How to Turn Off Personalized Ads on Facebook and Instagram

Adjust Facebook and Instagram ad personalization in Accounts Center, review connected profiles, and learn what these settings do not change.

You can change Meta’s ad-personalization settings in Settings → Accounts Center → Ad preferences. Review the Facebook and Instagram profiles connected there, then adjust the ad-experience and data-use choices your account displays. These controls affect how ads are personalized; they are not a universal switch to stop ads from appearing.

Where to find Facebook and Instagram ad preferences

  1. Open Facebook or Instagram and go to Settings.
  2. Select Accounts Center, then Ad preferences.
  3. Check the accounts and profiles listed before changing anything. Accounts in the same Accounts Center may share information across Meta services to personalize experiences, including ads. Meta describes Accounts Center as the place to manage ad preferences for connected accounts: About Accounts Center.
  4. Review the available ad-experience and data-use controls, and choose the less-personalized options that are actually shown for your account.

Labels and options can differ by country, account, device and app version. If you do not see the same path, search Settings for “Ad preferences” or “Accounts Center,” and follow the labels in your account. Meta’s help documentation does not establish one click-by-click path for every interface.

Which setting changes ad personalization?

Activity from other businesses

Look for Activity from other businesses, or the corresponding label currently displayed in your account. Meta announced on June 9, 2026, that it was expanding this control, previously called “Activity information from ad partners,” and discontinuing “Your activity off Meta technologies” in rollout markets. The setting concerns whether Meta uses activity information that other businesses send it to personalize ads and other content. Meta said it was not collecting new data as part of this update: Meta’s announcement about activity from other businesses.

Meta says that if you decline this use, it will not use that information to show you more relevant ads or other content. That is a limit on one source of personalization, not a promise that you will stop seeing ads. The exact control and its availability depend on the account’s rollout.

Ad experience choices

Use the ad-experience choice presented in Ad preferences to adjust personalization where available. Some choices may address how relevant ads and content are, rather than turning advertising off altogether. Read the description shown beside the control before selecting it; the available wording and options are not identical for every user.

What these changes do—and do not do

  • They can reduce personalization. Disabling a data-use option can prevent Meta from using that particular activity information to make ads or content more relevant.
  • They do not necessarily remove ads. Personalization controls are not the same as an ad-free account. Meta’s June 2026 explanation describes reduced use of information for relevance, not the end of advertising.
  • They apply to the profiles and controls shown. Check which accounts are connected in Accounts Center and review the settings displayed for them.
  • They do not mean Meta stopped receiving the information described in the June 2026 update. Meta said the update changes how it uses information businesses already send; it said it was not collecting new data as part of that change.

Options for users in the European Union

Meta announced in November 2024 that people in the EU could choose free Facebook and Instagram with less personalized ads, alongside a paid subscription for use without ads. This is a regional choice, not a setting that should be expected in every country or on every account. The announcement does not establish that every EU user in 2026 sees the same wording or options, so rely on the choices currently presented in your account: Meta’s Europe announcement. Do not treat older subscription-price details in that announcement as current pricing.

If you cannot find the control

  • Open Accounts Center from the Facebook or Instagram app you use and look under Ad preferences.
  • Search Settings for the displayed name of the option; Meta has announced changes to the names and organization of activity controls.
  • Check the connected profiles and account context. A control or regional ad-experience choice may not be available to every account.
  • If an option is absent, do not assume another setting has the same effect. Meta’s published material does not enumerate every account’s exact controls or rollout status.

Does Meta use my microphone to personalize ads?

Changing ad preferences is separate from the question of whether Meta listens to conversations. Meta’s Privacy Center says it does not use a device microphone for ads unless the user has given permission and is actively using a feature that requires the microphone: Meta Privacy Center. Microphone permissions are managed through the device’s operating-system settings, not by the Accounts Center ad-personalization controls.
