Travel + Leisure’s 2025 plan shows how to maximize PTO around U.S. federal holidays: use 11 workdays of leave to create separate breaks adding up to 44 days away from work over the year. Those 44 days are not one continuous vacation, and the total depends on your employer observing the relevant holidays and approving each request. The dates below are historical now; use them as a 2025 example, not as a current-year calendar.
How the 11-day plan adds up to 44 days away
The schedule was published by Travel + Leisure on October 15, 2024. Its 44-day figure is a planning total across multiple breaks, not an independently measured statistic or 44 consecutive days off. It assumes a conventional Monday-to-Friday workweek, that the named holidays are days off for you, and that your employer approves the requested PTO. See the original 2025 schedule.
The suggested calendar is shown below. “PTO” below means a workday requested off; a holiday or weekend in the break is not itself a PTO day.

The listed weekday PTO dates through Veterans Day total 10 days, counting the two New Year’s dates; Thanksgiving and Christmas depend on whether those dates are already nonworking days and on the alternatives used. The source presents 11 PTO days as its headline planning total, not as a universal leave entitlement. Check your own work calendar before treating the total as usable leave.

Which 2025 holidays the schedule uses
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) lists these 2025 federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1; Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 20; Washington’s Birthday, Monday, February 17; Memorial Day, Monday, May 26; Juneteenth, Thursday, June 19; Independence Day, Friday, July 4; Labor Day, Monday, September 1; Columbus Day, Monday, October 13; Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11; Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 27; and Christmas, Thursday, December 25. OPM also lists Inauguration Day on January 20 for applicable federal employees in the Washington, D.C., area; it is not an additional generally applicable holiday for every worker. OPM’s federal holiday calendar is the reference for federal dates and federal employees.
Federal holiday dates do not determine every private employer’s closure calendar. OPM says most federal employees work Monday through Friday and generally observe a holiday on Monday when it falls on Sunday, or Friday when it falls on Saturday. Those federal employee rules do not require private employers to close or provide paid holiday leave.

What to check before making a similar plan
- Start with your employer’s holiday calendar. Confirm which listed holidays are paid days off for your role and location, and whether any holiday is observed on a different date.
- Count only workdays that would otherwise be scheduled. Weekends and holidays can extend a break, but do not count as PTO unless you normally work those days.
- Confirm your leave balance and request rules. Check approval deadlines, staffing restrictions, blackout periods, and whether unused leave can be carried forward. The schedule does not guarantee approval.
- Recalculate for the year you are planning. Holiday weekdays change from year to year. The 2025 dates above should not be copied into a later year’s calendar without verification.
- Compare convenience with cost. Longer holiday weekends can make travel easier to schedule, but the source does not quantify airfare, lodging, or crowding; compare actual dates and prices before booking.
Is paid holiday or vacation time guaranteed?
No general federal requirement guarantees paid time off for private-sector workers. The U.S. Department of Labor states: “The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays (federal or otherwise).” Your employer’s policies, contract, or applicable state or local law may affect your situation, so check the rules that apply to your job.
