To get the most money for an old iPad, sell it privately; to spend the least time, compare buyback quotes or use Apple Trade In. Apple Trade In generally provides Apple purchase credit or an Apple Gift Card, not unrestricted cash. Before choosing, identify the exact model, compare realistic net proceeds, and remove your Apple Account and Activation Lock before handing it over.
Identify the exact iPad before checking its value
“An old iPad” is not specific enough for a meaningful quote. Generation, screen size, storage, Wi-Fi or cellular capability, condition, and included accessories can all change what a buyer will pay.

- On the iPad, open Settings → General → About.
- Record the Model Name, Model Number, Capacity, and Serial Number. If needed, tap the model-number field to reveal the hardware number beginning with “A.”
- Note whether it is Wi-Fi-only or Wi-Fi + Cellular, and check the installed iPadOS version.
- Check available storage details at Settings → General → iPad Storage. On cellular models, inspect Settings → Cellular if available.
- Check for a school or employer profile at Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
Use the precise model and storage when requesting quotes or searching sale prices. Apple says its trade-in estimate requires the device’s serial number; its U.S. values are estimates, not guaranteed offers. Apple Trade In

Assess the device as a buyer would, not by how well it served you. A recent Pro or cellular model can retain substantial value, while an older base iPad may be worth little even if it still powers on.

- Physical condition: Look for cracks, dead pixels, deep scratches, a bent frame, engraving, or damage to the charging port.
- Functionality: Check charging, cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, Touch ID or Face ID, and any Apple Pencil functions you plan to advertise.
- Battery behavior: Note unexpected shutdowns or unusually rapid drain. Battery-health information varies by iPad model and iPadOS version; do not assume every iPad has the same Battery Health menu as an iPhone.
- Software and account status: Check Software Update at Settings → General → Software Update, and confirm you can remove Find My and any management profile.
- Cellular status: For a cellular model, find out whether it is carrier-unlocked and whether the plan or device is still tied to an account. Carrier unlocking and Apple Activation Lock are separate issues.
- Accessories: An Apple Pencil, keyboard, charger, or box may improve a bundle, but compare demand for the accessory separately before including it.
A device enrolled in a school or business management system may remain controlled by that organization after a consumer erase. Ask the administrator to release it before selling. If the iPad is locked to someone else’s Apple Account, do not advertise it as ready for normal use.
Choose a selling route that fits your priorities
| Route | Best fit | What you receive | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private marketplace, such as Swappa or eBay | Desirable, working models when you can handle listing and fulfillment | Buyer payment, subject to platform rules and any fees | More work, shipping or buyer interaction, and possible disputes. Swappa requires iPads to be free of Activation Lock before listing. Swappa’s Activation Lock guidance |
| Buyback service | A straightforward quote without finding an individual buyer | Payment according to the service’s current terms | The offer can be revised after inspection; check what happens if you decline it |
| Apple Trade In | Someone buying another Apple product who values convenience | Apple purchase credit or Apple Gift Card in applicable cases—not generally cash | Estimate is conditional on the model and the device matching its described condition |
| Facebook Marketplace or another local marketplace | Lower-value devices or sellers who want to avoid shipping | Payment agreed with the local buyer | Requires safe meet-up arrangements and payment verification |
| Recycle | Locked, unsafe, obsolete, or uneconomical-to-repair devices | Usually no resale proceeds | Check the recycler’s acceptance rules; Apple offers recycling for devices that do not qualify for trade-in credit |
Private sale: potentially more money, more responsibility
A technology-focused marketplace can connect a clearly identified iPad with buyers searching for that configuration. eBay may suit unusual models or bundles; check its current seller terms and fee information before listing. In either case, you are responsible for accurate condition details, packing, and following the platform’s current payment, shipping, and dispute rules. No marketplace guarantees the highest price.
Buyback services: get the full terms, not just the headline quote
A buyback service typically assesses your device, then inspects it after delivery. Back Market’s U.S. trade-in process begins with an assessment, asks for personal and contact information, and states that sellers must be at least 18. Back Market’s trade-in information

