Use the GST Portal to find your refund application’s processing stage, then check PFMS if you need to confirm bank-account validation or payment disbursal. These are separate checks: an application can be progressing on the portal without payment being complete.
This guide is for Indian GST taxpayers, business owners and representatives who have already filed a refund application. The practical first step is to locate the application with its ARN or filing year. Then read the stage and any case-specific communication before deciding what to do. If processing has advanced but the money has not arrived, check PFMS rather than assuming the GST Portal status confirms payment.

How to check your GST refund status with an ARN
Your ARN is the reference used to find the filed refund application. GSTN describes two ways to track it: after signing in to the GST Portal, or through its pre-login tracking page. The portal’s labels may change, so use the current menu names if they differ from the paths below.
Recommended Free Tools
Before you start, have the ARN available if you plan to search by reference. If you do not have it immediately to hand, the logged-in route also allows a filing-year search. The purpose of this check is to establish where the application is in the processing sequence—not to establish whether a payment has already been made.

Track the application after logging in
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Refunds > Track Application Status.
- Select the filing year or enter the ARN, then search.
- Read the displayed stage and note whether the next action is pending with the officer or with you.
This view is for the application’s processing stage. GSTN’s advisory describes this route and the information the tracking page provides: GSTN advisory on tracking refund applications.
Read the result as a case-specific checkpoint. The stage can help you distinguish a matter still awaiting an officer’s step from one that indicates a taxpayer action is pending. It does not, by itself, explain every reason a case has not moved or guarantee when it will move next. If the page points to an action on your part, look for the related notice, deficiency memo or other case communication and follow that instruction rather than guessing from the label alone.
Track without signing in
GSTN’s functionality note describes a pre-login route: open Services > Track Application Status, choose Refund, and enter the ARN. The page displays refund stages and marks the current one. This pre-login path is documented in GSTN’s January–March 2021 functionality compilation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This gives you another way to view the stage when you have the ARN but are not signed in. The pre-login and logged-in routes are both for tracking the application; neither should be confused with the separate PFMS check for bank validation and disbursal. If the labels or page arrangement now differ from the 2021 description, follow the live portal’s current menu and prompts.
Where to check GST refund payment status
Use PFMS for bank-account validation and payment disbursal, rather than treating the GST Portal’s processing stage as proof that money has been sent. GSTN identifies PFMS as the channel for these payment-related checks in its refund-tracking advisory.
Bank validation is relevant at two points in the payment process, according to GSTN:

- PFMS must validate the bank account stated in RFD-01 before the tax officer can issue a payment order.
- PFMS must also validate the account stated in RFD-05 before final disbursal.
That means the account associated with the application and the account referenced at the later disbursal stage are both relevant to the checks described by GSTN. If the portal shows that processing has advanced but the refund has not arrived, check PFMS for validation and disbursal status before concluding that the application itself is stalled.

A processing stage and a payment status describe different parts of the process. A case may have moved through application processing while a payment-related check remains outstanding, so seeing progress in one channel is not a substitute for checking the other.
The GSTN advisory identifies the two validation points, but it does not provide a universal diagnosis for every unsuccessful validation or a complete set of corrective steps for every bank-related issue. Use the status shown for the actual case and any instruction attached to it. Do not assume that changing account details, submitting another application or repeating an earlier step is the right remedy unless the case-specific guidance calls for it.
What to check when a GST refund is still pending
There is no single status label that explains every delay. Use the case record to identify which stage is outstanding and whether it calls for an action from you. The official material cited here specifically identifies bank validation as a prerequisite to payment; it does not establish a complete list of causes for delayed refunds.
- Find the application. Search the GST Portal using the ARN or filing year.
- Identify the current stage. Note whether the displayed next step is pending with the officer or taxpayer.
- Read case-specific communications. Look for a notice, deficiency memo, or other instruction attached to the application, and follow the instruction for that case.
- Check PFMS if the issue is payment. Review bank validation and disbursal status when the processing stage has advanced but the amount has not arrived.
- Do not act on a generic label alone. Use the actual case record to decide what to do; a duplicate application or an assumed correction may not address the pending step.
This sequence helps separate an application-stage question from a payment-stage question. It does not promise a resolution time: the available GSTN material does not establish one general processing timeline for every refund category.

