To evaluate a cannabis company’s cash flow and debt, read its latest annual and quarterly filings together. Follow cash from operations across several periods, account for taxes and investment, then compare the cash available with interest, principal repayments, and other near-term needs. Pay particular attention to tax disclosures, including the company’s treatment of Section 280E. A single positive quarter or a large cash balance is not enough to show that a company can fund itself reliably.
Start with comparable periods and the right reporting scope
Before comparing figures, note the company’s fiscal year-end, reporting currency, consolidation scope, and whether each filing is annual or interim. Compare the same fiscal periods and accounting scope; calendar-year assumptions can lead to mismatched comparisons. For example, Canopy Growth’s 2026 annual report presents fiscal years ended March 31, 2026, 2025, and 2024. Canopy Growth’s annual filings illustrate why the fiscal-year end matters.
Use the latest annual report for a broad view of trends and debt terms, then read subsequent quarterly or interim reports for changes in cash, obligations, tax positions, and management’s outlook. Company balances and terms can change between reporting dates.
Is the company generating cash from operations?
Start with the cash flow statement, not net income or adjusted EBITDA. Operating cash flow measures cash generated or used by operating activities; accounting earnings and adjusted EBITDA are different measures and do not, by themselves, show whether cash is available to pay bills.

Trace operating cash flow over multiple years or quarters. Then inspect changes in receivables, inventory, payables, accrued expenses, and taxes. A temporary improvement can result from timing—for example, collecting receivables or delaying payments—rather than a durable improvement in the business.
Ayr Wellness Holdings, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K provides an issuer-specific illustration: the company reported positive net cash flows from operating activities in 2023, 2024, and 2025 despite recurring accounting losses. It also reported $85.676 million in cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2025. These are Ayr’s reported figures, not sector benchmarks. Ayr Wellness Holdings, Inc. filings
How much cash remains after investment, taxes, and debt service?
Operating cash flow is not the same as cash freely available for debt repayment or expansion. Build a simple bridge from operating cash flow to cash available:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Start with cash from operating activities for the period.
- Subtract capital expenditures, distinguishing maintenance or sustaining investment from growth projects where the filing allows.
- Account for cash taxes and cash interest if they are not already reflected in the operating cash flow measure being used.
- Compare what remains with scheduled principal repayments and other required cash outlays.
This is an analytical framework, not a universal accounting definition. Companies may define “free cash flow” differently, and a non-GAAP measure may use a different formula. Check the company’s definition and reconciliation before comparing it with another issuer’s figure. A company can report positive operating cash flow yet still need outside funding if investment, taxes, interest, and principal exceed cash generated.
How does Section 280E affect cash flow?
Tax disclosures deserve special attention because they can materially affect cash available to meet obligations. Issuer filings describe Section 280E of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code as limiting deductions for businesses treated as trafficking in controlled substances. As a result, a cannabis company may face substantial current tax expense even when its book income is modest or negative.
Read the tax note and related risk disclosures for cash taxes paid, accrued income taxes, uncertain tax positions, amended returns, examinations, and management’s stated legal interpretation. Distinguish taxes paid during the period from tax expense recorded in the accounts: they can differ in timing and amount. Legal disputes or uncertain positions may create cash demands that are difficult to predict. One company’s interpretation or exposure does not establish another company’s treatment.

Measure liquidity against near-term needs
Compare unrestricted cash and working capital with current liabilities, expected operating needs, required investment, and obligations due over the next 12 months. Working capital is current assets minus current liabilities, but the total alone can obscure whether assets such as inventory can be converted into cash promptly or whether receivables are collectible on schedule.
Management’s statement that available funds are adequate is an outlook based on assumptions, not a guarantee. Test it against recent operating cash flow, upcoming maturities, required spending, access to financing, and the company’s sensitivity to weaker sales or delayed collections. Ayr’s 2025 filing, for example, reported cash and working capital and stated management believed cash plus anticipated operating cash flow could support the following 12 months; those disclosures describe Ayr’s position and assumptions, not a general standard.
How much debt does the company have, and when is it due?
Use the balance sheet and debt notes to build a schedule of material obligations. Total principal is only the starting point: the terms determine when and how much cash the company must pay, what assets are at risk, and whether refinancing may be needed.
Rank #4
| Debt detail | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Principal and maturity | Outstanding principal, maturity date, and scheduled amortization | Shows the size and timing of required repayments and any concentration of maturities. |
| Interest | Coupon or effective rate; fixed or variable rate; cash interest due | Indicates recurring cash cost and exposure to rate changes. |
| Security and guarantees | Collateral, liens, and guarantees | Shows which assets or entities support the debt and what may be exposed if the company defaults. |
| Other provisions | Conversion features and call or put provisions | May affect repayment timing, dilution, or the company’s ability to refinance or retire debt. |
| Covenants | Tests based on liquidity, EBITDA, fixed-charge coverage, or other definitions; disclosed headroom, compliance, waivers, or breaches | A covenant problem can restrict the company or trigger consequences before a scheduled maturity. |
Read the agreement terms and the issuer’s explanation of any covenant definitions rather than assuming that a company’s adjusted EBITDA matches the measure used in a loan test. Filings may also flag significant cash needed for debt service and describe liquidity or adjusted-EBITDA covenants. Ayr Wellness Holdings, Inc.’s 2022 Form 10-K is an example of debt and covenant disclosures, not evidence of current terms.
Separate business cash generation from new financing
A rising cash balance does not necessarily mean operations are generating cash. In the cash flow statement, distinguish operating, investing, and financing flows, and identify whether cash came from operations, asset sales, new borrowing, or share issuance. Borrowing adds repayment and interest obligations; issuing shares can dilute existing shareholders. Trulieve’s interim filing describes cash, operating activity, and debt or equity offerings among its liquidity sources, illustrating why the source of cash matters. Trulieve’s interim filing

Use disclosed sensitivities and maturity tables where available, then consider whether the company could meet obligations under less favorable conditions. The exercise is not a forecast; it tests how dependent the apparent liquidity cushion is on favorable assumptions.

- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
- Sales decline or gross margins compress.
- Customers pay later, or inventory takes longer to sell or becomes less saleable.
- Tax payments accelerate or an uncertain tax position requires cash.
- Refinancing is unavailable or comes at a higher cost.
- A covenant is breached, waived on conditions, or leaves little headroom.
Compare the resulting pressures with unrestricted cash, working capital, operating cash flow trends, and the timing of debt payments. If liquidity depends on a new loan or share issuance, treat that dependence as a separate risk rather than counting it as cash already generated by the business.
Compare cannabis companies on like terms
For a useful comparison, align fiscal periods, currencies, and accounting scope. Compare trends and definitions, not just headline balances.
- Operating cash flow trend and volatility.
- Cash, working capital, and near-term operating needs.
- Cash taxes and unresolved tax positions.
- Capital expenditures and cash remaining after investment.
- Debt principal, interest burden, maturities, and refinancing concentration.
- Secured versus unsecured obligations and covenant headroom or compliance.
- Dependence on borrowing or equity issuance to fund operations and obligations.
Read each issuer’s definition and reconciliation of adjusted EBITDA or free cash flow before using either measure comparatively. A figure with the same label may not be calculated the same way across companies.