Before shipping, verify whether payment is cash, bank transfer, PayPal, gift card, or store credit; how long the quote remains valid; whether inspection can change it; who pays return shipping if you reject a revised offer; and whether the service accepts broken devices. Do not assume a quote is guaranteed or that every provider pays the same amount.
Apple Trade In: convenient credit, not a general cash sale
Apple’s U.S. Trade In page displayed estimates from $40 to $670 when checked in August 2026. Its category ceilings were up to $670 for iPad Pro, $445 for iPad Air, $220 for iPad, and $250 for iPad mini. These are maximum estimates, not typical values or promised payments for a particular iPad. Exact value depends on the device and market timing. Apple may reassess condition, and very old or severely damaged devices may not qualify for credit. In the relevant upgrade workflow, Apple says a mailed trade-in should arrive within 14 days of receiving the replacement device. Check the current quote and instructions before committing. Local sale: skip shipping, but verify payment and meet safely
A local deal can make sense when shipping costs would consume much of the proceeds. Arrange to meet in a public, well-lit place, preferably one designated for marketplace exchanges. Keep communication and transaction records on-platform when possible. Do not hand over the iPad based on a payment screenshot; confirm the funds in your own bank or payment app before transferring it.

Set a realistic asking price
Build a range from three references: Apple’s trade-in estimate, at least one buyback quote, and completed or sold marketplace listings for the same model, storage, connectivity, and comparable condition. An active listing is only an asking price; it does not show that anyone paid it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Compare like with like: model generation, screen size, storage, Wi-Fi or cellular, and included accessories.
- Adjust for cracks, dead pixels, heavy wear, a bent chassis, engraving, battery problems, missing accessories, and defects in buttons, ports, biometrics, or audio.
- For cellular models, account for uncertain carrier status. State whether “unlocked” means carrier-unlocked or Activation-Lock-free; those are not interchangeable.
- Subtract marketplace fees, shipping, packing materials, and the time or travel involved. Include the possibility of a return or dispute in your decision.
Expected net proceeds = likely sale price − marketplace fees − shipping − packaging − expected refund or dispute risk. For a local sale, subtract travel and time costs, and consider payment risk. Price based on what comparable devices actually sold for—not the original retail price or sentimental value. If a platform allows negotiation, you can list above your minimum acceptable net amount; for fixed-price sales, choose a defensible price from the comparisons.
Decide whether a repair will pay for itself
Do not replace a screen or battery automatically just to sell. Compare the likely as-is price with the expected sale price after repair, then subtract the repair quote, selling costs, and the value of your time. Consider the likelihood of another failure and whether the part and repair come with a meaningful warranty. A repair may be more defensible for a recent, valuable Pro than for an older base model, but the exact model and provider quote determine the economics.

