How to Store Bitcoin Securely: Exchange Custody vs. a Hardware Wallet

Exchange custody is easier to access but depends on a provider; a hardware wallet gives you key control and the responsibility to protect recovery information.

Leaving Bitcoin with an exchange is easier to access, but the exchange controls the keys and you depend on its security, solvency and withdrawal policies. A hardware wallet puts key control in your hands, but makes you responsible for protecting the recovery phrase, checking transactions and planning for device loss. Neither option removes risk; the practical choice depends on which responsibilities and dependencies you can manage.

What Bitcoin custody means

Bitcoin is recorded on the Bitcoin network; a wallet is software or a device that manages the credentials used to authorize transactions. The private key controls spending. A recovery phrase can restore wallet access if a device, key or software is lost or damaged. The SEC’s investor bulletin on crypto custody explains these basics.

Custody describes who controls access to the keys. It is separate from whether keys are stored online or offline: an exchange can use cold storage while retaining custody, and self-custody arrangements can use connected software.

How exchange custody works—and what you take on

When Bitcoin stays in an exchange account, the exchange or its custodian controls key access. You rely on the provider to safeguard assets and to honor withdrawals under its policies. That creates counterparty risk: a provider’s security incident, shutdown, bankruptcy or account restrictions can interfere with access. The SEC warns that a custodian being hacked, shutting down or going bankrupt may cause customers to lose access; Bitcoin.org’s overview also describes the dependence on a third party. This is a risk, not evidence that every exchange will fail.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Before relying on an exchange for custody, investigate the provider rather than assuming a familiar brand name or a “cold storage” claim settles the question. The SEC suggests questions such as:

  • What is the provider’s background and regulatory status, and what happens to customer assets if it fails?
  • What do any insurance terms actually cover?
  • How are keys stored and safeguarded, who can access them, and does the provider use subcontractors?
  • Does it lend or commingle customer assets, and what are its privacy practices?
  • What account, transaction and transfer fees apply, and under what conditions can withdrawals be delayed or restricted?

These are due-diligence questions, not assurances that a particular provider has a specific safeguard. In the United States, an older SEC investor alert says Bitcoin held in a digital wallet or on a Bitcoin exchange does not have protections similar to SIPC securities accounts or FDIC bank accounts. That statement is U.S.-specific and does not rule out every contractual protection; it should not be generalized to other jurisdictions.

How hardware-wallet self-custody works

A hardware wallet is a dedicated device that signs transactions using keys it controls. In the workflow described by the Bitcoin Developer Guide, network-connected software prepares a transaction and sends its details to the device. You review the transaction information on the device; the device signs it; then the connected software broadcasts the signed transaction.

This setup moves key control away from an exchange, but transfers operating and recovery duties to you. You need to set up the device correctly, keep recovery information safe, and review transaction details before approving a signature. The device does not eliminate the risks of a compromised recovery phrase, mistakes or an unusable backup.

Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guidance calls hardware wallets a balance between security and ease of use. That is guidance, not a measured guarantee about every product or setup. A dedicated signing device may offer more protection than a full-service wallet while being less cumbersome than fully offline signing, but it requires buying and carrying a device, as the developer guide notes.

How to back up a hardware wallet safely

A recovery phrase is a sensitive credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to access the associated funds. The SEC advises storing it securely and never sharing it. Treat it as a key, not as a password to send to support.

  • Write down or otherwise record the phrase using the wallet maker’s documented setup process. Never photograph it, upload it to cloud storage, or enter it into a website or app in response to an unsolicited support message.
  • Keep backups private and protected from theft, fire, water and other damage. Bitcoin.org cautions that online backups can be stolen and recommends considering multiple secure physical locations and durable storage media to avoid a single point of failure.
  • Follow the specific wallet’s recovery documentation. Backup requirements can vary; confirm that the backup restores the intended wallet configuration before relying on it.
  • Plan who could locate and use the recovery information if you are unavailable, without exposing it to people who should not have access.

Bitcoin.org also offers general guidance to keep only small amounts on a computer or mobile device for everyday spending and hold remaining funds in a safer environment. It is not a tailored allocation rule or a recommendation about how much Bitcoin any individual should keep in a particular wallet.

Exchange custody vs. hardware wallet: the practical trade-offs

Decision point Exchange custody Hardware-wallet self-custody
Key control The provider manages key access. You control the recovery material and authorize signatures.
Main dependency Provider security, solvency, policies and withdrawal access. Device integrity, correct operation and a safe recovery backup.
Convenience Account access and provider-supported workflows can be simpler. Requires device setup and signing steps; less convenient for frequent transactions.
Failure planning Check insolvency handling, insurance terms, asset use and withdrawal rules. Plan for device loss, damage, theft and recovery-phrase compromise.
Costs Check account, transaction and transfer fees. A device purchase and transaction or network fees may apply.

There is no universal safety ranking in these categories, and the cited sources do not establish a comparative loss rate for exchange custody versus hardware-wallet self-custody. Each option concentrates risk differently: exchange users depend on a provider, while self-custody users depend on their own device handling and recovery process.

What happens if you lose a hardware wallet?

Losing or damaging the device is not the same as losing the recovery phrase. If the recovery material remains private, intact and compatible with the wallet setup, it may let you restore access using a replacement device or supported wallet software. If the phrase is lost, access may be unrecoverable; if it is exposed, someone else may be able to spend the Bitcoin. Follow the wallet maker’s official recovery instructions, and never give the phrase to a support representative.

Is it safe to leave Bitcoin on an exchange?

It can be convenient, but it means relying on a third party’s security, solvency, policies and ability to process withdrawals. Whether that is an acceptable arrangement depends on your circumstances and your assessment of the provider; the available sources do not establish that one custody method has a quantified lower loss rate. A hardware wallet reduces reliance on an exchange for key control, but only works as intended if you can securely operate the device and maintain a usable, protected recovery backup.
