Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTrack shipbuilding as three separate datasets: new contracts and orders (future work), completed vessel deliveries (yard output), and the fleet already in service (the installed stock). Add a fourth, carefully documented layer for physical capacity. Keeping those layers separate prevents the most common analytical errors—calling an order a delivery, treating a yard count as capacity, or mixing GT, CGT, DWT and vessel counts.
Start with the distinction between orders, deliveries, fleet and capacity
A shipbuilding contract is a commitment to build one or more vessels. It creates potential future workload but does not prove that construction has started or that a vessel will be delivered. A delivery is the recorded completion and handover of a vessel. The fleet is the stock of ships already in service at a stated date. Capacity is the shipyard system’s ability to produce vessels, which depends on facilities, labor, docks, production lines, ship size and vessel complexity.

These measures answer different questions:
- Orders/contracts: How much future work has been booked, and when might it be delivered?
- Deliveries: How much physical output did yards complete during a period?
- Fleet: How large is the operating merchant fleet at the snapshot date?
- Capacity: What can a named yard, country or production system plausibly build, and what constraints could limit that output?
Do not subtract deliveries from orders as if both were measured in the same period or represented the same vessels. Ship construction commonly spans multiple years, and an orderbook can contain options, postponed contracts, cancellations and revised delivery dates.
Fix the scope before collecting a number
Write a one-sentence scope statement before opening a dataset. It should specify the geography, vessel population, size threshold, commercial or naval scope, time window, status definition and measurement unit. For example: “Commercial ships of at least 100 GT, worldwide, contracts announced during calendar year 2026, measured by vessel count and GT, with options shown separately from firm orders.”

This discipline matters because maritime statistics use different populations. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) shipbuilding and recycling statistics cover commercial ships of 100 GT and above. Some fleet-ownership comparisons use ships of 1,000 GT and above. A figure without its threshold is not safely comparable with another figure.
Choose the time reference
- Event date: the contract award, keel laying, launch or actual delivery date.
- Snapshot date: the fleet or orderbook position on a specified day, such as 1 January.
- Publication or update date: when the provider released or refreshed the data.
Keep all three dates in your records. UNCTAD’s public maritime hub is a statistical snapshot, not a live contract feed. Its public page reported an update date of 18 June 2026, while the latest figures in the 2025 Review of Maritime Transport concern 2024 activity and the beginning of 2025.
Use a layered source stack
UNCTADstat for public aggregate context
UNCTAD’s maritime data hub provides public series and metadata for ships built by country, merchant fleets by flag, vessel type and ownership, and related maritime indicators. It is useful for repeatable country comparisons because the population, reference date and definitions are documented.

Its summary tables do not by themselves constitute a complete, live yard-level orderbook. Use them to establish the market context, then add a vessel-level or yard-level source when your question involves named ships, individual contracts or expected delivery dates.
Specialist registers for vessel-level monitoring
Clarksons Research describes its World Fleet Register and Shipping Intelligence Network as covering vessel and fleet information, including shipbuilding-related details. Such a register can support ship-by-ship work that public aggregate series cannot. Coverage is not automatically identical across products or subscription tiers, so confirm which fields are included and how they are defined before relying on a paid feed.
For every provider, document whether a record is a confirmed order, an option, a cancellation, a postponement or an estimated delivery. Public materials do not establish one universal status taxonomy across providers; two systems may use the same label for different evidence standards.

