How to Transfer Crypto Safely

Match the receiving wallet’s asset and network before sending crypto. Check the address, required memo or tag, amount and fees, then keep the transaction ID to track it.

To transfer crypto, get the receiving wallet or exchange’s deposit address and confirm the exact asset and network it supports. At the sending service, choose that same asset and network, enter the address and any required memo or tag, then review the amount and fees before confirming. For an unfamiliar destination, a small test transfer can help verify the route.

Before you send: confirm the destination details

Start with the recipient’s current, asset-specific deposit instructions. A matching ticker or a familiar-looking address does not prove that two services support the same asset on the same network. The network selected by the sender must be supported by the receiving wallet or exchange; if you cannot verify that, stop and ask the receiving service for guidance. See IG Help Centre UK’s transfer instructions and its network-selection guidance for examples of these checks.

  • Asset: Confirm the exact cryptocurrency the recipient can accept.
  • Network: Confirm the receiving destination supports the network you will select when sending.
  • Address: Copy the complete address from the receiving service and verify it against the intended destination.
  • Memo or tag: Check whether the recipient requires an additional identifier, and copy it exactly.

How to transfer crypto, step by step

Labels and screens vary by provider, but the sequence is generally the same whether you are moving crypto between exchange accounts, from an exchange to a self-custody wallet, or between self-custody wallets.

  1. Open the receiving destination’s deposit instructions. Select the exact cryptocurrency and note its supported network, deposit address, and any required memo or tag. Use the receiving service’s instructions current at the time you send.
  2. Open the send or withdrawal flow at the sending service. Choose the same cryptocurrency and the matching network. Do not choose a network simply because it is available or its name seems familiar.
  3. Enter the destination address. Copy and paste the address or scan the recipient’s QR code, then check the full address and the transaction summary before proceeding.
  4. Enter the memo or tag if required. Some hosted exchanges use a shared wallet address and rely on a separate identifier to credit a deposit to the right customer account. Requirements depend on the asset and receiving service; leaving out a required value can prevent the deposit from being credited. See Coinbase Help’s destination-tag and memo guidance and its explanation of a pending deposit when a memo is missing.
  5. Enter the amount and review the charges. Check the amount the recipient is expected to receive and the total shown before approval. A network fee and a provider’s own charges or withdrawal rules are distinct possibilities; fees vary by network and service.
  6. Consider a small test transfer. For a new destination or uncertain instructions, sending a small amount first can help check that the route and any memo or tag work. Coinbase Help recommends a small test send when users are unsure about tag or memo details. A successful test does not make a later send risk-free: recheck every detail for each transfer.
  7. Review and confirm. Read the final transaction summary, including asset, network, destination, amount, memo or tag, and fee. Confirm only when these match the receiving instructions.
  8. Save the transaction ID or hash. After the transfer is broadcast, keep its transaction ID or hash so you can check its status and provide a reference to support if needed.

What changes by transfer route?

Route What to verify Who controls the keys after receipt?
Exchange to exchange Recipient’s supported asset and network, deposit address, any memo or tag, displayed fees, and the receiving exchange’s crediting process. The receiving exchange controls the wallet keys.
Exchange to self-custody wallet Wallet support for the exact asset and network, the destination address, displayed fees, and that you control the receiving wallet. You control the wallet keys.
Self-custody wallet to self-custody wallet Recipient wallet support for the same asset and network, the destination address, any network fee, and transaction details shown before signing. The recipient of the transfer controls the destination wallet keys.

Whether the recipient is an exchange or a wallet you control, the core check is the same: both ends must support the chosen asset and network. An exchange may also require a memo or tag and may have its own deposit-crediting process.

Fees, confirmation and how long a transfer takes

A transfer may incur a blockchain network fee, and a provider may impose separate charges or withdrawal rules. Review what the sending service displays rather than assuming a universal fee. Timing also varies: network congestion and provider review or crediting procedures can affect when a transfer completes. There is no single completion estimate that applies to every asset, network, and service. IG’s transfer guidance distinguishes on-chain processing and charges, while Robinhood’s transfer guidance also discusses network fees.

If a crypto transfer is delayed or missing

  1. Check the sending service’s status. Confirm whether it shows the transfer as sent or still pending.
  2. Look up the transaction ID or hash. If the transfer has been broadcast, use the relevant network explorer to check its status.
  3. Recheck the receiving details. Confirm the asset, network, destination address, and any required memo or tag against the recipient’s instructions.
  4. Contact the relevant provider. If the funds have not appeared, give the sending or receiving service the transaction ID or hash and the other transaction details it requests. Do not assume a provider can reverse or recover a confirmed transfer.

Network congestion or a provider’s review can delay completion, so a delay alone does not establish that funds are lost. IG’s crypto-transfer troubleshooting guidance explains how a transaction reference can help with support enquiries.

Why a transfer can be irreversible

Once a blockchain transaction is confirmed, it is generally irreversible. An incorrect address, incompatible network, or omitted required tag can mean funds are lost or not credited, and recovery is not guaranteed. Check every field before confirming, and never disclose a seed phrase or private key to someone claiming to help with a transfer.

Is a hardware wallet necessary?

No. A hardware wallet is optional and relevant to people who choose self-custody; it is not required to transfer crypto between exchange accounts. Ledger describes hardware wallets as devices that keep private keys offline and let users review and sign transactions, but using one does not prevent mistakes such as choosing the wrong asset, network, or address. See Ledger Academy’s overview of hardware wallets.