Prepare the iPad and remove your personal data
Back up what you want to keep
Back up through iCloud or a computer, or transfer data to a replacement iPad. Confirm that important photos, contacts, notes, files, messages, and app data are available where you expect them before erasing. Apple recommends backing up before selling, giving away, or trading in an iPad. Apple’s iPad handoff guide
Disconnect accounts, plans, and management
- If you need listing photos, take them before erasing. Avoid showing personal information or the full serial number publicly.
- Remove the physical SIM from a cellular iPad and cancel or transfer its cellular plan. Handle eSIM service with the carrier as needed.
- Sign out of iCloud and the iTunes Store and App Store as directed by Apple. Remove the device from school, employer, or business management through the administrator.
- Turn off Find My: Settings → [your name] → Find My → Find My iPad. Authenticate if prompted. Turning off Find My removes Activation Lock. Apple’s Find My guidance
Erase and check the setup screen
- Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPad → Erase All Content and Settings.
- Follow the prompts and enter your Apple Account password if requested. Apple says this erases personal content and turns off Find My and Activation Lock; erasing the iPad does not delete content stored in iCloud. Apple’s erase instructions
- After the erase, confirm the iPad reaches the initial setup or “Hello” screen. Do not sign back in merely to test it.
The buyer should not see your account, a passcode screen, a request for your Apple Account password, or a remote-management screen. Apple’s general preparation steps are at Sell, give away, or trade in your iPad.
Recommended Free Tools
Write an accurate listing buyers can assess
Put the details that determine compatibility and condition in the title or first lines. For example: “iPad Air [generation], [screen size], [storage], Wi-Fi + Cellular, [condition].” Use the exact model name you recorded rather than just “iPad Air” or “iPad Pro.”
Best Value
- State model and generation, model number, storage, screen size, and Wi-Fi or cellular capability.
- For cellular models, state carrier status only if known; do not use “unlocked” without specifying whether you mean carrier-unlocked or Activation-Lock-free.
- Describe battery behavior carefully, and list any tested functions or known defects.
- Describe screen, back, and frame condition, including cracks, scratches, dents, and engraving.
- Say whether cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, charging port, and Touch ID or Face ID work, based on what you checked.
- List included accessories and whether a charger is original or third-party. Say whether the device is used, refurbished, parts-only, or not working.
- Photograph the front with the screen on, the back, all sides, ports, and each defect in clear light. Do not publish the full serial number.
Avoid “like new” if there are visible marks, “works perfectly” if you have not checked key functions, or “factory reset” unless the device actually reaches setup. Disclose defects plainly; a precise listing reduces mismatched expectations and disputes.
Ship or hand over the iPad safely
For a shipped sale or trade-in
- Record the serial number privately and photograph the device’s condition, including defects, immediately before packing.
- Use a sturdy corrugated box with cushioning so the iPad cannot shift. Follow the recipient’s current packing and shipping instructions.
- Use tracked shipping; consider insurance for a valuable model, and retain the receipt and tracking details until the transaction is closed.
- Do not ship an iPad with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery. Apple’s trade-in guidance warns against shipping such devices. Apple Trade In shipping guidance
- For Apple’s applicable upgrade mailing workflow, meet its 14-day receipt window after receiving the replacement device.
For a local handoff
- Choose a public, well-lit meeting point and tell someone where you are going.
- Reject overpayment requests and never send a “difference” back to a buyer.
- Verify payment yourself in the relevant app or account; do not rely on screenshots, emails, or pressure to hand over the device before funds are settled.
- Keep the listing and transaction messages until the sale is complete.
If the sale goes wrong or the iPad cannot be sold
Activation Lock is still on
If you still have the iPad, sign in with the original Apple Account and turn off Find My, then erase the device. If it has already been sold, use Find Devices at iCloud.com/find, select the iPad, erase it, then select Remove This Device. If it is offline, remote erasure begins when it next connects. Apple says removing the device after erasure removes Activation Lock so another person can activate it. Apple’s remote removal steps
If you forgot the Apple Account password, resolve account recovery before handing over the device. Do not pay an unofficial service that claims to bypass Activation Lock; a buyer cannot legitimately bypass it.

Compare the new offer with the return-shipping cost, current private-sale value, time needed to relist, and whether the original condition description was accurate. Keep the inspection and shipping records, and decide using net proceeds rather than the initial headline quote.
The iPad will not power on
Try a known-good cable and adapter, allow an extended charging period, inspect the port without inserting metal, and use the model-appropriate force-restart procedure. If the battery is swollen or damaged, stop handling or shipping it and seek appropriate service or recycling guidance.
The device is locked, managed, or uneconomical to repair
Do not list an iPad as ready to use while Activation Lock or organizational management remains. Ask the account owner or institution to release it. If you cannot remove the lock, the organization will not release it, it has little parts value, or repairs exceed likely resale proceeds, recycling is usually the more responsible option. Apple accepts some devices for recycling when they do not qualify for trade-in credit; check its current eligibility. Apple Trade In and recycling
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Want the highest potential proceeds? Compare sold listings and consider Swappa or eBay for an identifiable, functional, desirable model; accept the work and transaction risk.
- Want a simple quote? Compare a buyback offer with Apple’s estimate and read the inspection, payout, and return terms.
- Buying another Apple product? Apple Trade In may be convenient if Apple credit or a Gift Card works for you.
- Want local payment without shipping? Use a local marketplace only if you can meet safely and independently verify payment.
- Locked, unsafe, or uneconomical to repair? Resolve account or management ownership if possible; otherwise use an appropriate recycling route.