Build three ledgers and a separate capacity file
Do not force orders, deliveries and fleet stock into one table. Separate ledgers make double counting easier to detect and preserve the history of changing estimates.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ledger A: contracts and orders
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Contract identifier | Provider identifier plus your internal stable ID |
| Vessel type | Use the source classification and retain the original label |
| Builder and yard | Named facility where reported; distinguish group headquarters from building site |
| Ordering party | Owner, operator or buyer when disclosed |
| Order date | Announcement or contract date, with its evidence status |
| Status | Firm order, option, cancelled, postponed or estimated; do not collapse these into one count |
| Quantity | Number of vessels, with options in a separate field |
| Measure | GT, CGT, DWT or vessel count exactly as supplied |
| Expected delivery | Date or year, plus the date on which that estimate was observed |
When an expected delivery changes, overwrite neither the original estimate nor the reason for the change. Add a new dated observation. The sequence of estimates lets you measure slippage and distinguish a late vessel from a cancelled project.
Ledger B: completed deliveries
Record the actual completion or delivery date, delivering yard, vessel identifier, vessel type and the delivered vessel measure. A vessel belongs in this ledger only when the source indicates completion or delivery under your stated definition. An order that has passed its expected date remains an undelivered order until the status changes.
Ledger C: fleet in service
Capture the reference date, flag or ownership classification, vessel type, minimum size, vessel count and capacity measure. Fleet data is a stock measure: it describes what exists at the snapshot, not what a yard produced during the year.
Capacity file
Keep stated capacity and physical evidence in their own records. Useful fields include facility, dry dock or berth, production line, workforce, maximum vessel dimensions, annual stated output, source, observation date and whether the figure is a management claim, regulatory fact or analyst estimate. A country total should not be created by adding incompatible facility claims.
A repeatable tracking workflow
- Define the decision. Decide whether you are monitoring global trends, comparing countries, forecasting a vessel type, assessing a named yard’s workload or following one vessel. The decision determines the necessary granularity.
- Set boundaries. Fix the geography, commercial or naval scope, vessel-size threshold, period and units. Write exclusions such as repair-only facilities or speculative options.
- Load the public baseline. Use UNCTADstat’s shipbuilding, fleet and related series to establish totals and definitions. Save the table title, reference date, update date and metadata with the extracted value.
- Add vessel-level records. Use a specialist register or primary contract disclosures for named vessels and yards. Store the provider’s status wording instead of translating it immediately into “confirmed.”
- Normalize without erasing. Map vessel types to a controlled list, but retain the source category. Keep GT, CGT, DWT and vessel count in separate columns. Never convert one into another without a documented methodology.
- Reconcile time. Compare contracts with deliveries only after allowing for the construction lead time of the relevant vessel class. Match the delivery to the original order or a documented replacement, and flag cancellations and postponements.
- Refresh estimates. On each update, append the new expected delivery and status. A change in date is information, not a data-cleaning nuisance.
- Publish an audit trail. Put the observation date, publication or update date, geography, vessel scope, unit, status definition and source beside every chart or table.
Keep measurement units attached to every figure
Gross tonnage (GT) is a measure of the ship’s enclosed internal volume and is widely used in shipbuilding and recycling statistics. Deadweight tonnage (DWT) indicates cargo-carrying capacity, including cargo, fuel, stores and other weight a vessel can carry. Compensated gross tonnage (CGT) is an industry productivity measure that adjusts for the work content of different ship types and sizes.

GT, CGT and DWT answer different questions. A market can lead in DWT while producing fewer, larger ships; another can deliver more vessels by count but less carrying capacity. A chart must label the unit in its title, axis, data table and notes. If a source reports only CGT, do not silently present it as GT.
How to evaluate shipyard capacity without overstating it
A yard count is an activity indicator, not a capacity inventory. UNCTAD states: “Assessing the number of shipyards and their capacity depends on wide-ranging factors, including the size and range of ships.” A facility able to build small coastal vessels is not interchangeable with a yard equipped for very large tankers, container ships, gas carriers or specialized offshore units.
Separate observed output from productive potential
- Observed output: vessels actually delivered during a defined period.
- Booked workload: firm orders and their expected delivery windows.
- Physical capability: docks, berths, cranes, fabrication halls, block-assembly lines and launch systems.
- Resource constraint: skilled labor, subcontractors, steel supply, engines, equipment and financing.
- Mix constraint: whether the facility can build the dimensions, propulsion system and regulatory specification required.
Use yard-level evidence whenever possible. If a source gives only the number of yards with a new contract or delivery, report it as an activity-based count. Do not call it “available capacity” or divide national orders by that number to infer average yard utilization.

| Indicator | Interpretation | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Annual deliveries | Realized output | State year, vessel population and unit |
| Orderbook | Future booked work | Separate firm orders, options and uncertain status |
| Berth or dock dimensions | Physical size limit | Identify the specific facility and source date |
| Stated annual capacity | Reported potential output | Label as stated capacity, not independently verified output |

