Take eligible empties to a participating retailer or authorized redemption center in the same deposit program. There is no nationwide rule that every bottle or can earns money, and the exact refund depends on where you bought it and what the container holds.
Start by checking whether the container has a refundable deposit
Look for a deposit or refund marking and check the rules for the state or local program where the beverage was purchased. A container that is recyclable is not automatically worth cash: curbside or public-bin recycling generally does not pay you directly. In California, for example, the California Redemption Value (CRV) is added to the beverage price and can be reclaimed through a certified recycling center or participating retailer; an organization collecting containers from public or curbside bins claims the CRV instead. CalRecycle’s consumer guidance explains the state system.
Deposit rules are territorial. New York requires an appropriate New York refund label and bars knowingly redeeming containers on which no New York deposit was paid. Michigan likewise prohibits bringing in out-of-state containers for a Michigan deposit refund if no Michigan deposit was paid. Do not assume a container bought elsewhere qualifies just because it looks identical to a locally sold one. New York’s Bottle Bill guidance and Michigan’s deposit FAQ set out those state-specific rules.
Check the drink, size, material and condition
Programs may restrict which beverages and packages qualify. New York’s list includes specified carbonated drinks, beer and malt beverages, mineral water, and wine products, in sealed glass, metal, aluminum, steel or plastic containers under one gallon, subject to the state statute. Those categories are not a nationwide eligibility list. New York also advises returning containers clean and reasonably intact, rather than crushed or corroded. Consult the applicable program page before sorting a large load.

Keep containers empty and recognizable until you have checked local requirements. Barcodes help Michigan reverse vending machines identify eligible containers, so leaving them uncrushed can make a machine return easier. Michigan’s FAQ says retailers must accept qualifying crushed containers if they can still be identified. At a recycling center that pays by weight, keep different materials separate and free of non-eligible items; CalRecycle warns that mixed loads containing non-CRV material may be rejected or paid only at scrap value.
Choose a redemption location and confirm its rules
Depending on the program, returns may go to retailers, registered redemption centers, staffed recycling facilities or reverse vending machines (RVMs). New York directs customers to stores selling the same type and brand or to registered redemption centers. California lists certified centers, participating retailers and some RVMs. Use the state or local program’s location directory, then check the individual site’s hours, accepted materials, payment method and quantity limits before bringing a large load.

Compare practical options on the details that affect your return: whether the site accepts your container type and brand, whether it pays per container or by weight, how payment is issued, any transaction or daily limits, and whether staff can process a qualifying container the machine rejects. A convenient machine is not the only possible channel where staffed returns are available.
What California pays—and how its limits work
California’s CalRecycle consumer page, accessed October 8, 2026, lists CRV at 5 cents for listed containers under 24 ounces and 10 cents for listed containers of 24 ounces or more. It lists 25 cents for specified wine and distilled-spirits packages. These are California rates, not a national payout schedule; check CalRecycle’s live page for current eligibility and values before returning containers.

California offers two ways to calculate payment. A customer may request payment per container for up to 50 CRV containers of each material type in a transaction, or request payment by weight subject to daily limits. The stated daily weight limits are 100 pounds each for aluminum and plastic and 1,000 pounds for glass. These rules apply to California redemption, not to other states.
What to do if a container is odd-shaped or a machine is out of order
The machine rejects an eligible container
Do not assume rejection means the container has no refund value. Ask an employee whether the location can process it manually or direct you to another authorized site. The available remedy depends on local rules and the retailer’s role in the program.

The container does not fit the machine
Ask the site whether a staffed counter or redemption center accepts that package. A reverse vending machine is one return method, not a universal requirement. If the package is not eligible under the local program, use the recycling service available in your area instead of expecting a deposit refund.
The machine is full or broken
Ask staff about manual redemption or an alternate authorized location. New York says a dealer’s redemption obligation remains if its machine is full or broken. For New York RVM scrip or receipts, the dealer must allow exchange for legal tender without requiring another purchase for at least 60 days. These protections describe New York rules; other states may handle machine failures differently. Return the containers and collect your refund
- Check the marking and purchase location. Confirm that the container and beverage qualify under the deposit program where you bought the drink.
- Prepare the load. Empty containers, keep them recognizable and avoid crushing them until you know the local rules. Separate materials if the site pays by weight or requires sorting.
- Confirm the location. Find a participating retailer or authorized center through the relevant state or local directory. Verify hours, accepted containers, payment method and limits.
- Submit the containers. Use the machine or staffed counter. If a qualifying container is rejected or the machine is unavailable, ask staff about the local manual-return option.
- Collect and redeem any receipt. Follow the site’s instructions for exchanging a voucher or receipt; the right to cash or another payment method depends on local rules.
How deposit returns help—and what they do not mean
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says beverage-container litter has fallen 70% since its Returnable Container Act took effect. That is an agency-reported New York result, not a nationwide measurement. New York’s Bottle Bill of Rights also states: “THE RIGHT to get your deposit refund in cash, without proof of purchase.” This describes New York’s rules and should not be treated as a promise about every state.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy quotes its statute as requiring a dealer to accept an empty returnable container “of any kind, size, and brand sold or offered for sale by that dealer” and pay its full refund value in cash. That obligation is part of Michigan’s program, not a general U.S. rule. For your own return, the controlling details are the program where the drink was purchased and the current rules of the location where you plan to redeem it.
