Then confirm you can legally access the venue, compare the full costs, and decide how you will exit or handle expiry before placing an order. A call gives its buyer a right to buy at a strike price; a put gives its buyer a right to sell. Selling either option creates an obligation if it is exercised or assigned.
How crypto options work
An option is a contract with a strike price and an expiration. A call buyer has the right to buy under the contract terms; a put buyer has the right to sell. The seller, also called the writer, receives the premium and takes on the corresponding obligation if the contract is exercised or assigned. These basic mechanics are explained in FINRA’s options education.
Buying an option
The premium is the price paid to buy the option, not a guaranteed return or income stream. For a long option held on its own, the premium paid is generally the maximum amount at risk, before fees and complications from related positions. The option may lose value before expiry even when the underlying moves in the anticipated direction: the strike, time remaining, and expectations for future volatility also affect its premium.
For example, a call buyer pays a premium for the contract right defined by that call’s strike and expiry. If the option is not valuable enough relative to the premium and costs, the buyer can lose the amount paid. This describes the mechanics only; it is not a market quote or a recommendation to trade.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. A Quick-Start QR that scans straight to step-by-step instructions.
- NOT A NOTEBOOK, A COMPLETE 12-WEEK SYSTEM: Start with a one-time 9-part Trading Plan (your market, setups, risk rules and discipline checklist). Then twelve identical weeks: five Daily Logs, five Deep Dive trade pages, and a two-page Weekly Review. 189 guided pages, roughly 80 trades. Guided prompts walk you through every step. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.
- BUILT TO LAST, ARRIVES GIFT-READY: Vegan-leather hardcover, 100gsm bleed-resistant paper, two ribbon markers and an elastic closure band. Bound to lay flat so you're not fighting the spine while you write. 189 pages, 5.75" x 8.5", carries in a bag. Ships in a premium gift box: the gift every trader in your life actually wants.
Selling an option
The seller receives the premium but accepts an obligation if exercised or assigned. If the contract expires worthless, the premium received is the seller’s maximum profit on that option; assignment can create further losses. The risk depends on the specific contract and position. FINRA’s example of theoretically unlimited loss concerns an uncovered call on stock options, so do not treat it as a universal payoff formula for every crypto options contract.
What to check on a contract
“Crypto options” is not a single product type. A contract might be an option on a futures contract, an inverse option with settlement in its margin currency, or an option linked to a crypto-related index or ETF. Read the specific contract specification and confirm each of the following before considering an order:

- Contract size and multiplier: Determine how much exposure one contract represents and how its value is calculated.
- Quote, premium, and settlement currencies: Establish the currencies used to quote the option, pay or receive the premium, post collateral, and settle the contract. They may differ.
- Strike and expiry: Check the strike price, expiry date and time, and available exercise style.
- Exercise and settlement: Find out whether exercise creates a futures position, results in cash settlement, or uses another method. Do not assume it delivers spot cryptocurrency.
- Trading and expiry procedures: Check trading hours, any maintenance window, how an open position can be closed, and what happens automatically at expiry.
- Margin and fees: Review initial and maintenance margin, the venue’s liquidation rules, and exchange, broker, settlement, and other applicable charges.
For instance, CME says the value of its cryptocurrency options is tied to the underlying futures price, which in turn reflects movements in the spot market. That futures link means the option is not simply a direct claim on a spot coin.
What happens at expiry
Settlement rules determine what an in-the-money option becomes or pays out. The details are contract-specific, so check them before opening a position rather than assuming that an option will turn into cryptocurrency.

CME options on cryptocurrency futures
CME says its cryptocurrency options and underlying futures do not deliver actual cryptocurrency. Its options are European-style, and in-the-money contracts are automatically exercised at expiry under the applicable rules. Most exercise into a futures contract; options on Bitcoin Friday futures instead settle financially. A futures position created by exercise has its own exposure and requirements.
Deribit inverse options
Deribit’s inverse options are BTC- and ETH-denominated, with settlement in the margin currency. The specification reviewed lists daily expiries at 08:00 UTC. Confirm the current contract terms and expiry procedures in Deribit’s inverse-options specifications.

Other crypto-related products
Do not infer settlement terms from a product category or exchange name. Cboe describes a regulated, cash-settled crypto derivatives suite, but its linked products include Bitcoin U.S. ETF index options as well as other derivatives. An option tied to an ETF or index is not automatically an option directly on a spot coin; use the individual product specification to identify the underlying and settlement method.
A pre-trade workflow
- Confirm country and account eligibility. Check the current venue and broker requirements for your location and account type, along with applicable local rules. CME says its listed crypto options require an account with a registered futures broker, such as a futures commission merchant (FCM) or Introducing Broker. That requirement describes CME’s route, not all venues.
- Identify the exact product. Read the contract specification to verify the underlying, multiplier, quote and settlement currencies, exercise style, and settlement method. CME options are on futures; Deribit’s inverse options have BTC- or ETH-denominated mechanics. The relevant specifications are at the CME FAQ and Deribit inverse-options page.
- Review strikes and expiries available for that contract. CME’s catalog lists weekly and monthly expiries, including Monday-through-Friday expiries across products for BTC, Micro BTC, Ether, Micro Ether, SOL, Micro SOL, XRP, and Micro XRP. Availability differs by product and can change; consult the current CME options catalog rather than assuming every expiry exists for every contract.
- Check the market and calculate costs. Review the bid-ask spread and available liquidity as well as the multiplier, exchange and broker fees, margin, settlement charges, and possible liquidation charges. CME describes SPAN margin as reflecting anticipated price changes, volatility, liquidity, and correlations. Deribit publishes maker-taker and product-specific fees, including expiry delivery and liquidation charges. Rates can change, so use the current order ticket and CME fee information or Deribit fee schedule for the specific contract.
- Set an exit and expiry plan. Decide in advance what conditions would lead you to close the position and what you will do if it remains open at expiry. Confirm whether closing requires an opposite transaction in the same contract series and what position or payment expiry may produce. CME states that its crypto options trade 24/7 except during maintenance, but that schedule is CME-specific, not a rule for every venue.
- Size against the risk you can identify. For a short option or a position using margin, do not treat premium received or posted collateral as a loss limit. Understand the potential obligation, collateral currency, liquidation triggers, and any position created by exercise. Do not risk money needed for essential expenses.
How the cited venues differ
The sources support a focused comparison of CME, Deribit inverse options, and Cboe’s crypto-related derivatives—not a ranking of all global, decentralized, or over-the-counter markets. Availability and contract details must be checked for the specific product and account.

Risks, costs, and rules to understand
Premium and volatility
An option can expire worthless. Its premium reflects more than the underlying’s direction: time remaining and expectations for future volatility matter too. A view about price direction alone does not establish whether an option will be profitable after the premium and costs.
Obligations and margin
Selling options creates an obligation, and margin is not a cap on losses. Margin models, collateral currencies, liquidation triggers, and fees differ by venue and contract. CME’s SPAN description identifies factors used in its margin model; Deribit publishes venue-specific liquidation-fee rules. Read the applicable contract and risk documentation rather than applying one platform’s rules to another.
Legal access and tax
Venue availability and local rules depend on the reader’s circumstances. The SEC’s 2026 interpretation addresses federal securities-law treatment of crypto assets, but it does not establish that a particular exchange or product is available to every person. Tax treatment of crypto options is not resolved here and can depend on the instrument and jurisdiction; consult a qualified tax professional or an authoritative source for your situation.
