To store XRP, choose whether you want a provider to manage custody or to control the wallet’s secret keys yourself. Before sending real funds, you can practise the payment workflow on the XRP Ledger Testnet—but a testnet payment is not real XRP and does not confirm anything on Mainnet. To verify a payment, check its final result in a validated ledger; an initial submission response alone is not confirmation.
How do I store XRP in a wallet?
First decide who will control the keys. In a custodial wallet, a provider manages the keys or account arrangement; you rely on that provider for access and recovery and are limited to the transactions it supports. In a non-custodial wallet, you control the secret keys and recovery material. That gives you direct control, but losing the keys can mean losing access with no way to recover it. XRPL.org describes wallet choice as a matter of your needs and comfort with these trade-offs in its crypto wallet guide.
Hardware versus software is a separate choice from custodial versus non-custodial. A hardware wallet stores keys on a physical device; a software wallet stores them digitally on a connected device. Neither category is automatically risk-free: provider security and malicious software updates can pose risks. Before choosing a particular product, check its current manufacturer documentation for XRP support and the address formats and transaction features you need.
Protect the keys and recovery material
A secret key is control of the account. XRPL.org warns: “If others gain access to your secret keys, they have as much control over your accounts as you do, and can steal or destroy all your money.” Never share a seed or secret key with another person, a website, a support representative, or a remote service. Generate and handle it securely; if a computer generated a secret and transmitted it over a network, someone else may have been able to see it. See XRPL.org’s guidance on secure signing.

How do I send a test XRP transaction?
Use the XRP Ledger Testnet to practise the steps without risking a Mainnet payment. Testnet credentials and balances belong to that test network: keep them separate from Mainnet credentials, and do not reuse them on Mainnet. Testnet XRP has no real-world XRP value, and test networks can be reset, so balances may disappear. Follow the official Send XRP tutorial for its test-network flow and current instructions.
- Choose the test network. Select Testnet in the wallet or client and make sure it is connected to a test-network server, not Mainnet. Obtain test credentials through an official testnet flow.
- Choose a test recipient and amount. Use an address you control or a recipient that explicitly accepts testnet payments. Check the destination address and any required destination tag before sending.
- Submit the payment. Review the network, recipient, amount, tag, and fee shown by the wallet or client before signing. Do not treat the first response as proof that the payment completed.
- Check the final result. Use the wallet’s transaction details or look up the transaction and confirm its result after it has been recorded in a validated ledger.
This exercise checks whether you can follow a payment workflow on Testnet. A successful testnet payment does not mean a Mainnet payment was sent, and it is not a guarantee about how quickly a future payment will validate.

How do I verify an XRP transaction?
Look for the transaction’s final outcome in a validated ledger. The XRP Ledger send tutorial explains that a submission response is tentative: it can change depending on whether and how the transaction is included in a validated ledger. A response that looks successful at submission—including a tesSUCCESS-like result—is not by itself final confirmation.
- Confirm you are checking the transaction on the same network where you sent it: Testnet or Mainnet.
- Check the transaction’s recorded result after validation, rather than relying only on the wallet’s immediate submission message.
- For a test, treat a validated Testnet result as confirmation only of that test-network transaction.
What should I check before sending real XRP?
Recipient address and destination tag
Copy the recipient address from the receiving service’s instructions and verify it before signing. A hosted exchange or service may require a destination tag to route a payment to the right customer balance. A tag is routing information, not proof of identity; the service’s deposit screen is the authority on which address and tag to use.

An X-address can encode a destination tag. If your wallet has parsed a tag from an X-address, do not add a duplicate separate tag. Follow the recipient’s exact instructions, including whether it expects an X-address or a classic address and separate tag. XRPL.org explains destination-tag behavior and the relevant address formats.
Fee and available balance
XRPL.org documents a standard minimum transaction cost of 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) on the page checked in 2026. Network load can raise the cost, so check the fee immediately before signing. The fee is destroyed by the network; it is not paid to the recipient or a validator. See the documentation on transaction cost.

Your spendable balance may also be affected by account reserve requirements, which can change with protocol amendments. The Send XRP tutorial identifies available balance after reserves as one possible reason a payment may fail; check the current requirements rather than relying on an old reserve figure.

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Confirm the source and destination addresses and any required fields, including a destination tag when the recipient requires one.
- Check that the wallet is connected to the intended network and that the transaction is being checked on that same network.
- Check that the available balance covers the payment, fee, and any applicable reserve requirements.
- Read the transaction result code and follow the error it reports rather than repeatedly resubmitting without checking the details.
