In the U.S., Apple currently lists the 128GB iPhone 16 from $699, with a displayed trade-in range of $35–$695 as of August 2026. That range is not a guaranteed value for your phone: the exact credit depends on its model, storage, carrier status, and condition.
Apple Trade In is usually the simplest option. A carrier promotion may provide a larger total discount, but often through monthly bill credits and a qualifying plan. A private sale may produce more cash, but requires more work and creates buyer, payment, and shipping risks.

Choose the right way to trade in your old iPhone
| Route | Best for | Main benefit | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In | Convenience and a simple Apple purchase | Credit toward an iPhone 16 or an Apple Gift Card | The offer may be lower than a private sale |
| Carrier promotion | Existing customers willing to keep a qualifying plan | Potentially the largest promotional discount | Credits may take many months and stop if you leave or change the offer |
| Private sale | Unlocked, working phones in good condition | Potentially higher gross proceeds | Listing, payment, buyer, fee, and shipping risks |
| Recycling | Devices with no meaningful resale value | Responsible disposal | No payment |
“Up to” promotional amounts are not the cash value of every old iPhone. Compare the total financial result, not just the largest headline number.
Check what your old iPhone is worth
Use the Apple Trade In estimator and select the exact iPhone model and storage capacity. Answer the condition questions conservatively, then save a screenshot of the estimate. Apple says the final value can change after inspection if the device does not match the description.

- The exact model and storage capacity.
- Whether the phone is unlocked or carrier-locked.
- Screen, back-glass, body, and water damage.
- Battery and display condition.
- Whether Face ID or Touch ID, cameras, buttons, speakers, microphones, and charging work.
- Whether Find My and Activation Lock can be removed.
- Whether the phone is still being financed.
Apple’s U.S. purchase page showed the iPhone 16 128GB from $699 and a displayed trade-in range of $35–$695 in August 2026. Prices and estimates change, so treat those figures as dated reference points rather than a permanent price list. See the current iPhone 16 purchase page for the live price.
Apple, a carrier, or a private sale?
Apple Trade In
Apple is generally the easiest choice if you want credit applied to the iPhone 16, in-store assistance, or recycling for a device that has little value. You can trade in online or have an Apple Specialist inspect the phone in person. The in-store value may differ from an online estimate.
Carrier trade-in
Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile may offer larger promotional discounts than Apple. However, these offers commonly require a qualifying postpaid plan, activation or upgrade, an eligible trade-in, and monthly bill credits. “Free” usually means the device cost is offset over a defined credit period, not that you receive the full amount immediately.
Before choosing a carrier offer, calculate:
- The required plan price compared with the plan you would otherwise keep.
- Taxes, activation, upgrade, and other fees.
- How many months the credits last.
- What happens if you cancel, switch plans, or pay off the installment early.
- Whether the carrier requires a particular condition, storage, or trade-in deadline.
Apple’s carrier-offer document describes qualification, activation, and monthly-credit structures, but the exact terms are offer-specific. Check the live offer from Verizon, AT&T, or your carrier before ordering.
Private sale
A private sale can make sense for an unlocked, fully working iPhone in good condition. Swappa’s page crawled in August 2026 showed an average iPhone 16 price of about $638 and a displayed trade-in figure of about $320, but those figures vary by model, storage, carrier, condition, date, and selling costs. They are not guaranteed net proceeds.

How to buy the iPhone 16 with Apple Trade In
Online
- Open Apple’s iPhone 16 purchase page.
- Select the model, storage, color, and connectivity or carrier option.
- Choose Trade In when prompted.
- Select your old iPhone and answer the condition questions.
- Review the estimated credit and the remaining purchase price.
- Choose an available payment method, then complete checkout.
- Keep the old iPhone until the new one is activated and fully checked.
- Return the old phone using Apple’s instructions. Apple says mailed trade-ins generally must be received within 14 days of receiving the new device; follow the deadline in your order email or kit.
If inspection produces a lower value, Apple may revise the credit under the applicable trade-in terms. Depending on the transaction, you may be able to reject the revised offer. Read the terms attached to your order rather than assuming every purchase follows the same process.
At an Apple Store
Back up the old iPhone before visiting. An Apple Specialist can inspect it and provide an in-person value. You can accept or decline that value, buy the iPhone 16, and transfer your data in the store or at home. Do not erase the old device until the transfer and activation are confirmed.
Transfer your data before erasing the old phone
Use Apple’s Quick Start when both phones are available:
- Charge both iPhones.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPhone.
- Place the old iPhone beside the new iPhone.
- Turn on the iPhone 16 and follow the Quick Start instructions.
- Keep both devices nearby and powered until the transfer finishes.
If direct transfer is unavailable, restore from an iCloud or computer backup. An iCloud backup is not always a complete, immediately usable duplicate: some app data, passwords, passkeys, authentication tools, and account access require separate synchronization or setup.