Start with the GST Portal result, even if you think the problem is a delayed payment. The stage tells you whether the application is still being processed and whether the portal indicates a pending officer or taxpayer step. Then inspect the case record for communications that explain an action or request. A notice or deficiency memo is more useful than trying to infer a correction from a broad description of a pending claim.

If the record shows that the case is awaiting an action from you, address the instruction attached to that case. If it shows that the next step is with the officer, that fact identifies the current party in the process; it does not establish a deadline or predict the date of the next update. If processing has advanced and the issue is that no funds have reached the bank account, move to PFMS and check validation and disbursal. This avoids treating every “pending” situation as the same problem.
When checking the result, record the ARN, the stage shown, whether the next step is assigned to the officer or taxpayer, and any case-specific communication. If you check again later, compare the current result with those details rather than relying on memory of a previous page. This is a way to keep the two status checks organized; it is not an additional filing requirement or a promise that the stage will change within a particular period.
Common mistakes to avoid while checking
- Using only one channel. The GST Portal answers the application-stage question. PFMS is relevant to bank validation and disbursal. One status cannot stand in for the other.
- Assuming that processing progress means payment is complete. GSTN describes bank validation before a payment order and again before final disbursal.
- Assuming every delay has the same cause. The cited GSTN material identifies bank validation as a payment prerequisite but does not publish a complete catalogue of delay causes.
- Taking action from a generic label without reading the case record. Check whether a notice, deficiency memo or other instruction applies to your application.
- Filing again simply because the first application appears pending. A duplicate application is not established as a solution by the tracking guidance. First identify the current stage and follow the instructions for the filed case.
- Relying on an old screen description as though it cannot change. The pre-login functionality note dates to 2021. Use the current portal labels if the interface has changed.
- Expecting one universal payment date from a status page. The GSTN guidance cited here does not set out one statutory processing deadline for all refund categories.
GST Portal vs. PFMS: which status answers your question?
| What you need to know | Where to check | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Refund application processing stage | GST Portal | Search by ARN or filing year; current stage; whether the next step is pending with the officer or taxpayer. |
| Bank-account validation or payment disbursal | PFMS | Validation and disbursal status. |
The distinction is practical: one channel tracks the application’s processing, while the other checks the payment plumbing. Both can matter when you are trying to understand why a refund has not reached your bank account.
Use the GST Portal when your question is about the refund application itself: whether it has reached a stage, and whether the next step is assigned to the officer or taxpayer. Use PFMS when your question is about the bank account or the actual disbursal. If the issue is unclear, check the portal record first, read any case-specific communication, and then check PFMS if payment is the remaining concern.
These channels are complementary, not competing alternatives. The portal does not replace the PFMS payment check, and PFMS is not the application-stage tracker described by GSTN. Checking both in the right order can help you locate the unresolved part without drawing a conclusion from a single status.
Can you withdraw a GST refund application to fix an error?
GSTN’s February 2021 functionality compilation describes the RFD-01W withdrawal feature. It says an application may be withdrawn until the refund processing officer issues either an acknowledgement in RFD-02 or a deficiency memo in RFD-03. See the GSTN February 2021 functionality compilation.

