How to Transfer Money From a Credit Card to PayPal: What Works in the U.S.

PayPal U.S. lists bank accounts and eligible debit cards—not credit cards—for adding money to a balance. Card-funded payments to others are a separate flow and may carry PayPal or issuer fees.

In the U.S., PayPal’s instructions for adding money to your balance do not list credit cards as a funding option. They list a confirmed bank account or an eligible debit card instead. You may be able to use a credit card as the payment method when sending money to someone, but that is a separate transaction—not a way to load your PayPal balance—and fees may apply.

Can you add money to your PayPal balance from a credit card?

PayPal’s U.S. instructions for adding money to a balance list a confirmed bank account or an eligible Visa or Mastercard debit card. They do not list a credit card as an add-money method. The options shown can depend on your account, and PayPal says limits apply. Check the live options and limit in your account before starting. PayPal’s U.S. help page has the current steps. [c001]

That means “transfer money from a credit card to PayPal” can describe two different actions: adding funds to your own balance, or paying another person through PayPal with a card. The second may be available even when the first is not.

How to add money to your PayPal balance using a supported method

In the PayPal app

  1. Open PayPal and tap the Me tab.
  2. Tap Add Money.
  3. Choose an available bank or debit card option.
  4. Enter the amount and select one of the transfer options shown.

On the PayPal website

  1. Open Wallet.
  2. Click Transfer Money.
  3. Choose Add money from your bank or debit card.
  4. Enter the amount and select an offered method.

PayPal says additions from a bank account usually take up to five business days; eligible debit-card additions are typically available in seconds. These are PayPal’s stated timing estimates, not a guarantee for every transfer. Your account’s eligible methods and limits apply. [c001]

How to pay someone with a credit card through PayPal

If your goal is to send a payment rather than build your PayPal balance, choose the recipient and select your credit card as the payment method if PayPal offers it for that transaction. Review the amount and any fee PayPal displays before confirming. The payment goes to the recipient; it does not first add money to your balance.

PayPal’s U.S. consumer fee schedule lists a fee for domestic personal transactions funded by card: 2.90% plus a fixed fee, subject to the schedule’s minimum and maximum. The schedule, last updated May 19, 2026, lists additional percentage-based fees for international personal transactions. The exact charge depends on the transaction category and applicable terms, so check PayPal’s current U.S. fee schedule and the fee shown before sending. These figures apply to the listed personal-transaction categories, not to every PayPal payment. [c002]

Could your card issuer charge a cash-advance fee?

Possibly. PayPal’s U.S. User Agreement says, “If you use your credit card as the payment method when sending money, you may also be charged a cash-advance fee by your card issuer.” Whether a particular transaction is treated that way is determined by the issuer, and PayPal cannot guarantee your card account’s classification. Check your issuer’s terms or ask the issuer before sending if this fee would matter to you. [c003]

PayPal’s Help Center separately says, “When you use your debit or credit card, you won’t be charged a cash advance fee for sending money for goods or services.” That statement is limited to payments for goods or services; it is not a blanket assurance for every card-funded transfer or for how the card issuer will treat it. What if the options or fees look different?

  • No credit card appears under Add Money: PayPal’s U.S. add-money instructions do not list credit cards as a balance-funding method. Use a bank account or eligible debit card if offered.
  • Your debit card or bank account is not offered: Check that the funding source is linked and eligible, then review the choices in the live transfer screen. Account limits and availability can affect what appears.
  • You are sending money to another person: Treat this as a payment, not a balance transfer. Confirm the payment method, recipient, and displayed fee before you submit.
  • You are outside the U.S.: The steps and fee information here are U.S.-specific. PayPal says features can vary by market; check the local PayPal site and the options in your account.
