How to Tell a Crypto Wallet Transfer From an Exchange Deposit

A blockchain transfer is not labeled as a wallet transfer or exchange deposit. Check the receiving instructions, asset, network, memo or tag, and exchange credit status.

Check where you got the destination details and what the receiving service says it will do. A crypto transfer to a self-custody wallet goes to an address controlled by that wallet’s owner. An exchange deposit is an incoming transfer intended for an exchange account; the exchange must separately recognize and credit it to the customer’s internal balance. The blockchain does not label a transaction as a “wallet transfer” or an “exchange deposit.”

What distinguishes a wallet transfer from an exchange deposit?

The difference is the destination and how it is managed—not a special transaction type on the blockchain. OKX defines a deposit as “transferring crypto from another exchange or platform to your OKX account” (OKX Help Center). The blockchain records a transfer between addresses; an exchange then applies its own deposit rules and credits the relevant customer account.

With a self-custody wallet, the owner controls the keys for the wallet. With an exchange account, the exchange operates or manages the receiving wallet infrastructure and associates eligible incoming funds with a customer’s internal balance. A transaction can therefore be confirmed on-chain without appearing in the exchange account yet.

How to identify where your crypto was sent

  1. Find the original receiving instructions. If you selected an asset and network on an exchange’s deposit page and copied its address, you were preparing an exchange deposit. If you used a wallet’s receive screen, the address was provided for that wallet setup. An address alone does not reliably establish who controls it, so check the account or wallet records and the instructions you followed. See the guidance from Kraken, OKX, Binance.US, and Exodus.
  2. Match the asset and network independently. Compare both with the receiving platform’s current deposit instructions. The same token may be available on multiple networks, and a platform may accept only particular asset-and-network combinations. Sending an unsupported asset or using an unsupported network can make recovery difficult or unavailable. Current instructions from Kraken, OKX, and Binance.US are specific to those services.
  3. Check whether a memo or destination tag was required. Some exchanges use one on-chain address for multiple customers and rely on an additional tag or memo to route a deposit to the right account. Requirements vary by asset and platform. Coinbase’s help page lists examples such as XRP, XLM, ATOM, and HBAR for Coinbase deposits; that list is not a universal rule. Check the receiving platform’s current instructions, including Coinbase’s explanation, Kraken’s deposit guidance, or Exodus’s memo and tag guidance.
  4. Use the transaction record to check on-chain status. Find the transaction ID (TxID) in the sending wallet or platform and look it up in the explorer for the network used. Confirmations show the transaction’s blockchain status; they do not show whether an exchange has completed its separate account-crediting step.

Wallet transfer vs. exchange deposit at a glance

Check Self-custody wallet transfer Exchange deposit
Who manages the destination? The wallet owner controls the wallet’s keys. The exchange manages the receiving infrastructure and associates eligible deposits with a customer account.
Where did the address come from? The wallet’s receive screen or wallet records. The receiving exchange’s deposit page for the selected asset and network.
Could a memo or tag be needed? Often not for a unique self-custody receiving address, but check the wallet and network instructions. Sometimes; requirements depend on the asset and exchange. A required tag or memo helps identify the customer account.
What do confirmations establish? That the transaction has progressed on the blockchain; check the relevant explorer. That the transaction has progressed on the blockchain, not that the exchange has credited the balance.
Is there an exchange crediting step? No exchange account credit is involved unless the wallet or service is custodial. Yes. The exchange applies its deposit processing rules before the funds appear in the customer balance.

Why a confirmed transfer may not appear as a deposit

Confirmation and account credit are different checkpoints. Kraken says, “After sending the crypto, your deposit will appear in your Kraken account once the required confirmations are completed on the blockchain.” The number of confirmations and any additional processing depend on the platform, asset, network, and applicable account or deposit checks; there is no single confirmation count or processing time that applies to every exchange.

If an explorer shows confirmations but your exchange balance has not changed, compare the transfer with the exchange’s deposit record and current instructions. A mismatch, missing routing detail, deposit minimum, or additional platform processing can affect whether and when funds are credited. An on-chain success does not itself establish that an exchange will credit or recover a deposit.

What to do if the exchange has not credited the deposit

  1. Open the receiving exchange’s deposit history. Check whether the deposit is pending, credited, or flagged, and compare the listed asset, network, destination address, and any memo or tag with the transaction you sent.
  2. Verify the blockchain transaction. Use the TxID with the explorer for the network actually used. Make sure the transaction went to the intended address and review its confirmation status.
  3. Check the exchange’s current rules. Review the required asset/network combination, memo or tag, any minimum-deposit condition, and the platform’s stated processing guidance. Do not assume a rule for one exchange or asset applies to another.
  4. Contact the receiving platform through its official support flow. Provide the TxID and the requested transaction details. Never share a private key or recovery phrase. Recovery is not guaranteed, particularly for unsupported assets or networks.

When a small test transfer helps

For a new destination address or an unfamiliar network or tag requirement, a small test transfer can help you check that the receiving details work before sending a larger amount. Confirm the minimum deposit and any fees first, and wait for the test to be processed as intended. A test cannot make an unsupported asset or network recoverable, and it does not replace checking the destination address, asset, network, and required tag or memo against current instructions. See Coinbase, Exodus, and Binance.US for platform-specific guidance.
