A comment saying “sold,” a screenshot, or a payment notification forwarded by the buyer is not proof that you have been paid.
Keep the three checkpoints separate
Live selling becomes risky when a seller treats a public claim, an order, and a completed payment as the same event. They are different checkpoints:

Do not fulfill until the third checkpoint is complete. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies fake payment notifications as a common seller scam. A buyer’s screenshot, forwarded email, text alert, or claimed account balance can be forged or misleading.

Tell viewers exactly how a claim becomes a paid order before showing the first product. Use one route for the sale, rather than improvising a new payment method in a private message.

Shopify documentation describes live and shoppable-video options for channels including TikTok Shop, YouTube Shopping, and Facebook or Instagram live. Availability and checkout behavior can change. Its Meta checkout documentation describes a setup in which native checkout is available only to U.S.-based stores, while stores outside supported markets may use a shop that checks out on another website or checkout through messaging. Treat those as documented setup conditions, not a universal rule. Check the current eligibility screen and terms for your account and market before announcing “buy in app.”
Prepare the sale and your records
Build a product list that removes ambiguity
- Give every product a short, unique identifier such as A12 or “blue-mug-02.”
- Write the price, available quantity, and every variation, such as size, color, bundle, or condition.
- Set the shipping charge, tax treatment where applicable, and the resulting total for each common combination.
- Keep the live list synchronized with your store or a controlled order sheet so a product cannot be promised twice.
This is process advice rather than a prescribed FTC format. Its purpose is to make the documented order requirement workable when comments move quickly.
Publish the claim rule
State whether the first valid claim wins, whether a buyer must provide a variation in the same comment, and how waitlists work. Display the rule in a pinned comment and repeat it aloud. If two people claim the same item, apply the announced rule rather than negotiating privately after the fact.

Tell buyers what you will never request
Say that you will send payment instructions only through the established store, invoice, or platform flow. You will not ask for a phone verification code, request a separate transfer to “release” an order, accept a check for more than the total and return the difference, or redirect part of a card payment to a driver, shipper, or other vendor. These warnings address scam patterns identified by the FTC and payment processors.
Assign a logkeeper for busy streams
A second person can record claims while you demonstrate products. Give that person the product list, the claim rule, and access only to the order tools they need. Keep payment credentials and one-time codes out of public comments and shared chat.

Capture each claim during the live
- Repeat the identifier and price. When showing an item, put its identifier, variation choices, price, and available quantity on screen or in a pinned comment.
- Record the claim. Note the buyer’s platform account or name, item identifier, variation, quantity, timestamp or claim order, and whether the claim is accepted or wait-listed.
- Confirm the next step publicly but not the buyer’s private data. For example, tell the accepted claimant that an invoice or official checkout link will be sent. Do not ask for card numbers, bank credentials, passwords, or verification codes in the comments.
- Create or update the order. Enter the accepted items and customer details in your commerce system or controlled order sheet. Do not regard the comment itself as a complete order.
If a buyer changes a color, quantity, or shipping address in a message, update the order record and send a new written total. The amount the buyer saw on screen is not necessarily the final amount after variations and shipping.
Turn a claim into a written order and checkout
A written confirmation prevents disputes over what “sold” meant. Include the order or invoice number, item and variation, quantity, item price, shipping, taxes if applicable, total, payment deadline if you use one, shipping address or the step for collecting it, and your stated return or cancellation terms.
Using a draft-order and invoice workflow
Shopify’s documented draft-order flow illustrates the sequence: a merchant can enter products and customer details, save the draft for later changes, and email an invoice containing a checkout link. The same principles apply to another commerce system, although labels and capabilities differ.
- Open the commerce admin from your saved app or typed, known website—not a link supplied by a buyer.
- Create a draft order and add the exact product identifier, variation, quantity, price, shipping, and customer details.
- Review the total against the live-sale log. Correct duplicate claims or out-of-stock items before sending anything.
- Save the draft and generate the system’s invoice or checkout link.
- Send the link through the customer-contact method you announced. Tell the buyer to check the item, total, shipping, and domain before paying.
- Leave the order pending until the commerce account shows the payment status that your provider treats as paid or captured.
Do not accept a different payment method simply because a buyer says the invoice will not open. Direct the buyer to your known support channel and resolve the technical problem there.
How to know a buyer really paid
- Open the account independently. Use the known payment or commerce app, a bookmark you created, or an address you type yourself. Do not use a button in an unexpected email, text, or direct message.
- Find the transaction or order. Search by the order ID, buyer information, or the provider’s transaction reference. Check that the status is actually paid, captured, or otherwise available for fulfillment—not merely pending, failed, canceled, or under review.
- Match the details. Confirm the order ID, buyer, item and variation, quantity, total, and any shipping information. A real payment attached to the wrong order is not a reason to ship the wrong product.
- Record the status in the normal system. Update the order and retain the confirmation and tracking information there. Do not copy full card numbers, security codes, or other cardholder data into notes.
The FTC warns that a check can appear to be available in a bank account before the bank discovers it is counterfeit, sometimes weeks later. A displayed balance is therefore not equivalent to a cleared, matched payment. The FTC’s consumer advice on selling items online states: “Don’t accept a mobile payment from someone you don’t know.” For a live sale, use your established checkout or invoice process rather than an ad hoc mobile transfer from an unknown buyer.

