replacing one existing bank account with another. If you do not have an account and need an electronic payment option, Direct Express may be relevant. SSA also describes waiver requests for rare exceptions to electronic payment; contact the agency if you believe an exception applies.

SSA’s June 2, 2026 blog says paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned undeliverable than electronic payments. The same blog attributes an average check-printing cost of $3.07 per check—approximately 20 times the cost of automated payments—to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. These figures concern paper checks compared with electronic payments; they do not change the steps for updating an existing bank account.

Quick route checklist

  • Retirement, survivors, or disability benefit and online service available: sign in to my Social Security, open the direct-deposit update service, enter and review the bank information, and follow the prompts.
  • Online service unavailable or unable to complete the update: follow SSA’s next steps, call or contact a local office as appropriate, or ask your bank whether it offers ENR.
  • Want to use the phone: generate the one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN before calling 1-800-772-1213.
  • Cannot use online verification or generate a code: SSA’s identity guidance says to prove identity at an office or arrange the deposit through your bank. No appointment is needed if the office visit is only to change direct deposit.
  • SSI: call SSA or contact a local office, and have the current routing and account numbers ready; do not use the general online update instructions as if the SSI service were available.
  • Payment due soon or late: do not assume which account will receive a near-term payment. If a payment is missing on its due date, contact the bank first, then SSA if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my Social Security direct deposit online?

Usually, if you receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits and the direct-deposit service is available in your personal my Social Security account. SSA calls this the fastest way to make changes. SSI direct-deposit changes are not currently available through that online service.

Can I change my Social Security direct deposit over the phone?

Yes. Generate a one-time code at ssa.gov/PIN by signing in to or creating a personal my Social Security account, then call 1-800-772-1213 and provide the code to the representative. SSA says people unable to use online services or generate the code should prove identity at an office or arrange the deposit through their bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can my bank update my direct deposit information for me?

Possibly. Ask whether your bank offers SSA Automated Enrollment (ENR); not all banks participate. If it does not offer ENR, use an SSA route that fits your benefit and identity-verification circumstances.

How long does a Social Security direct-deposit bank change take?

SSA announced on March 18, 2025 that changes would be processed in one business day. That is the agency’s stated processing timeline, not a guarantee about a bank’s posting time or which account will receive a payment already near its scheduled date.

What should I do if I receive SSI?

SSI direct-deposit changes are not currently available through the online direct-deposit update service. Call SSA or contact your local office, and have your current routing number and account number available.

What if I cannot create or access a my Social Security account?

SSA says new accounts can be created using Login.gov or ID.me. If you cannot create an account, contact a local SSA office. For password or identity-proofing issues with a sign-in partner, get help from that partner. If you cannot use online services or generate a phone code, SSA’s identity guidance describes office identity proofing or arranging the deposit through your bank.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my next payment go to the new account?

Do not assume so, particularly if the payment is close to its scheduled date. SSA’s one-business-day processing statement does not guarantee which account will receive a particular payment, and the available SSA guidance does not set a universal cutoff. Check with SSA or your bank if you need to clarify.

What should I do if my payment does not arrive on its due date?

SSA’s retirement publication advises contacting your bank first because posting may be delayed there. Contact SSA if the bank cannot resolve the issue.

Can I change an international direct-deposit account online?

The process is not necessarily the same as a domestic bank-account update. SSA says U.S. citizens can change an international address online, but people living abroad may need a Federal Benefits Unit appointment for other tasks. Contact SSA for instructions specific to your country and payment arrangement.

Do I need an appointment at an SSA office to change direct deposit?

SSA says no appointment is needed if the visit is only to change direct deposit. An office visit may be the identity-proofing route for someone who cannot use online services or generate the required one-time code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Direct Express to change my bank account?

No. Direct Express is an electronic-payment alternative for people without a bank account, not a required product for someone replacing one existing bank account with another.

The Bottom Line

For an eligible retirement, survivors, or disability benefit, start with my Social Security if the update service is available. If it is not, ask your bank about ENR, use the phone route only after generating the required one-time code, or contact an SSA office for identity proofing. SSI recipients should call SSA or contact a local office. SSA announced one-business-day processing, but that does not guarantee which account receives a payment already near its due date.