That cutoff is not a recommendation to withdraw every application containing a mistake. First confirm the application’s current stage and read the applicable instructions for the case. The functionality note establishes when withdrawal is available, but does not establish that withdrawal is the right remedy for every filing error.
The practical implication is that the point in the process matters. If you are considering withdrawal, check whether the officer has already issued the RFD-02 acknowledgement or RFD-03 deficiency memo, because GSTN’s note identifies either event as the end of the stated withdrawal window. Do not infer that RFD-01W is available at every stage or that withdrawing and refiling will necessarily fix the issue. The note describes the feature and cutoff, not a universal remedy or a set of instructions for correcting every kind of error.
If the application has a notice or deficiency memo, read it before deciding whether withdrawal is relevant. If no such document is apparent, still verify the live case stage and current portal instructions. The safest course supported by the cited guidance is to act on the actual record, not on a general assumption that a filed claim should be withdrawn whenever something looks wrong.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dates, deadlines, and what the available guidance establishes
The tracking advisory is identified as a 2025 GSTN publication; the pre-login route and withdrawal feature are documented in GSTN functionality notes from 2021. Portal screens and menu labels can change, so rely on the live portal for the current interface. The guidance cited here does not state a statutory processing deadline that applies across all refund categories. Do not infer a promised payment date from the tracking stage alone.
This distinction matters when deciding whether a claim is actually late. A status check can show the case’s current stage, and PFMS can show the payment-related validation or disbursal status. Neither should be treated as a deadline calculator. Refund categories may have different applicable rules, and the GSTN tracking and functionality notes cited above do not establish one date that can be applied to every claim. If you need to know the deadline for a particular category, consult the applicable official guidance for that category rather than relying on a general estimate.
The materials also do not offer a named statistic, a quoted official’s prediction, or a universal list of reasons for delay. Therefore, this guide focuses on the steps the cited GSTN sources establish: locate the case, identify its stage, review its communications, and check PFMS for bank validation and disbursal where payment is the concern.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I check my GST refund status with an ARN?
On the GST Portal, sign in and go to Services > Refunds > Track Application Status. Enter the ARN or select the filing year and search. GSTN also describes a pre-login route through Services > Track Application Status: choose Refund and enter the ARN. The page shows the application stage.
Can I track a GST refund without logging in?
GSTN’s January–March 2021 functionality note describes pre-login tracking. Open Services > Track Application Status, choose Refund, and enter the ARN. Portal labels can change, so follow the current menu prompts if they differ.
Why does the GST Portal show progress but I have not received the refund?
The GST Portal tracks the application’s processing stage; it does not by itself establish that payment has been disbursed. Check PFMS for bank-account validation and disbursal status. GSTN says PFMS must validate the account in RFD-01 before the officer can issue a payment order and validate the account in RFD-05 before final disbursal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhere can I check GST refund payment status?
Use PFMS for the bank-validation and disbursal checks described by GSTN. Use the GST Portal to track the application stage. These are separate checks, and both may be needed to understand a pending refund.
What should I do if my GST refund is pending?
Find the application by ARN or filing year on the GST Portal, note the current stage and whether the next action is pending with the officer or taxpayer, and read any notice, deficiency memo or case-specific instruction. If processing has advanced but payment has not arrived, check PFMS. The cited guidance does not establish one cause or timeline for every pending claim.
Can I withdraw a refund application to correct a mistake?
GSTN’s February 2021 functionality note describes withdrawal through RFD-01W until the officer issues an RFD-02 acknowledgement or an RFD-03 deficiency memo. The note does not say withdrawal is the right remedy for every mistake. Verify the live case stage and follow the instructions that apply to your application.
How long does a GST refund take?
The GSTN tracking and functionality guidance cited here does not establish one processing deadline for every refund category. The portal can show the current application stage, and PFMS can show payment-related validation or disbursal status, but neither status alone supplies a universal payment date.
The Bottom Line
Track the application stage on the GST Portal with the ARN or filing year, and use PFMS to check bank validation and disbursal. Read the case-specific notices and instructions before acting; do not assume a generic pending label, duplicate filing or withdrawal will solve the issue. GSTN’s 2025 tracking advisory and 2021 functionality notes describe these checks but do not establish one timeline or remedy for every refund category.