Fulfill only after the match is complete
Once the order and payment agree, pack the exact item and variation, use the shipping address held in the order system, and add tracking according to your published shipping policy. Keep the order, payment reference, customer communication, and shipment record together so you can answer a dispute without relying on a comment thread.

Never write down or retain full card data on paper, online, or in an application. Square’s seller fraud guidance specifically warns against storing cardholder data. Use the processor’s tokenized customer and transaction records instead.
When a processor places an order under review
Pause fulfillment. Contact support through the processor’s known account channel and provide the order or transaction reference. Square explicitly tells sellers not to ship an order under investigation until its review is complete. Other providers may use different statuses, instructions, or timelines, so follow the provider’s current notice rather than assuming that a pending payment will clear soon.
Common live-sale scams and the correct response

FTC small-business guidance also advises against clicking links in unexpected messages. A legitimate buyer can complete the order through the route you announced; urgency is not a reason to bypass it.
What to do when something goes wrong
The buyer claims an item you cannot find
Search the live-sale log and your order system by account, identifier, and timestamp. If there is no accepted claim, explain that a public comment did not create a confirmed order and provide the official route if inventory remains. Do not create an order from a screenshot of a comment alone.

The buyer says payment is complete but your account shows nothing
Ask the buyer to use the original invoice or checkout link and wait for the status to appear in your account. Do not ship, refund, or accept a substitute transfer while the record is absent. If the buyer used a link you did not issue, treat it as unverified and contact the provider through its known channel.
The product sold out between two claims
Apply the rule announced before the live. Mark the later claimant wait-listed or offer another variation, then amend or cancel the draft order before payment. Never keep a payment for an unavailable product merely because the buyer paid quickly; use the provider’s documented cancellation or refund process.
You sent the wrong total
Stop before fulfillment. Correct the order, void or replace the invoice as the system permits, and send one new official link. Do not ask the buyer to pay a difference to a personal account or to a third party.
You suspect account compromise
Stop sending payment links, sign out of other sessions, change the account password from the known provider site, enable the provider’s security controls, and contact official support. Do not disclose a one-time code to someone claiming to be support in a social-media message.
Compare purchase methods on the protections that matter
Price alone does not tell you whether a live-sale route is workable. Before choosing a method, compare these questions:

- Eligibility: Is your account, country, product category, and sales channel approved today?
- Payment location: Does checkout occur in the platform, on your own store, or through an invoice link?
- Order durability: Does the route create an order or invoice that can be searched and reconciled?
- Verification: Can you see a provider-controlled status before shipping?
- Customer handling: Where are the buyer’s contact details, shipping address, returns, and support history stored?
- Fees and disputes: What do the current provider terms say about transaction fees, refunds, chargebacks, holds, and evidence?
Current fees and dispute protections are not established uniformly across providers. Read the terms for the specific account and country rather than assuming that an invoice link eliminates liability or guarantees protection from chargebacks.
U.S. marketplace disclosure note
The INFORM Consumers Act is narrower than a general social-selling rule. FTC guidance says qualifying high-volume third-party sellers with at least $20,000 in annual gross revenue on a particular online marketplace can be subject to marketplace disclosure requirements, including identity and contact information in listings or order confirmations. The marketplace has 10 days to collect specified information after a person meets the high-volume-seller definition, according to the FTC’s 2023 guidance.
Those figures concern qualifying sellers on a particular online marketplace. They are not a universal threshold or deadline for every social-media live sale, a seller’s payment deadline, or a rule that automatically applies to an off-platform store. Check the current federal, state, platform, tax, privacy, return, and product-specific requirements that apply to your business.