What the latest public figures show
| Measure | Reported value | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Share of ships completed in 2025 by gross tonnage built in China, the Republic of Korea or Japan | 91% | UNCTAD, updated 18 June 2026; this is a 2025 completion measure by GT, not vessel count |
| China’s share of the global orderbook at the start of 2025 | 63.7% | UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2025, based on Clarksons Research; orderbook share by GT, not deliveries |
| Operational shipyards that secured a new contract or completed a delivery in 2024 | About 348 worldwide | Activity-based count; UNCTAD cautions that it is not a standardized capacity measure |
| Global merchant fleet at the start of 2026 | Around 116,000 vessels of at least 100 GT | Fleet stock at a snapshot date |
| Of that fleet, vessels over 1,000 GT | Around 62,000 | Different size threshold; do not compare directly with the 100-GT total |
| World fleet carrying capacity on 1 January 2026 | 2.5 billion DWT | Carrying-capacity stock measure, not shipyard output |
| Year-on-year change in carrying capacity | Increase of 85 million DWT | Change from the prior year’s fleet stock |
The figures illustrate why a single “shipbuilding market size” number is misleading. The 91% figure describes completed production by GT, the 63.7% figure describes future booked work by GT, the 348 figure counts active yards under a particular activity test, and the fleet totals describe ships already in service. They cannot be substituted for one another.
Comparison framework for countries, yards or data providers
Use the same checklist whenever you compare two markets or two information systems:
- Orders versus deliveries: are you comparing future commitments with realized output, or like with like?
- Unit: is the comparison by vessel count, GT, CGT or DWT?
- Population: do both figures cover the same commercial scope and minimum size?
- Ship mix: are vessel types and size ranges comparable?
- Aggregation level: is one figure a national orderbook while the other is a single yard?
- Reference date: do the snapshots align, and are publication dates different from observation dates?
- Status treatment: are options, cancellations, postponements and revised dates handled consistently?
- Capacity evidence: does the source measure physical productive capability or merely observed orders and deliveries?
If any answer is “no,” present the figures as separate indicators with an explanation rather than ranking them as if they were directly comparable.

Common errors and how to correct them
Counting an order as output
Symptom: a newly announced vessel appears in the delivery total. Correction: place it in the contracts ledger and move it only when the source records actual completion or delivery.
Calling a yard count capacity
Symptom: “348 yards” is presented as the number of yards available to build any ship. Correction: describe the figure as yards that secured a contract or completed a delivery during 2024, then document size and range limitations.
Recommended Free Tools
Mixing GT, CGT and DWT
Symptom: a chart adds GT from one source to DWT from another. Correction: maintain separate fields and label every series; if conversion is not supplied by the source, do not invent one.

Ignoring options and cancellations
Symptom: the maximum possible number of vessels is reported as firm work. Correction: show firm orders, options, cancelled contracts and postponed contracts in separate status categories.
Using mismatched dates
Symptom: a 2026 fleet snapshot is compared with a 2024 delivery total without explanation. Correction: state each observation period and use a time-aligned comparison or explicitly label it as a stock-versus-flow analysis.
Overlooking stale delivery estimates
Symptom: an old expected date is treated as current. Correction: store the date on which the estimate was observed and flag estimates that have not been refreshed.

For an investor, lender, insurer or corporate planner, the useful signal is usually the relationship among workload, realized output and constraints—not a single headline ranking.
- Revenue visibility: a firm orderbook can indicate future work, but cancellations, options and delivery slippage affect when revenue can be recognized.
- Execution risk: repeated changes to expected delivery dates can indicate schedule pressure, equipment delays or labor constraints, although the dataset alone does not prove the cause.
- Concentration risk: a country or yard with a large share of a vessel segment may be exposed to a narrow customer or ship-type cycle.
- Capacity bottlenecks: limited docks, specialized production lines or scarce skilled labor can matter even when national yard counts look high.
- Fleet renewal: compare deliveries with the age and size composition of the existing fleet, keeping fleet stock separate from annual output.
These indicators support scenario analysis, not certainty. A large orderbook is not guaranteed cash flow, and a large fleet does not identify which yards will receive the next contracts.
Minimum documentation for a defensible result
Before publishing or using a chart, verify that it includes:
- Source provider and dataset or register name.
- Observation date and publication or update date.
- Geographic and commercial scope.
- Minimum vessel size and vessel-type classification.
- Unit: vessel count, GT, CGT or DWT.
- Status definition and treatment of options, cancellations and postponements.
- Whether the number is a stock, a flow or an activity-based count.
- Any limitation on yard-level capacity evidence.
When those fields are visible, a reader can reproduce the comparison and understand what the number does—and does not—measure.
