Storing cryptocurrency securely is a custody decision: leave it with a centralized exchange, or use a self-custody wallet and protect the keys yourself. An exchange may be more convenient, but you depend on the company’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. With self-custody, you control the keys—but you are responsible for keeping them safe and having a working recovery plan.
Exchange account or self-custody wallet?
A centralized exchange holds the cryptocurrency on your behalf and controls the keys. A wallet, by contrast, is a tool for interacting with crypto accounts and assets; a self-custody wallet lets you control the keys. Some wallet software does not take custody of your funds. The distinction matters most when something goes wrong: an exchange may control account recovery and withdrawals, while a self-custody wallet generally cannot reset your keys for you.
| Consideration | Centralized exchange | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls access? | The exchange controls custody and account access. | You control the private keys or recovery phrase. |
| Primary exposure | You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies; access could be frozen. | You must protect the keys and prevent others from obtaining them. |
| Account recovery | Handled under the exchange’s own account-recovery process. | No provider can reset the keys; recovery depends on your wallet’s recovery method and backup. |
| Backup responsibility | Protect your login and use the provider’s recovery and security controls. | Back up the recovery information and confirm it can restore the wallet. |
| Convenience | Often simpler for account access and exchange activity, but withdrawals are subject to provider policies. | Offers direct control, but you are responsible for secure setup, transaction checks, and recovery. |
Neither approach is universally safest. Bitcoin.org cautions that when a third party controls the keys, users rely on its security and honesty, and that exchanges can be hacked, fail, or freeze access to funds (Bitcoin.org). Self-custody removes that particular dependence but makes key loss or theft your responsibility.
Securing a cryptocurrency exchange account
If you keep crypto with a centralized exchange, protect the account that controls access to it. Bitcoin.org advises custodial-service users to choose a service carefully and enable strong multifactor authentication when available. Exact controls and account-recovery rules vary by provider, so consult the exchange’s current official security guidance rather than assuming every service offers the same protections.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Use a strong, unique password. A password manager can help generate and manage one.
- Enable the strongest multifactor authentication the exchange supports.
- Use only the exchange’s official website and support channels. Do not follow unsolicited links or give account secrets to someone claiming to be support.
- Read the provider’s withdrawal and account-recovery rules so you understand what happens if access is lost or a withdrawal is delayed.
These steps can improve account security, but they cannot eliminate counterparty risk: the company still controls custody, and its policies determine account access and withdrawals.
Choosing and using a self-custody wallet
In self-custody, a private key authorizes control of associated assets. A recovery phrase is a sequence of words that can restore a wallet, depending on how that wallet is designed. Ethereum.org calls the recovery phrase “the master key to your wallet” (ethereum.org). Treat it as a secret that grants authority—not as an ordinary password to share with a help desk.

Software wallets and hardware wallets
A software wallet may be convenient for regular access, while a hardware wallet stores keys offline and can reduce exposure to online compromise. Bitcoin.org describes offline wallets as a strong option for savings and hardware wallets as a balance between security and ease of use (Bitcoin.org). Ethereum.org also describes hardware wallets as offline key storage (ethereum.org). These are options, not guarantees: a hardware device does not protect a recovery phrase that has been exposed, and users still need to follow trustworthy setup instructions.
Check asset and network compatibility
Before choosing a wallet or moving funds, verify that it supports the specific asset and network you use. Do not assume that a wallet supports every cryptocurrency or network. When sending, carefully verify the full receiving address and transaction details; cryptocurrency transactions may be irreversible.

Protecting and backing up a recovery phrase
Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase or private key may be able to access the associated assets. Never disclose either to someone claiming to be customer support, and do not grant remote access to a device at their request. Ethereum.org advises: “Don’t store it on a computer. Write it down and keep it safe.” (ethereum.org) A screenshot or cloud-synced note can expose the phrase through other devices or accounts.
- Use the backup method specified by your wallet, and confirm how that wallet is restored before relying on it.
- Make sure the backup is complete, legible, and durable. A physical backup plate is one possible offline medium, not a guarantee against theft, fire, or loss.
- Consider keeping secure copies in more than one physical location. Protect each location against unauthorized access and physical hazards.
- If a backup is exposed to a network, encrypt it. Do not upload an unencrypted recovery phrase or store it as plain text in a cloud account.
- Check whether your wallet requires recurring backups; backup requirements vary. Many modern deterministic wallets can be restored from a recovery phrase, but verify the behavior of your specific wallet.
Bitcoin.org recommends backing up the entire wallet, encrypting network-exposed backups, using more than one secure location, and checking whether regular backups are needed (Bitcoin.org). No single storage material or location is best for everyone: the backup must remain both protected from others and recoverable by you.

What happens if access is lost?
For self-custody, losing the recovery information can make the funds permanently inaccessible. Bitcoin.org warns that a permanently lost recovery phrase means the funds are gone permanently (Bitcoin.org); ethereum.org likewise explains that no one can reset a self-custody wallet password or restore access without the keys or phrase (ethereum.org). For an exchange account, contact the provider through its official support channel and follow its account-recovery process.
Scammers may impersonate support and ask for a recovery phrase, private key, or remote access. A legitimate support representative does not need your recovery phrase or private key to assist with an account issue. Never send those secrets, even if the request appears urgent or comes from a familiar-looking account.
