Use a short watchlist and a few price alerts to know when a coin reaches a level you care about, instead of repeatedly opening charts. CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap both document alert and tracking features; neither guarantees that an alert will arrive at a particular time or match the price available on a specific exchange.
How to set a crypto price alert
- Choose a tracker that lists the coins you follow. In CoinGecko, search for a coin and open its alert control. CoinGecko’s guide says an account is required to set price alerts: CoinGecko’s alert instructions.
- Choose a target that has a clear purpose. Set a custom price or, where offered, a percentage change. Check that the selected coin and currency are the ones you intend to monitor.
- Choose how often the alert should apply. CoinGecko documents one-time and recurring alerts. A one-time alert suits a single threshold; a recurring alert is useful if you want future notifications whenever its conditions are met. The available choices and setup are described in CoinGecko’s guide and its support instructions.
- Enable notifications in both places. Allow notifications in the tracker app and in your phone’s system settings. CoinGecko says its automatic alerts require device notifications and enabled alert settings: CoinGecko Auto Price Alerts.
- Test your setup and maintain it. Confirm that the alert appears in the app and that the app is permitted to notify you. Delete targets that are no longer useful. CoinGecko says its automatic alert subscriptions expire after 45 days; that period applies to the automatic feature described in its October 27, 2025 support article, not necessarily to manually created alerts.
Choose a tracker that fits how you check prices

Build a low-maintenance watchlist
Keep the list limited to coins you genuinely want to monitor. A crowded watchlist creates more noise, while a focused list makes a scheduled check-in easier. If you track holdings as well as prices, use a portfolio feature to keep that view separate from coins you are merely watching.
Widgets can make a portfolio or selected prices visible at a glance, and CoinGecko documents mobile widgets. They do not replace alert setup: create the alert separately if you want a notification when a threshold is reached. CoinMarketCap says its watchlist can sync between mobile and laptop, which can help if you switch devices.

What a price alert can—and cannot—tell you
A threshold alert is a prompt to check a price, not a trading instruction. The reviewed CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap materials describe notifications; they do not establish that an alert executes a trade, arrives with guaranteed timing, or reflects the exact executable price on your exchange. Before acting, verify the relevant coin and currency pair in the venue where you would trade.
The vendor documentation also does not compare the services’ price-feed methods or explain how their trigger prices line up with every exchange. This is not evidence that a particular tracker is inaccurate; it means you should treat the notification as a reason to verify, especially before making a trade decision.

Keep the setup useful over time
- Use a small number of thresholds tied to decisions you actually want to revisit.
- Check the selected currency and coin before saving each alert.
- Make sure the app and device both permit notifications; delivery behavior can depend on device configuration, and the vendor pages do not promise push timing.
- Remove stale targets and review automatic subscriptions. CoinGecko’s 45-day expiry applies to its Auto Price Alerts as described in its October 27, 2025 article, not to every alert type.
- For any trade, confirm the price and pair on the intended exchange rather than relying on the alert alone.
CoinMarketCap’s support article, updated January 6, 2026, lists Android 5.0 or later and iOS 11.0 or later for its app. Because app requirements can change, check the current app-store listing for your device before installing.