- Passwords, passkeys, password-manager access, and recovery codes.
- Banking, payment, work, school, and other essential apps.
- Health data and Wallet cards or transit passes.
- Authenticator apps and two-factor authentication.
- Phone calls, text messages, voicemail, and cellular data.
- Apple Watch pairing and other important accessories.
Apple’s preparation guidance recommends transferring information and then removing personal information from the old device.

The iPhone 16 may offer to transfer your cellular plan during setup. The exact process depends on your carrier and account.
- Do not manually delete the old eSIM before the new line works.
- Keep the old iPhone connected to Wi-Fi while following the transfer prompt.
- Test calls, texts, cellular data, and voicemail on the iPhone 16.
- If the transfer fails, contact the carrier before erasing the old phone.
Older phones may use a physical SIM, while U.S. iPhone models and carrier procedures vary. Apple notes that eSIM users may need their wireless provider’s help to transfer or suspend service; see its iPhone preparation guide.
Erase and hand over the old iPhone
After confirming the new phone works:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your Apple Account name at the top and choose Sign Out if prompted.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Erase the eSIM when the prompt appears, but only after the new line has been tested.
- Confirm that the old phone reaches the setup “Hello” screen.
Erasing should remove your personal content and disable the old device’s link to your account. Find My and Activation Lock must not remain enabled. If you cannot turn off Find My, resolve the Apple Account, Screen Time, management, connectivity, or recovery issue before shipping the phone. Apple’s trade-in terms identify failure to remove Find My as a reason a quote may be revised.
Keep chargers, cables, cases, and watch straps unless the vendor specifically requests them. Apple says accessories are not required for trade-in value.

Mail the old iPhone without losing the credit
- Use the supplied trade-in kit or approved packaging.
- Photograph the phone’s condition and serial number before packing it.
- Photograph the packed box and shipping label.
- Obtain a drop-off receipt and save the tracking number.
- Check the trade-in status page and keep proof until the credit is finalized.
- Follow the kit’s battery and carrier-shipping instructions exactly.
Apple’s instructions address battery charge, filler, and one-device-per-box shipping. A phone with a swollen, punctured, leaking, or otherwise damaged battery should not be mailed. Do not ship a disassembled device. Contact the vendor for safe handling instructions instead.
What if the trade-in value is reduced?
There are three common outcomes:
- Accepted at the quoted value: the estimated credit proceeds.
- Revised value: inspection finds that the condition differs from your answers.
- No value or rejection: the device may qualify only for recycling, or the program may offer a way to reject the revision.
A cracked screen, damaged back glass, failed Face ID, camera problem, bent frame, water damage, carrier lock, or poor battery can be treated differently by Apple and each carrier. Do not describe a damaged phone as being in good condition just to obtain a higher estimate.
If a mailed trade-in is downgraded, compare the inspection reason with your saved photos and original answers. Review the offer’s rejection and return options, contact the vendor promptly, and keep all shipment records.
Common problems and the safest response
The old iPhone is still financed
Check the carrier or financing agreement first. Trading in a financed phone does not automatically cancel the remaining installments unless the specific terms say it does. A carrier may also restrict promotions until the device is paid off.

Do not erase the old phone. Reconnect it to Wi-Fi, check iCloud synchronization, restore the correct backup, and sign in to apps individually. Authenticator and banking apps may require separate recovery steps.

The trade-in shipment is delayed or lost
Check tracking and the trade-in status page, then contact the vendor if tracking stops updating. Keep your receipt, photos, tracking number, and order details until the credit is complete.
You need a temporary phone
Keep the old iPhone active until the replacement is fully working. If you already initiated a mail-in trade-in, contact the vendor before missing its deadline.
The battery is swollen or damaged
Do not mail it or place it in ordinary household recycling. Follow the vendor’s hazardous-battery guidance or contact an appropriate electronics-recycling service.
