How to Switch Banks: A Step-by-Step Guide

A safe bank switch starts with opening the new checking account, then carefully moving deposits and payments before closing the old one.

To switch checking accounts safely, open the new account first, redirect deposits and payments one by one, keep enough money in the old account for anything still pending, and close it only after activity has moved. This guide follows U.S. consumer guidance; timing, documentation, and account rules vary by institution.

1. Choose an account that fits your needs

Compare the ongoing costs and practical access of the new checking account before applying. The CFPB and FDIC recommend weighing fees and convenience rather than choosing on a short-term promotion alone. You can also ask your current bank whether it can address the fees or service issues prompting the move.

  • Monthly fees and the exact conditions for waiving them.
  • Minimum opening deposit and ongoing balance requirements.
  • Access to branches and ATMs where you live, work, or travel.
  • Online and mobile banking features, including bill pay and transfers.
  • Customer service options and any identification or other application requirements.

See the CFPB’s checking-account move guide and the FDIC’s guide to moving banks for additional considerations.

2. Open the new account before changing anything

Get the new account open and confirm that you can use it before redirecting deposits or payments. Obtain its routing and account numbers through the institution’s secure channels, and make sure you know how to access the account and monitor transactions.

Savor Folio Important Document Organizer, Acid-Free File Folder, Blue
  • Keep important documents safe: A document organizer designed to protect papers from getting lost. Store birth certificates, social security cards, wills, tax forms, insurance policies, titles & more in one secure place.
  • Easy to organize and find: Folders with pockets and a table of contents help track where documents live, while 33 hand-illustrated labels show what to save. Acid-free materials protect your papers for years to come.
  • Fits documents of various sizes: This document binder includes 3 vertical and 3 horizontal envelopes for 8.5 x 11 inch papers, plus 4 half-size envelopes for smaller keepsakes and important details.
  • Practical and easy to use: An important document folder organizer with a front pouch that provides a quick landing space for papers before filing, making it easy to stay organized as documents come in.
  • Premium quality, timeless style: Made with custom-dyed cloth, reinforced edges, and acid-free paper for long-term durability. An elegant file organizer designed to beautifully complement your office or living room décor.

3. Make a complete list of money coming in and going out

Review recent statements and account history, including pending and scheduled activity. Capture recurring transactions as well as items that do not happen every month.

  • Incoming deposits: wages, government benefits, and other recurring payments.
  • Outgoing payments: utilities, credit cards, insurance, subscriptions, and other bills.
  • Transfers between checking and savings accounts.
  • Payments scheduled through the old bank’s online bill-pay service.
  • Checks that have been written but have not cleared, plus pending debit-card transactions and scheduled withdrawals.

Identify who initiates each outgoing payment. A company-authorized automatic debit lets a company withdraw money from your account; recurring bank bill pay tells your bank or credit union to send money. They are separate arrangements, so changing one does not necessarily change the other. The CFPB explains how automatic bank-account payments work.

4. Redirect deposits and confirm when the change takes effect

Give your employer or other payer the new account details and ask when the update will begin. Do not assume a change takes effect immediately: the FDIC says switching direct deposit may take several weeks. Check the old account during the transition and verify that the first expected deposit arrives in the new one before relying on it to fund bills.

5. Move outgoing payments with enough lead time

Update each company-authorized debit with the company that withdraws the payment. For payments created in the old bank’s bill-pay service, cancel the old instruction and set up a replacement through the new bank or another payment method as appropriate. Check the payee, amount, and due date for each instruction.

  • Keep Important Family Records Together:Keep birth certificates, passports, insurance paperwork, medical records, tax documents, legal papers and other essential family records in one organized place instead of spreading them across drawers, cabinets and separate folders.

  • Made for Important Life Events:Use this folder for important documents for estate planning, moving, emergency preparedness, insurance matters and other major life events, helping essential family information stay organized and easier to access when needed.

Set new payments to begin after you expect the new deposit to arrive, and allow time for changes to take effect. The FDIC cautions that payment changes can take a few days and should be made well before due dates. Monitor both accounts; if a bill is at risk of being late, contact the biller and use another payment method if available. Canceling an old bill-pay instruction is important to avoid sending the same payment twice.

6. Keep a transition balance in the old account

Leave enough money in the old account to cover checks that have not cleared, pending debits, scheduled withdrawals, and any minimum-balance requirement. There is no universal buffer amount: it depends on your own transactions. Continue checking the account until those items post. A withdrawal against insufficient funds can lead to overdraft or nonsufficient-funds fees, and the company taking payment may charge a fee as well.

7. Transfer the remaining money after the new account is working

Once deposits and payments are reaching and leaving the new account, and outstanding activity in the old account has cleared, move the remaining balance. The CFPB identifies an electronic transfer or cashier’s check as options. A personal check may cost less, but funds can take longer to become available. Availability depends on the method and the institutions involved, so check expected timing before moving money you may need soon.

8. Close the old account and keep proof

Special case: certificates of deposit

Moving a checking account does not move a certificate of deposit (CD) automatically. Review the CD’s maturity date and contract terms with the institution; withdrawing before maturity may have consequences under that account’s terms.

What can vary from bank to bank

This sequence is a practical process, not a guarantee of exact posting dates, account eligibility, required opening documents, transfer availability, fee waivers, or closure procedures. Confirm timing with each payer and check the current terms with both institutions.
