Submit a comment to the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) by email or postal mail. First check the specific proposal’s page for its reference number and deadline; then include the reference in your email subject line or at the beginning of a mailed comment. The PCAOB makes comments public and posts them on its website.

Check the proposal and its deadline

Start at the PCAOB’s Open for Public Comment page and locate the proposal or release you want to address. Record its docket number, or the Board release or staff consultation paper number and title. These details help the PCAOB associate your submission with the right matter.

Check the proposal-specific deadline rather than relying on a date from another matter or an older announcement. When checked for this article, the general PCAOB page reported no rulemakings or other Board releases open for public comment. Status can change, so verify the general page and the specific matter before sending a comment.

For example, the PCAOB’s July 20, 2026 announcement on draft strategic-plan goals requested comments by September 4, 2026, referencing PCAOB No. 2026-006. That deadline has passed; it is an example of a proposal-specific deadline, not a general comment period.

Choose how to submit your comment

Route How to submit Where the proposal reference goes
Email Use the email address linked on the PCAOB’s Open for Public Comment page. Put the comment in the message body or attach it as a Microsoft Word document or Adobe PDF. In the subject line.
Postal mail Send it to PCAOB Attention: Office of the Secretary, 1666 K Street NW, Washington, DC 20006-2803. In a reference line at the beginning of the comment.

The PCAOB’s instructions do not specify a required postal format or guarantee delivery timing.

Prepare the comment

The general submission instructions do not require a particular argument structure or template. Make the proposal you are addressing clear and explain your views in a readable way. Include the docket number, or the Board release or staff consultation paper number and title, in the location required for your chosen route.

Know what happens after submission

The PCAOB states: “All comments are made public and posted on the PCAOB website.” Do not include information you would not want published.

Social-media posts or discussion are not official comments. For organized submissions, multiple signatures may be included. If the PCAOB receives identical or near-identical comments, it posts one representative sample and a running total.

Use the docket to follow the matter

A docket page can help you confirm the matter’s status and see comments already submitted. For instance, the PCAOB’s Docket 057 comment-letter page is labeled “Adopted, Pending SEC Action” and lists letters. That status is specific to Docket 057; it does not mean comments are currently open on that matter. Always check the current notice for the proposal you intend to address.
