Track each signal on its own terms: use Bank of Japan (BOJ) exchange-rate data for yen movements, Ministry of Finance (MOF) constant-maturity rates for Japanese government bond yields, and a Bitcoin price and volatility feed that identifies the instrument being measured. Record each observation’s time and scope. These are different indicators—not a single risk score or a reliable rule for predicting one another.
Which source should you use?
| Signal | Source or series | What it measures | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yen versus the U.S. dollar | BOJ Foreign Exchange Rates (Daily) and its Time-Series Data Search | A bilateral USD/JPY rate. The BOJ time-series data includes spot-rate observations at 9:00 and 17:00 JST, reported as bid-offer mid rates. | It shows the yen against the dollar, not against all trading partners. Daily releases may be revised or corrected. |
| Yen against trading partners | BOJ Yen Index | A nominal effective exchange-rate index using trade weights. | It is a different measure from USD/JPY; its weights and methodology affect the result. |
| Japanese government bond yields | MOF Interest Rate and related time series | Curve-derived JGB yields at selected remaining maturities. | Each point is not the yield of one specific bond. The cited series reflects the prior business day’s 3 p.m. close and is released the next business day. |
| Bitcoin market risk | A Bitcoin price and volatility feed that identifies its market and instrument | Price behavior and volatility for the specified exposure, such as spot Bitcoin or futures. | A price feed alone does not show leverage, custody arrangements, venue safeguards, or the mechanics of a particular fund. |
How to tell whether the yen is strengthening
USD/JPY is quoted as yen per U.S. dollar. When the number rises, one dollar buys more yen, so the yen has weakened against the dollar. When it falls, the yen has strengthened against the dollar. State the observation time: exchange rates move throughout the day, and an unlabeled figure can be mistaken for a live quote.
The BOJ’s daily exchange-rate series has been released each business day since January 4, 2007. Its time-series data includes USD/JPY spot observations at 9:00 and 17:00 JST; label the date and reference time when using either. The BOJ notes that recent daily releases may be revised or corrected.
Use an effective-rate index for broader context
A dollar pair cannot establish whether the yen is gaining or losing value against its other trading partners. For that broader question, consult the BOJ’s Yen Index, a nominal effective exchange-rate measure. Its methodology is basically based on the Bank for International Settlements’ effective-exchange-rate methodology, and the trade weights are recalculated every three years. Because this index aggregates multiple currencies and weights, it can move differently from USD/JPY.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Keep reference conventions in view: BOJ statistical notes say times are JST unless otherwise indicated, and different foreign-exchange statistics can use different reference times and compilation methods. Compare like with like rather than treating every published rate as a simultaneous market quote.
How to track Japanese bond yields
Use the MOF’s JGB constant-maturity rates and note the maturity you are following. The MOF describes these as semiannual-compound rates calculated from prevailing secondary-market prices of fixed-income JGBs at the 3 p.m. close. They are published at 9:30 a.m. on the next business day.

A constant-maturity yield is the point on a yield curve corresponding to a chosen remaining maturity. The MOF constructs its curve from selected JGBs on a grid, so a published point is a curve-derived reference rate, not necessarily the yield on one particular bond.
Read the curve, not just one number
Choose a short-, intermediate-, or long-maturity point based on the question you are tracking. If you compare several maturities, distinguish a broad move in yield levels from a change in the curve’s shape. A single point cannot tell you whether the rest of the curve moved in the same way.

Add market-function context when needed
The BOJ’s Bond Market Survey covers market functioning and the outlook for long-term rates. It is conducted quarterly—in February, May, August, and November—with results normally released on the first business day of the following month. The BOJ also publishes JGB liquidity indicators. Its April 2026 Financial System Report discusses cash-market transaction volumes and bid-ask spreads and identifies February 2026 survey data as the latest survey observations used in that report. These materials add context about market functioning and liquidity; they do not replace the yield series.
How to assess Bitcoin market risk
Separate price direction, volatility, and the structure of the exposure. A rising or falling Bitcoin price is not, by itself, a full measure of risk. SEC and CFTC staff investor guidance describes Bitcoin, including exposure through Bitcoin futures, as highly speculative and warns about volatility and potential loss. The guidance is from agency staff, not a Commission rule.

Spot and futures exposure are not interchangeable
A futures-based fund may not track spot Bitcoin in the same way as direct spot exposure. Futures prices can differ by delivery month, and funds periodically roll positions into later contracts. The SEC/CFTC alert also warns of potential fraud or manipulation in the underlying spot market.
The CFTC’s virtual-currency advisory identifies volatile swings and flash crashes, manipulation, cyber risks, weak platform safeguards, and conflicts of interest where a platform trades from its own account. It also warns that leverage in margined futures amplifies the effect of a cash-market move. The risk of any particular fund, platform, or position depends on its own mechanics and safeguards; a general price feed cannot establish those details.

Build a comparison routine that avoids false signals
Keep a small record for every observation. This makes delayed official data less likely to be mistaken for a simultaneous market move and clarifies what each number actually represents.
- Record the series and unit. Note whether the yen figure is USD/JPY or the BOJ Yen Index, which JGB maturity you are using, and which Bitcoin market or instrument supplies the price.
- Write down observation date, time, and time zone. For BOJ FX observations, include the stated reference time in JST. For MOF yields, distinguish the 3 p.m. prior-business-day close from the 9:30 a.m. next-business-day release.
- Identify the exposure. For Bitcoin, mark spot, a futures-based fund, or a margined futures position; do not treat their mechanics as equivalent.
- State the limitation alongside the reading. USD/JPY is bilateral, the Yen Index is trade-weighted, a constant-maturity yield is curve-derived, and a Bitcoin quote does not capture all venue or position risks.
- Compare direction only after aligning the dates and reference periods. FX and Bitcoin trade on schedules different from the next-business-day MOF yield release, so observations may not be synchronous.
These indicators describe market conditions, not a proven causal relationship among the yen, JGB yields, and Bitcoin. The cited official sources do not establish a reliable cross-asset rule or a single threshold that predicts losses.
